Perhaps His Excellency should inform the Russian Federal Space Agency to update their website as well. It still shows our Dr as flight participant.

Russian envoy confirms that Malaysian is not a ‘mere passenger’

source

By JANE RITIKOS

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Angkasawan is no passenger or tourist but a full-fledges cosmonaut, said Russian ambassador to Malaysia Alexander Karchava. “Russia does not see him as a mere passenger to the International Space Station (ISS). He is a researcher. The experiments he will carry out were discussed between Russia and Malaysia.  “We don’t consider him as a space tourist but a full-fledge cosmonaut,” he said in an interview at the Russian embassy here.

Recently, it was reported that Nasa had listed Malaysia’s two Angkasawans as space flight participants and not as astronauts for the ISS mission 16. This led to several reports here doubting the status of the Angkasawan.

Describing the cynics as possessing “logical myopia,” he said that during the medieval period, there were also critics who doubted the European quests to seek new territories, claiming it a waste of money.  “Yet in the end, it was those who went beyond the known worlds who reaped political and economic benefits. “Now we must seek new territories in space,” he said, adding that the Angkasawan had an important job to do, carrying out vital scientific experiments to benefit Malaysia and the world.

To those calling it the Govern-ment’s “waste of money,” Karchava explained that the Russian government would foot the bill to send the Malaysian cosmonaut to space, as an offset deal for Malaysia’s purchase of its Sukhoi fighter jets. He noted that even before the Oct 10 launch, Malaysia and Russia had already planned mutual projects, namely Malaysian scientists in-volved in the National Space Pro-gramme had been invited to propose experiments on Russian volunteers undergoing simulation exercises for the Mars exploration project. Past collaboration included Ma-laysia’s first satellite TiungSat launched by a Russian rocket, which had opened the door for the launch of RazakSat next year. In defence aviation, Malaysia had purchased Russia’s MiG29 fighter jets in 1994 and the Sukhoi jets in 2003.

“Your Angkasawan will create history for Malaysia and his achievement will be the national pride and install Malaysia as a member of the Space Club. “To appreciate this, you cannot confine yourself to your kampung. Malaysians have gone places and will go places, even to space,” said the diplomat who speaks fluent Bahasa Indonesia.

Karpal joins Samy Vellu in attacking Kavyeas

Kavyeas seems to stir up one controversy after another – from MPAJ, Stephen's Corner, Taiping seat, CTOS, MIC, MAIKA, Tamil School status, etc.

Is that sign of a caring, charismatic leader fighting for the public, or as Karpal Singh puts it, "Kayveas is steadily becoming an embarrassment…but the country as a whole"?

Kayveas unfazed, continues to take digs at Samy Vellu

source
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk M. Kayveas is unperturbed by what he terms as Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu's attempts to embarrass him.

Although the MIC president had released a letter which could be potentially damaging to Kayveas, the People's Progressive Party (PPP) president remained unfazed and said he was more concerned about the plight of the Indian community.

Kayveas's letter, dated April 12, 1985, was written to thank Samy Vellu for STG2,000 education loan for Kayveas who was studying in England at that time. “By publishing the letter, Samy thinks he is embarrassing me but the joke is on him as his act only shows how low he can go. By writing the letter, it shows my culture and tradition of thanking people who have helped me. “The contents of the letter were genuine and written in high respect and hope on the man  who has taken charge of the uplifting of the Indian community.

“But it is very clear that he did not live up to the letter.

“It is good that the letter was made public as it is clear that after 22 years, he has failed the Indian community. “The claims of STG2,000 became an answer to the questions raised regarding the bad state of the Indian community. “As far as I am concerned, questions raised regarding the present situation of the Indian community have yet to be answered and fulfilled,” Kayveas said yesterday.

MIC released the letter on Monday as proof that Kayveas had benefited from monetary assistance from the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) despite the PPP leader accusing MIC of lacking commitment in helping the Indian community. When contacted, Samy Vellu declined to comment further on the matter.

