MIC resolutions at recent convention

Similar stuff since I started going to school. Every AGM or general assembly will have similar requests – special units/agencies, convert Tamil schools status, more allocation for PNB shares, more places in public service, more airtime for Tamil programs, more allocation for entrepreneurs, public holiday for Thaipusam, and so on. Some were successful, others not. Let’s see if this one succeeds.

The MIC has asked the Government to set up units in several departments to resolve the problems of the Indian community.

Party deputy president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said this was necessary as the Government’s delivery mechanism was too slow in coping with the increasing problems of the community.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also Human Resources Minister, said the party had briefed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on the MIC request.

One request is to set up an agency in the Finance Ministry to increase the participation of Indians in the national economy, Dr Subramaniam said after opening the joint MIC Youth, Wanita, Puteri and Putera convention here yesterday.

In his speech, he told the four wings to reach out to professionals, the business community and university students.

“These people have distanced themselves from the party and have now become our biggest critics. If we can convince them, they will become our biggest supporters.”

“We must also have expert groups and knowledge squads to collect and disseminate information on Government projects and programmes to the ground,” he said.

In a resolution passed at the end of the MIC Youth assembly, the movement requested the Government appoint an Indian officer in ministries to handle the community’s affairs.

It was among nine resolutions approved at the meeting, which also included a call for stern legal action against Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali who had allegedly made racially-biased statements.

The wing also called for increased alllocations for the improvement of the 523 Tamil schools in the country as well as a religious department to handle non-Muslim affairs.

It also asked for an additional Cabinet post as well as a seat in the Pahang state executive council for the MIC.

Why the own coalition members did not support this motion? Should ADUN Manoharan modify his motion to include Chinese and Lain-lain as well?

KOTA Alam Shah state assemblyman M. Manoharan tried to move a motion at the Selangor State Assembly on Thursday to give a 7% discount on PKNS houses bought by Indians.

He said this was aimed at undoing the injustices of the previous Barisan Nasional government and also the Pakatan Rakyat state government because of the non-implementation of the Estate Workers Housing Scheme 1974, reported Tamil Nesan.

His motion was not supported by the 35 PKR, DAP and PAS state assemblymen, including the 12 Indian representatives.

Not sure what happened to the balance families that rejected the house offer initially. I think there were another 9 families.

Fifteen Kampung Buah Pala families who were evicted from their homes to make way for a housing project two years ago can look forward to a new life at the site of their former homes which has been renamed Taman Buah Pala.

Its residents association chairman R. Karunakaran said the new double-storey terrace houses offered as compensation for 15 families were recently completed.

“We are now eagerly waiting to move into the new houses next month. We are happy with the design of the houses which have three rooms, a balcony and a porch big enough to accommodate a car.

Work in progress: The houses still undergoing construction Taman Buah Pala.

“Each house with a built-up area of 1,200sqft is estimated to be worth RM500,000,” he said yesterday.

The village was a topic of controversy in 2009 when villagers tried in vain to continue living there despite a Federal Court decision ruling that they must make way for redevelopment.

Nine houses were also offered to nine families after they voluntarily moved out before the demolition.

Karunakaran said the developer had also allocated a land behind the houses to build a temple and a multi-purpose hall, which are presently under construction.

Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy said the villagers could expect to move in by August after the occupancy certificates had been issued by the Penang Municipal Council.

Usha Gopalan a woman in the scrap metal industry

ARMED with a passion for sales and marketing and a degree in Mass Communication, Usha Gopalan ventured into an industry where few women would go into — starting her own scrap metal company.

“What I like about sales and marketing, is the challenges I have to deal with, like approaching companies to try to get a tender and communicating with different people of different levels,” said the 39-year-old graduate from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.

The owner of Empire Tradelines Sdn Bhd said her firm deals with “100% scrap metal”, mainly with oil and gas companies.

“Scrap metal is a very competitive business that depends on volume, so it is challenging having to juggle the price and service war,” said Usha, adding that there are over 2,000 big and small companies involved in the industry alone.

No easy task: Usha is inspecting some beams and channels at a client’s workplace.

“I was the only female in the business when I ventured into scrap metal five years ago.

“The biggest challenge I had to deal with was perception. The initial years were tough, but I was determined to break into the male-dominated industry,” she added.

Usha said the nature of her job is physically demanding — something that requires on-site visits and walking in the hot sun — which is not something most women would jump into.

“I was lucky I had industry veterans to serve as my mentor.

“The people in the scrap metal industry are harder to convince compared with outsiders.

“As somebody different who stood out, my ‘disadvantage’ as a woman opened up opportunities.

“That gave me an edge as clients who were initially surprised were willing to try out my company’s services,” she said, revealing that she still receives mixed reactions from people within the industry.

Summarising what she does, Usha said she would buy high quality scrap metal that would then be sold to smelters in Malaysia or India.

“The metal, which is either melted or used in its original condition, is used for fabrication purposes, usually as materials in the construction and transportation industries.

“Scrap metal is a relatively recession-proof industry, as there will always be waste,” she said.

Usha is proud that Empire Tradelines has grown from a team of two to a company of six, all of whom are women.

“None of us had any background in scrap metal, but I believe that women are as equally capable as men. Women are focused, hardworking and particularly good with follow-ups.

“When I started off, I was negotiating with 50 tonnes (50,000kg) per deal. Now I am handling 2,000 tonnes (2mil kg) per deal,” she said.

Usha’s Kuala Lumpur-based office presently deals with both Malaysian and foreign companies in Perth, Melbourne and Fiji.

“In terms of future plans, I hope to work with other industries that have scrap metal like construction and electronics, and expand my business internationally by venturing into the Middle East.

“The challenges and profits I make are what continue to excite and drive me in what I do,” she said.

Usha expressed hope in seeing more women in the scrap metal industry.

“Women would be able to offer a fresh perspective.

“I believe that their meticulousness and determination to be able to execute their job are what make women more competent,” she said.

The mother of two girls credits her success to her husband Quentin Andre Louis and family’s support.

“I owe a lot to his understanding and support, without whom I would not be able to do what I am doing today.

“I would also like to pursue my first love for aeroplanes,” said Usha who spent a one-year stint as an air stewardess and is now working towards earning her private pilot’s licence.

“Aviation is another male-dominated industry with a lot of opportunities.

“I have been fascinated with aeroplanes since young, and my dream is to own my own hangar and single-engine planes one day,” she said.

MP for Bagan Serai had his fine reduced from RM3000 to RM1000, thus avoiding the situation where he will be ineligible for next election, if he stand for election.

The High Court in Penang reduced to RM1,000 the RM3,000 fine a magistrate’s court imposed on Padang Serai MP N Gobalakrishnan, who was found guilty last year of obstructing a police officer in 2002.

Judge Zamani Abdul Wahab also ordered that Gobalakrishnan, who had paid the RM3,000 fine in full last year, be repaid RM2,000.

Gobalakrishnan had filed an appeal in the High Court in May last year, after the magistrate’s court fined him RM3,000 or six months’ jail for obstructing chief inspector V Saravanan from carrying his duty at Jalan Utama, George Town, at 12.20pm on Jan 29, 2002.

He was arrested for questioning police action in preventing about 30 supporters of the then Parti Keadilan Nasional from dancing during a Thaipusam celebration.

Met by reporters outside the court, Gobalakrishnan said he would continue to discharge his duties as an elected representative.
