PKR crisis in Selangor

Looks like Khalil manages to find another issue to be embroiled in. He seems to be in the papers for all the wrong reasons nowadays.

Before ACA concluded their inquiry, he announced that his aide is suspended. The guy was not informed prior to the announcement it seems. The aide, Yahya Mat Sahri had quit the post and also as Selangor PKR secretary. I understand that the MB wants to show that there will be fair and unimpeded investigation, but he should have informed the affected party.

Meanwhile, several division heads in Selangor PKR are unhappy that key positions such as councilors were not being given to the party warriors, but instead allocated to professionals.

We are angry that many of our pejuang (party warriors), especially division heads, were not appointed into the government, including as local councillors.
We are not happy as the people we named were not only qualified but were with the party during reformasi (reformation) time and even braved teargas and beatings for the party,

Things are getting out of hand, just as I had predicted. See another media statement by Tony Phua this time….

Media Statement by Tony Pua in Petaling Jaya on Tuesday, 24th June 2008:

Regret that a member of a political party replaced a Petaling Jaya residents’ association president under the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) quota in Majilis Bandar Petaling Jaya (MBPJ)

In MBPJ, it was announced that there will be a total of 24 new councilors of which four of them are from PAS, seven from PKR and six from DAP, with the remaining seven councilorship to be appointed from non-partisan nominees, i.e. NGOs and RAs in Petaling Jaya.

It is an important change, when compared to the previous Barisan Nasional Government, that NGO members are appointed to the local council to ensure increased transparency and good governance, and to ensure special and needy interest groups are taken into account, such as the appointment of Anthony Thanasayan, president of the Animal Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association.

However, I have been informed that a member of a political party replaced a non-partisan local Petaling Jaya residents’ association president under the NGO quota in MBPJ. In addition, I’ve been made to understand that this was done at the very last minute to avoid possible objections to the move.

I’d like to express my regret and disappointment that such action has blemished an otherwise excellent step taken by the Selangor state government to include NGO participation while waiting for the local government to be democratically elected in the near future.

I’d like to call upon the Selangor state government to review its decision, to ensure that all party members are placed strictly within the party quotas i.e., 7 from PKR, 6 from DAP and 4 from PAS and only genuine and reputable NGO members as well as leaders of local residents’ associations are given strict priority.

Media Statement by Lau Weng San in Petaling Jaya on Friday, 20th June 2008:

A mockery for PR if partisan nominees appointed as councilors under NGO quota

It has been negotiated that there will be an average of 6 non-partisan councillors in each local council in Selangor excluding Orang Besar Kaya Besar Daerah (OKBD). In Selangor, there are altogether nine OKBDs in each local councils except for Petaling Jaya City Hall (MBPJ), Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ).

In Petaling Jaya City Hall, there will be a total of 24 new councilors of which four of them are from PAS, seven from PKR and six from DAP, with the remaining seven councilorship to be appointed from non-partisan nominees, i.e. NGOs and RAs in Petaling Jaya.

The Star Metro has published a list of councilors for MBPJ today and I was requested to comment on it. For a city with various active NGOs in town, political parties should not hijack councillorship reserved for NGOs and RAs in MBPJ.

Sad to say, from the list of unconfirmed names reported in the Star Metro today, I can notice that there are efforts by certain party to insert party members as councilors in MBPJ under NGO quota as there are only six NGO and RA councilors in the list, namely Richard Yeoh (TI), Anthony Thanasayagan (Coordinator of Malaysians Against Discrimination of the Disabled), Dr Melasutra bt Md Dali (Town Planner), Cynthia Manonmani a/p Michael Gabriel (Suaram), Derek Fernandez (prominent lawyer on local governance) and Paneer Sivam (labourer activitist) with no representatives from residents association.

It is my stand that the seven non-partisan nominees should be purely reserved for non-partisan nominees, i.e. NGOs and RAs in Petaling Jaya. Else it will be a mockery for Pakatan Rakyat.

As I see it, Khalid is under pressure from all sides. DAP is angry over allocation of MB, exco and council seats. PAS is also upset with the same issue. In addition they are unhappy that some of the PAS policies are not allowed to be implemented and PAS not given the due respect in decision making. They especially want Islamic policies to be adopted.

PKR members are angry because they expected lucrative contracts to be handed out and council seats to be given to key leaders. At the moment the people who are upset are the junior people. But it is a matter of time the others get impatient and start to demand for contracts and posts.

While all these are going on, the Indians are left behind. No one is speaking or fighting for Indians. The Indian reps suddenly became so quiet unlike before the GE.

I would say this again. In Selangor, Indians are the biggest losers. There is no way that while all these conflicting interests are going on, PR would be interested in the wellbeing of Indians.

I think Khalid’s govt is only matter of months from collapsing and imploding. Even if he survives, he will be completely powerless MB. Not only he has to face his PR opponents, the BN folks are just waiting to pounce on him.

So, the question is now, where is HINDRAF ????? What are they doing about this ?

