Samy Vellu hits back at Hindu Rights Action Force

PUTRAJAYA, FRI:

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu today launched a stinging attack against a non-governmental organisation, the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF), which claimed that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had done little to address the woes of the Malaysian Indian community over the last 50 years.

“I must state here that if there is anything that affects the Indian community, the MIC will be there to fight it out even when we are partners of the Barisan Nasional. To me, I have never remained idle and I don’t waste time,” Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, told Bernama today.

The MIC supremo was asked to comment on a 18-point memorandum by HINDRAF, which was handed to the Prime Minister’s office last Sunday by the organisation’s chairman P. Waytha Moorthy, secretary V.K Regu and its legal adviser P. Uthayakumar.

Apart from stating that the Indian community was marginalised by the BN government, in the memorandum, HINDRAF also wanted an end to special privileges given to Malays. The memorandum also took a dig at Umno asking the largest political party in the country to “stop playing politics” through the “mandore” (supervisor) system by dishing out aid to the Indian community on a piecemeal basis.

Though I m not living in Malaysia, I am still truly a Malaysian Indian and often come back to visit my family members. I whole heartedly support the actions HINDRAF is taking. We Malaysian Indians, especially all Hindus must not stop here and must continously give support for all the good things HINDRAF is trying to do for us. And please don’t blindly vote for BN, think wisely before u vote in the soon coming general election. There’s no point voting for a government which doesn’t support us in any way, but only step on our heads! Help open all those poor and less educated indians’ eyes who are living in the estates. They need our help.
    May GOD bless HINDRAF.

    Helma Noor,

Again your claim is presumptious, baseless and lack of evidence. You don’t talk like oppositor to make your case. They work on the basis of condemnation, regardless of the many goods as oppose to the few bad. The country run by this goverment has provided me condusive infra for me to achieve my goals. You understand prioritization and resource management. You need wealth to create wealth distribution. Few rich individual will create lots of opportunities to many people. BN and UMNO does that very well, what we enjoy now is the evidence. However still many more betterment are needed. The framework is there, participate, vote your choice, play your role as civilize Malaysians. Not narrow minded plight for just Hindu, Islam, etc. Let the system work, don’t have “Hasad Dengki”. If they rich, they surely spend, financial life cycle, ask them to think about others who need it. Be part of the society, get involve with society building, help in whatever way we can. I’m not keen into politics, not keen into business, but I’m keen into nation building through socializing with the masses. As muslim I choose to do it moderately, within my ability, positive not negative, we have our Prophet Muhammad SAW leadership to learn from. If you choose to support disharmony, unrest, economic turmoil, I can’t tolerate that, 100% against it. I’ll choose to support BN since they ensure stability and racial harmony. The oppositor has no ground to work among themselves, no leadership towards racial harmony. They propergate peoples to hate UMNO, BN that have majority support, is just like encouraging the minority to hate majority. How do you think racial and political harmony can be achieve. Oppositor learn so much from western politics, lack of genuinity, lack of charisma and most importantly lack of capability. This is Malaysia, everything must be in context of Malaysia polical textures. You can’t wipe out UMNO, UMNO is Malay, Malay is UMNO. Everything has to be align with them, not against them. Even Keadilan and PAS leadership the loudest come from UMNO. Now Hindraf propegated hatered against Malay, UMNO and BN. You all support it for more harm than good. When you threaten Malay and UMNO, you make them united and strong. When they strong MIC, MCA and rest of BN components will align to the strongest. I’m 40+, I’ve learn Malaysia politics, I vote oppositor before, mostly I vote BN. I’m Malaysian, true Malaysian, I’m not that kind of “bakar kelambu kerana nyamuk seekor” .. we need to work within the system not out of it, unless you choose to against the system, then I’ll not condone to such act.

  4. shivva says:

The struggle must not stop here! You must show it 2 all those MIC cronies who have abondoned the indians. they should know that every vote counts.Dont fall prey to sweet talks n empty promises showered in every area during elections. Do not be fooled with the instant kindness and sudden positive changes they bring in your residential area. Put up a big smile, enjoy the changes but in the end, don’t vote for them.

  5. tuah67 says:

why aren’t out there Malaysia context of oppositors, who propegates and champions new reform, call for unity, praised every members of the community be it Malays, Indian, Chinese, etc. Genuine and capable leadership. Fight corruptions through fasting, set dramatic examples. Go through hardships, prove your point in such honestly manners. Where people will actracted to them, the UMNO members actracted to them, the Malays actracted to them, young and elderly, rich and poor. Leader that put people interest close in their heart and themself last. Do we have this quality leadership amongs oppositor … don’t think so ? for me BN still the best bet, I rest my case.

