WHILE many in Batang Kali prefer not to do anything about the general cleanliness of their neighbourhood, 13-year-old T. Aaron does his bit for the environment while earning some pocket money for himself.

Every day after school and during weekends, he would ride his bicycle and collect recyclable items people have left behind.

Enterprising: Aaron collects recyclables which he then sells to earn some pocket money.

His efforts have not only helped him financially but have also helped get rid of unwanted items that would otherwise become potential breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“Sometimes, when people move out, they throw away a lot of stuff including recyclable items that I can sell. If I am lucky, I even get some metal pieces discarded by residents,” he said.

Aaron said he sold the items he collected to his uncle who runs a recycling business.

He admitted that at the beginning he felt embarrassed when his friends gave him disgusted looks every time they saw him collecting the recyclable items, but now he was not bothered as he knew that he was not doing anything wrong.

In fact, he helps clean the neighbourhood and earns some pocket money at the same time.
