Aiyoo…very sad to read about this! Babies also suffer since infant formula is quite expensive. I went for grocery shopping last week (first time after price hike) and found many things are more expensive. Even toilet tissue and tissue paper increased about 25%!

The idea of ration card as proposed by MHS Penang is worth considering. Maybe some sort of smart card that can verify the owner and remove chance of forgery. In this way, those who are below poverty rate can be helped directly.

Pricey infant formula forces substitute feeding

BUTTERWORTH: Some poor parents are substituting pricey infant formula with diluted condensed milk, rock sugar water, black coffee and plain tea, to feed their infants and toddlers.

Malaysia Hindu Sangam (Penang) Social and Welfare Committee chairman P. Murugiah said parents with low income of under RM1,500 and with an average of three children, have reduced feeding infant formula from five times a day to only twice a day.

“They substitute the remaining feeding periods with other drinks,” he said.

He claimed that poor mothers could not produce breast milk as they were undernourished. “The price of infant formula has gone up by about 80% in the last two years, with one brand rising from RM9 to RM16.50 per 650gm,” Murugiah said.

He said the sangam and a few other non-governmental organisations have been giving milk powder aid to at least 30 families since last year.  “We believe there are more families who need such aid,” he said.

Murugiah urged the Government to help set up a scheme to make infant milk more affordable to such families.

He said the plight of these families would worsen if the Government removed essential grocery items from its price control list.”Basic items, such as rice, sugar and flour should be made affordable especially to this group of people.

“The Government should introduce a ration card system, such as is practised in India, to allow the lower income group to buy essential food items at reduced prices,” he said.

Kids without birth cert expelled from tamil schools

Well, i think the community should learn from illegal immigrants on how they go their PR and other documents. Interested parties who are concerned for the community can set up a fund to pay for such documents. I’m sure there are many syndicates who can help 🙂 Depending on the relevant agencies will take forever, so might as well look for alternative avenues. The foreigners are enjoying more benefit due to their “initiatives”. Why not learn from them?

Remember just before election, MIC Youth hijacked an independent group’s (Makkal Sakthi?) programme and went around the nation to register Indians without identity documents? Wonder what happened to those applications. Wait for next election campaign is it?

Since Pakatan had taken over Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah, all states with high number of Indians, perhaps they should re-initiate action to get people without proper identification documents registered. Even when MIC Youth held the program in Klang, many people from other races also turned up. So, this is a common problem among the poor and rural inhabitants.

Remember SJKT Ladang Bukit Jalil? It is the school that is being relocated to a cemetery area. It has the infamous publicity of being flooded 3 times in a month. Well, looks like its not on the KL Draft City Plan 2020 ! I don’t suppose the idea to temporarily house the school in ground floor of the flats has anything to do with its disappearance?

Chin, who paid RM150 for the two-volume draft plan, complained that there are mistakes in it. He pointed out that SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Jalil school and the detention camp are not included in the plan.

In a rare case, a lady who died at the age of 78, Selimah Mat, was buried as a Buddhist after the Perlis Syariah court ruled (based on Perlis Religious Affairs Dept) that the lady is not a Muslim at time of death. She was taken to Thailand at the age of 16, and came back 8 years later with a son. She admitted to marrying a Buddhist and living as one.  Her sister said that Selimah did not want to return to Islam.

The issue ran for 4 days, after the son applied to bury Selimah according to Buddhist rites.  Selimah was also seen actively participating in the local Wat.

I guess this is one of those lucky ones!

Both Star and NST carried the news.

I saw the interview on “Karathu Kaalam” (Saturday 6-7pm, TV2, 14 June), but only from halfway. Interestingly, the survey done via the show indicates that more than 86% of the voters want a MIC leader who can speak Tamil fluently as one of the criteria.

Samy was calm and jovial at times, throughout the interview, conducted by Paandithurai. He tried to captivate the audience with flowery Tamil, but looking at the comments from viewers scrolling on the TV, not so successful. Many of the comments looke like came from MIC members (as indicated on the messages).

Samy highlights th criteria to be the MIC’s numero uno:

  • must prove to have the party and the people’s interests at heart.
  • must earn the trust and respect of party members
  • must have displayed leadership qualities and people-oriented
  • must be near the people, communicate with them, know and resolve their problems and have the peoples interests in his or her heart

He reiterated his retirement date is in 2012, meaning another term as President is imminent. » Read more: Samy not revealing successor