Amid the raging war of words between the two party leaders, Samy Vellu received a show of support from an unexpected source – the leader of an opposition party, no less. DAP chairman Karpal Singh voiced out his displeasure over Kayveas’ behaviour and even went so far as to call for him to step down as member of parliament for Taiping. “Kayveas is steadily becoming an embarrassment, not only to his voters in the Taiping parliamentary constituency, but the country as a whole. “Politicians should think before they speak, and not the reverse,” he said in a statement yesterday. Karpal said the government should upgrade Tamil schools, giving Indians their fair share of seats in universities and colleges in the country, and do away with discrimination against Indians in public service. “The government should strive for meritocracy which should be the acid test for public service and enrolment in universities and colleges,” he added.

astronaut, cosmonaut or flight partcipant?

As our first astronaut was announced, together with the news that the second one will be sent as well "if the public wants us to" nonsense, there was some news on the status of our Dr Sheikh. It seems that NASA listed him as a "space flight participant" or in other words equating him with those USD20 million paying space tourists.

This forced DPM Minister JJ to say that Russia listed him as Cosmonaut, and we malaysians should not worry about what NASA says (after all, US and Russia are not exactly bosom buddies, right?)

Unfortunately, as shown in the Russian Space Agency site, Dr Sheikh is listed as flight participant as well!

Let's see what Wikipedia says:

An astronaut or cosmonaut (Russian: космона́вт IPA: [kəsmʌˈnaft]) is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. [1] While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the term is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.

Until 2003, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or by civilian space agencies. However, with the first sub-orbital flight of the privately-funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new category of astronaut was created—the commercial astronaut. With the rise of space tourism, NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency agreed to use the term "spaceflight participant" to distinguish those space travelers from astronauts on missions coordinated by those two agencies.

so, we are successfully launching our very own commercial astronaut/cosmonaut! congratulations 🙂

New toll rates by eight concessionaires from Jan 1
source
By CHRISTINA KOH

IPOH: Malaysians can expect a 10% increase in toll rates, with eight concessionaires raising their charges from Jan 1 next year, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. However, he said the ministry was working on several proposals to spread part of the cost to the concessionaires and the Government. “Rather than burden the people, we want to divide the load so the companies carry a bit and the people a bit.

“I will ask the Government how it can help in this situation,” he told reporters after launching a book on the Yayasan Strategik Sosial’s Plus 8 project here yesterday. Asked how much would the toll hikes actually involve, Samy Vellu said the agreement had stated a 10% increase.

“I have submitted a preliminary proposal and explained to the Cabinet what it would actually cost, what the reaction of people will be, what we can do as a government, what the concessionaires can do as responsible companies and what else can be done,” he said.

First Yoga conference in Malaysia

source

THE first Yoga conference in Malaysia will be held at the Sunway Convention Centre from Nov 8 to 10. As Yoga is about gaining health at all levels – Body, Mind and Spirit – and that without immersing into the practice, people will never transform themselves, the three-day event is themed Immersion of Transformation.

Organised by Yoga In Asia with The Yoga Zone Group Sdn Bhd as main sponsor, and in line with Visit Malaysia Year 2007, the conference is targeted at bringing together some 500 yogis at all levels: beginners, experienced yogis and teachers.

The Yoga Conference Malaysia 2007 will feature world-class yoga gurus of various traditions – from Australia, India, New Zea-land and the United States – who will conduct workshops and teach their style of yoga and share new knowledge and in-sights into yoga practices of the various traditions. It will provide continuous learning opportunities to yoga teachers and students, and networking opportunity for yoga teachers and related businesses in the wellness industry.

And, on the last day, there will be a Grant Satsang (a dinner gathering with all conference gurus and practitioners), a time to reflect on what each of us can go away with and apply immediately in our normal life.

This three-day conference is open to all Malaysians, as well as foreigners. The package is priced at RM1,980, with an attractive discount for early birds. This is a good opportunity to immerse into the practice and transform, to experience with other practitioners that yoga is not only good for those aspiring to the highest states of consciousness through meditation but that yogic practice and understanding can have a positive effect on our well-being in many dimensions of our normal daily lives.
