MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu today launched a stinging attack against a non-governmental organisation, the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF), which claimed that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had done little to address the woes of the Malaysian Indian community over the last 50 years.

“I must state here that if there is anything that affects the Indian community, the MIC will be there to fight it out even when we are partners of the Barisan Nasional. To me, I have never remained idle and I don’t waste time,” Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, told Bernama today.

The MIC supremo was asked to comment on a 18-point memorandum by HINDRAF, which was handed to the Prime Minister’s office last Sunday by the organisation’s chairman P. Waytha Moorthy, secretary V.K Regu and its legal adviser P. Uthayakumar.

Apart from stating that the Indian community was marginalised by the BN government, in the memorandum, HINDRAF also wanted an end to special privileges given to Malays. The memorandum also took a dig at Umno asking the largest political party in the country to “stop playing politics” through the “mandore” (supervisor) system by dishing out aid to the Indian community on a piecemeal basis.

When I read about the police and authorities EXPECTING violence – and the fact that roadblocks are being conducted to sift out potential “troublemakers” based on their ethnicity… I’m just amazed at how WRONG, how RACIST, how DISCRIMINATORY it is and the truth of the matter that you have to be born the “approved” color and religion to be regarded as part of the country, regardless of being born here, how much your parents and their parents and their parent’s parents have given to the country in terms of building it hand in hand with everyone else, only to be marginalized indefinitely until the majority learns to play on an even field without crutches and handouts.
I am proud of all the different ethnicities that make my family and my identity – and still naively holding on to the dream that one day this country will hold all its citizens equal. Like an actual democracy. And as the days go on and things like this and Bersih happen I realise that maybe if equality is what we seek – Malaysia is NOT the country to live in.
To my brothers and sisters who are in the gathering tomoro – please take care of each other. And maybe change the direction of the march to those who were supposed to protect the well-being and rights and growth of the Indian people in this country and ask them to answer to this issue as old as the DEB – “Are you REALLY going to sit back and watch your people get treated this way? Do we all just sit back and accept status quo of racial discrimination in our constitution as permanent and unquestionable? Are we Malaysians – or do we need tonnes and tonnes of Fair & Lovely and Clorox to bleach ourselves to a more agreeable color to deem ourselves the rights of proper citizens in this country?

Dear fellow Malaysian ,

I felt the urge to post on my thought as malay over some of the objective of hindraf, particularly on nep or special rights to bumis.

My point here is for the sake of security, i hope hindraf plays the note well to other ears. I’m sure should you were bestowed some rights, you would refuse to get it removed by anyone.

Regardless of the above, I would applaud your fight for better and fairer treatment from the government. I do pity many of unfortunate and poor malaysian indians who were deprived of what should have been given to them in fair manner.

Basically it is not nep or malays special rights that oppressed the indians but the real culprit are our leaders. nep and others were meant to stabilise and harmonise the country by giving balance to economic wealth between the races. However, nep & others were rendered ineffective to to the greedy nature of the leaders. Even though with special rights, you could see, just say KL, how many do you see malay businesses along the road? , not to say the big houses area. And of course, almost none were indian (of coz, som of u would say- served the malay well because they are lazy- what if you are in our shoe?). -no offence to chinese, u deservedly got yours.

What happen at the top was they are circulating or distributing wealth only to ‘kroni’. the supposedly receiving rakyat were left to themselves. And to indian, what is already small chunk will become smaller after eaten up by the big boss. the good budget were not spread well.

Sum it all up. We should topple the current government and that is what hindraf should encourage and please dont put such requests to take our rights – it might cause unnecessary fire that we dont need at the moment. Give new government and leaders a chance. Hope my points is understood. -peace-

I think for some reason that this approach is not going to get us Indians in Malaysia anywhere. Don’t get me wrong, i favour equality and justice. I do believe very strongly that being called a “Malaysian” and being treated as a true “Malaysian” is 2 different things; but that is not the Britishs’ fault neither is it the BSN’s! Every leader of a race in malaysia only wants to make sure that the rights of their people is taken cared of and that they are not exploited in anyway. The same here! The party that should be held responsible here is the leader of the Isdians in Malaysia- the person elected to protect our rights and freedom!! So i really believe that what HINDRAF is doing deserves a thumbs-up, but the approach is not sensible. To file a suit for RM14trill for the marginalization that took places 150 years ago by the British is not necessary. Instead, it would be more appropriate to question the ruling of this country with the help of the international courts or the Queens council.

I think MIC should go to hell, HINDRAF should be come a political party. I’m sure we can see A LOT of changes. Where on earth was MIC when the tempels went down?! There was no word from them AT ALL! And today, the peacefull gathering by HINDRAF was torn away by Police…why?!