  6. INDIAN says:

HINDRAF………U AVE DONE A GUD JOB….V,INDIANS WIL ALWEZ SUPPORT U!!! SAMY VELU,GET LOST LA!!!!!U R GONE DIZ YEAR!!!V WONT REMAIN SILENT!!!!!

  7. Hari Krishna says:

    MP: edited for personal attack.

The fact remains that the MIC has been a divisive, unrepresentative, class ridden, bunch of houseboys of the BN. It has always been a cosmetic and willing seller of the rights of Indians and about as meritorious and representative of Indians as Bishop Abel Muzorewa was of Blacks in Rhodesia.

Samy Velu, his predecessors Manicka and Sambanthan were nothing more than self interested despots who indulged themselves, gouged the allocation of rights and benefits however meagre these were for Indians for themselves.

There will be no more turning back. We observe the struggle of Indians everywhere,. We aree over a billion strong. The Malaysian government (not the Malays per se) has drawn a line in the sand with the use of force. They have invited force not us. There is no such thing as a democratic nation giving ‘permission to express oneslef in a peaceful rally already denied before it began. Thats fascism. Inians have been silent for too long and thats been taken for granted as well as for stupidity and being timid.

Strangely the Chinese who have always complained about the lack of freedoms in Malaysia and always been the most vociferous critics of Malaysian government policies, today stand shoulder to shoulder with our oppressors the Malaysian government.

The same thing happened in Sri Lanka. The failure of government there to listen and toa ct on legitmate grievances has led to the unnecessary deaths of over 70 thousand people and a bitter never ending civil war.

It is up to the Indians to first remove those Indians who stand in our way. The middle classes who are all too ashmaed to be associated with those they consider a lesser species. Then to remove those from other non Malay communities who ridicule us through the press. Then to ensure discipline and to maintain the flawless orgnisaitonal lines that has now made us a tlking point. They will not muzzle us. The blood of Indians was shed during world war 1 and 2 in defence of this country. We have a god given right to be heard and to express ourselves freely. If not then we will have to fight for it and take it to the streets.

Let them jail us. Let them build jails large enough to accommodate all of us. Let us show them how bitter this struggle can get if they violate us. let us also show them that we hold an olive branch in our hands and not a white handkerchief of surrender.

Malaysia has a world renowned racist political ideology. That includes the Chinese attitudes towards us. It is they who corrupt government, it is they whointroduced the many vices from prostitution and drugs and now having succeded there dress up like politicians and businessmen.

Let us quietly mnitor and identify those in our ranks who betray us. The journalists without spine amongst the Indians who write scrullious dammning aritcles and editorials about us and our suffering.

In the end we believe “there is nothing more powerful than an event whose time has come”. You are either with us or against us Samy velu and all you so called middle class Indians who are at the root of the problem. “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem”>

Step down Samy velu. Get a career like your ******** on the internet being obscene for all to see. get out of our lives. Imbeccile.

    Pullighal Makale

  8. Hari Krishna says:

Hindraf all the way. Dare to be defiant. Dare to stand up, Dare to court arrest.

Now we really and finally have a voice. Not a begging bowl that Samy Velu and his MIC beggars have done for ages. We do not want the scraps from a BN table, we want what is rightfully ours and it is for us to determine that.

THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING MALAYSIA. YOUR VENEER THIN ECONOMY WILL COLLAPSE IF WE AGITATE. DON’T GIVE US THAT OPPORTUNITY WITH YOUR OPPRESSIVE AND INSULTING CONDUCT. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR PAST.ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR COMPLICITY IN THE ENSLAVEMENT OF INDIANS.

SAMY VELU.NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO STAND UP LIKE A MAN. YOUR DAYS AS OUR REPRESENTATIVE ARE NUMBERED AS YOU DID NOT REPRESENT US EVER. IT WAS ALWAYS TOKEN REPRESENTATION. YOU ARE NO LONGER YOUR VOICE.

BE UNSELFISH. STEP DOWN AND BE SEEN TO BE A LEADER WITH COURAGE TO FACE YOUR FAILURE. IF YOU REPRESENTED US WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO TAKE TO THE STREETS. THIS IS NOW A WORLD ISSUE. YOU CANNOT TURN THE PAGES BACK.

MALAYSIA’S WAFER THIN ECONOMY WILL COLLAPSE. ALREADY HOLIDAY CANCELLATIONS ARE EMERGING. INVESTMENT WILLR ECEDE. SHOW COURAGE SAMY.

Hindraf valghe!!! and to all those who gathered on the rally…we thank you for the hardship and turbulences u all went through for the future of Malaysian Indians.

Hats off to all of you!!! You are our heroes!!! For those of you who could not make it to the rally, let your voices be heard in the coming election…

So please make the right and wise decision now….It in your hands that can shape our future for better.