    • VJ says:

seems like you’ll simply pull in Hindraf for everything ……. next time if the battery of your watch ran empty do remember to give Hindraf HQ a call for solution.

You’re exposing weakness in PR which is fine . Yet you’ve forgotten that turmoil also going on within BN (especially in umno) . Well we dun have to expose that becos the whole nation knows and watching . Good luck .

Didnt I say this before….MB Khalid announced that his aide was cleared without waiting for ACA’s investigation to be completed. Thus effectively he was lying…

ACA forwards probe report to prosecutors

    2008/06/25

SHAH ALAM: The Anti-Corruption Agency has yet to decide whether to charge Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s special officer, Yahya Sahri, with alleged abuse of power in the awarding of cleaning contracts. Selangor Anti-Corruption Agency director Jaafar Ma’ahad said investigations had been completed into the matter with a report forwarded to the agency’s prosecution division.

“It’s up to them to charge him or not,” he said.

It had earlier been reported that the ACA probe had discovered Yahya had been guilty of “improper conduct” and not of involvement in wrongdoing.

Yahya had been alleged to have written supporting letters for cleaning and garbage collection to be awarded to several companies in Petaling Jaya.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, said in Parliament yesterday that the ACA had not completed investigations in the matter.

“I understand that the case is still under investigation and that there is no official statement from the agency that investigations to the matter had been completed,” he said in a response to Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.

  5. VJ says:

my dear Killer , if that’s the case in PR than do you know that in BN even though there’s evidence of wrongdoing of any MP/minister the top leadership will hide it under carpet without any single action .

  6. poobalan says:

I think Selangor will be less problematic, but Kedah may be otherwise. Nothing critical happened so far or else the media would have picked it up. I’m still searching for news reports on hotel staff forced to wear more “decent” clothings. Anyone can help?
What the community worries about is temples, Tamil schools, local issues, and MIC-bashing 🙂 If these can be fulfilled, it will be OK. Next will be economic issues. We have to hear from state MHS, Chamber of Commerce, HYO, etc if there are problems.
Funny enough, I haven’t seen any MIC leader highlighting the problems in the Pakatan states that affect the Indians. Where are those news? If MIC can “pounce” now instead of later, can make a bigger impact.
As for Hindraf, if it took 50 years for one rally, how long does it take for another? 120 days? Why don’t we start one Killer? 🙂 Hindraf 2 anyone?

    • Killer says:

On the contrary, Selangor and Perak are the most fragile. I very much doubt if Khalid can last long. If not for the govt collapse, he might be forced out as the MB.

Kedah govt, despite its bad publicity, is still strong.

It is not about critical issues in Selangor. But the state govt itself is very weak and the MB is very vulnerable.

At this rate, if Anwar cannot form the Federal govt, I have a feeling that the PR will break apart, starting from Selangor. What many people dont realise is the ugly in-fighting that going on within PR now, esp in Selangor and Perak.

As for rally, I am not going to waste my time by demonstrating…for I did not vote for PR nor I had high expectation. It is only fair that we give PR a chance to show what they can do. However, my concern is that they will destroy the state economy and drive away the investors. That would be disasterous.

Penang is facing similar problem with investors ready to leave. I was just informed this afternoon that Samsung had decided to invest in the Philippines instead of Penang for their new US $1 Billion IC factory.

As for Indians, they will just ignore us. Anyway I will leave it to HINDRAF to answer to the Indian community. If PR failed to deliver their promises to indians it would mean that HINDRAF betrayed the community.

  7. poobalan says:

Now Khalid says its because of the aide using own account to collect funds in the name of PKR. Very suspicious indeed.

    ==========================================================

    http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Thursday/National/2277652/Article/index_html

An aide who resigned after he was suspended for misconduct may have transferred funds solicited from private companies for Pakatan Rakyat’s 100th day in office celebrations into a personal bank account, said the menteri besar.
Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the aide may have transferred the money to his own bank account under the guise of calling it a “PKR account”.

Abdul Khalid, at a press conference here yesterday, said the party was in the midst of determining if the account was a proper one belonging to the party.

The former aide to the menteri besar was also alleged to have written to various companies using the Selangor state government official letterhead for “donations” for the event.

The move particularly angered a Pakatan Rakyat component party, Pas, when the aide was found to have channelled the monies into a “PKR” bank account, all without Abdul Khalid’s knowledge.
It is understood that supporting documents of the bank account could not be found and that the aide was the only signee, not in accordance to the norm where bank accounts of organisations would have needed two signatories.

“We will get the money and channel it back into the state government account to be audited and then we will distribute it as agreed by the Pakatan Rakyat component parties,” Abdul Khalid said.

    • Killer says:

No lah, Khalid is saying the aide channelled the money into PKR’s account. If the aide wanted to cheat, the money would have gone to his personal account.

The aide is just a scapegoat. But the consequences of this action is far reaching. Khalid is new to PKR (joined in 2007 I think). But he has enraged the old members. This is going to divide the party and eventually kill of Khalid. I will give Khalid until Deepavali. He wont survive beyond that.
