Putera MIC conducted their first ever (and I believe a first for any Indian political party) online chat on tertiary education for students. The chat was on their website. According to Malaysiakini:

The discussions – which lasted for seven hours – involved more than 50 people who were eager to find out about opportunities available in universities and other colleges.

The discussions dealt with a number of issues including grouses by students who had been offered courses that they did not apply for and the apprehension some had in studying at Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Labuan and the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in Kuala Terengganu.

There were also enquiries pertaining to the availability of scholarships, study grants and loans.

According to the panel of moderators, one option was for students to explore the Higher Education Ministry’s post-graduate study grants.

Students needing financial help were asked to check several websites (link is down – I checked twice in space of 11 hours) to find a comprehensive list of scholarships and grants available from various sources including the private and public sectors.

The MIC wing also offered students the option to check on job vacancies and scholarships via Facebook.

The online chat began at 10.30am and ended at 5.30pm.

The session was moderated by Putera MIC members who were former university students as well as several local university staff members.

Putera chief coordinator P Kamalanathan said he was happy with the response to the live chats.

“Based on the good response, we would extend this chat session to discuss other issues as well,” he told Malaysiakini.

Its a good effort. However, they should have done more publicity by informing the cyber community in advance of such a chat session.

Secondly, the Facebook link points to a group called United Malaysian Indian. Not sure how the two entities are related as I believe the FB group is not politically-affiliated with any party. Anyway, possibly a misreporting or just ad-hoc c0operation between them.

After the launch of MIC’s new portal nearly two weeks ago, I dropped the site today. To be slight surprise, it was updated!!!

I have to admit, that I was taken aback a bit. Didn’t really expect any changes since the launching day. Means there’s some full time staff taking care of the site, and there’s coordination between the PR people and website team to ensure materials from events are promptly updated on site.

Well done. Let’s hope its not a hangat-hangat tahi ayam thing. I’ll be watching….

It was with great anticipation that I surfed to www.mic.org.my to view MIC’s new website (it was first mentioned last year April). Well, at first look, its not great. But for me function is more important than form and I lowered my expectation. It has a poll sections, blog section, video and photo gallery. I’ll say its still work in progress, maybe 50% complete.

By the way, first time I browsed the URL, there was an error, but it disappeared when I refreshed the page.

The new portal was launched by Information Minister Rais Yatim.

Samy has high hopes for the portal:

Meanwhile MIC president S Samy Vellu stressed that the content of the website must be made most attractive to the younger generation.

“The most important and challenging aspect of the MIC portal is the content. It must be constantly updated with real-time news so that the portal will capture the minds of the people, especially the youths.

“The MIC portal will now be the centre of information for the Indian community to attain the latest and accurate information on MIC,” he said.

Samy Vellu, who has come under attacks by many after the party suffered a devastating loss in the general election last year, lashed back at his critics that the website will regain MIC’s glory.

“The community can now interact and communicate with MIC officers any time and anywhere in real time. We want to hear from the community, we want them to tell us what they want and how we could assist them.

“When we do mistakes, we want the community to let us know, to advise us and make recommendations,” he said.

“This is the kind of relationship we want to have with the community… even before this, the MIC was able to read the pulse of the Indian community but perhaps there existed a gap, and this led to many Indians, especially the younger generation keeping away from the Barisan Nasional.

However he said tha this gap could be bridged with the launch of the portal.

If indeed the portal is able to be a focal point – an OSC – for the community, it will be great. For that, it must look something like www.gov.my, but at the the moment, the site needs a lot of rework. Also, there’s a problem of coordinating information from various sources. It requires huge resource. Not many Indian-based websites are able to arrange such information and cater for the community.

For example, if you browse the Education section under Opportunities menu, you will find Scholarship by MARA, (!) plus few other entries that have expired.  Its not easy to run a portal. Definitely need at least 3 full time staff – one designer, one content manager, and one programmer/developer.

Anyway, the portal has a e-community and e-feedback function whereby makkal can write in their problems/complaints etc. I think  one should give it a try and see if its effective or not before passing judgement. I know I will be trying it soon.

Oh ya…forget to add, I was being quite lenient and generous when evaluating the website. I can already hear it coming – WHAT??? No Facebook? No Twitter? No Youtube? Want to attract younger generation??? No RSS also??? Want to attract Internet savvy generation? Who are they trying to kid?

This doesn’t really surprise many of us. We have seen the impact of Internet in highlighting social issues, elections, e-commerce, and even crime. The survey by Synovate had the following to report:

– about 45 percent of the Malaysian youth interviewed in the survey said they planned to use the Internet more than other media.

– young Malaysians were active bloggers with close to half (48 percent) spending a portion of their time blogging.

– a total of 21 percent of Malaysian youngsters create and update their blogs regularly and this figure is expected to rise

– young Malaysians aged eight to 24 spend an average of 1.2 hours a day on email, one hour and thirty-six minutes a day as part of online communities, two hours and 48 minutes on instant messaging and two hours and 36 minutes on other Internet activities.

“Young Malaysians are definitely turning to the Internet more for their information and entertainment needs and it’s not surprising that the Internet is slowly becoming the medium of choice,” said managing director of Synovate in Malaysia, Steve Murphy.

The survey covers 12 markets across Asia, including Japan and Vietnam for the first time. Besides Malaysia, the other markets were China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