  12. SayYesToMIC says:

To all HINDRAF members…talk and comments to much..but no action..did you realise many of yr members are not educated and poor, easily been persuade by money by the stupid and mad lawyer..HINDRAF terrorist..police will kill each of you…police will put all indians in lokap, if lokap full, police will put you in HELL!!

  13. Nanda says:

    Three Cheers to HINDRAF!!!

More cheers to have pulled off such a peaceful protest and to have brought out the plight of Malaysian Indians to the world media. THE most important part of the rally was the peace because that brings the atrocities of the Malaysian police to the forefront. Now the govt has no blame game on it’s side.

The tempo should be kept alive. All Malaysian Indians in all walks of life should pool in their efforts to keep the movement alive. For those who could not afford due to any reason whatsoever to physically be in the crowd, now the chance is yours. Publicize the event to all your friends. Let everyone know how MULTICULTURAL Malaysia is. How TRULY ASIA Malaysia is.

God be with HINDRAF…God be with the Malaysian Indians.

  14. shark777 says:

to all my frens, yes I agreed that the HINDRAF issue is not a racial issue, but what the other opinion?? can we imagine if we got what we fight here…I am sure that other races will do the same thing like us did. at the end our Malaysia will become as same as the other “wilayah bergolak” such as thailand, bangkok etc. and as the result, we cannot life in harmony and freedom just like we already got now.. that all my frens think carefully before we act..i will always support indians…

  15. Sekretariat Akhbar says:

    Hi,
How much is the tax you guys pay for goverment? Is it 50% of your salary? Macam ler besar sangat cukai yangg korang bayar tu. Nak ungkit-ungkit pasal cukai konon. berlagak betul, If salary below RM 2500 no need to pay tax ler. That mean you guy had salary more than RM 2.5k ler yer. Autar jer lebih…

  16. Vijay says:

    HINDRAF SUCK!!!…
Always make our country unstable. My advice is please don’t choose a ‘rubbish’ to be our leader. That rubbish who use demonstration as a good way to present our feelings is annoying. support ISA.. ISA…ISA

  17. Helma Noor says:

    Dear Tuah67,
As a muslim myself, we must help poor people irregardless of their race. I really do not understand why you didn’t utter a statement like “we need to help poor people” but instead choose to says words like – #“Hasad Dengki”. If they rich, they surely spend, financial life cycle, ask them to think about others who need it.#
Since you are not interested into business or politics then don’t vote for any political parties, stay out of the system and help the poor if you can, but if you can’t help the poor, then please don’t say anything. Anyway, about infrastructure…didn’t you just read the news today? goto :-
    http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/11/27/nation/20071127165133&sec=nation
a crack in the Penang bridge!!! still called that good infra??? You must be kidding!!! There’s crack everywhere including the new high court that have been build recently which is flooded. All this shows that the works minister is not doing his homework. Don’t forget, our Malaysian govt just send a space tourist called angkasawan to space for RM30 over million just to go for a 10 days holiday in a russian spaceship, this RM30 million which is your taxes that you have paid and also taxes that all Malaysians have paid should go to helping the poor. Do you know that RM30 million can feed how many muslims in our country?? Are you saying that RM30 million should just be spend on a 10 days holiday in space???
You use word like “You can’t wipe out UMNO, UMNO is Malay, Malay is UMNO.” Bear in mind not all malays support UMNO. 60% of the population in Malaysia is malay which is about 16.8 million base on 28 million Malaysians. UMNO only have less then 3 million members. That means there’s another 14 million malays which is non-UMNO members. So don’t use the word UMNO=Malay and Malay=UMNO (very disgusting) I myself is a muslim and I have a few hundred muslim friends whom are malays who disassociate themself from UMNO, please have some respect for all our muslim and malays friends who are not UMNO members. And also please have some respect for our chinese and indian friends as well. Don’t sell UMNO like UMNO is a triad or some kinda roman empire. Malaysia is just a tiny dot in the world map, UMNO is not the biggest triad in the world….Encik Tuan67, please be more careful with your words, do not paint UMNO like a powerful roman empire otherwise you will cause other nations to despise or isolate muslims and malays from our chinese and indian friends.
    Thank you.

“Malaysia Kita” if had time. Malaysia Goverment admitt the deny any
funding to Kelantan state. But we can takes all the challenge. We are
progresive in education and Economic. There are many excel in PMR and SPM from sekolah-sekolah pondok, were teacher are paid around 1 Thousand a months. Each year many get 10A and above a came from this schools. And without any Biasiswa most of them are able to studying in Mesir, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Everydays TV 1 keep telling kelantanease are poor in this and this. Come and visit Kelantan and see for yourself, you can find there are many personal building and shophouse under the name of Kelantan Personals(NON POLITICIAN) and there are NO “PROJEK BARISAN NASIONAL” building as been scatter around such other place. I don’t understand when came to failure you guys keep blamming the goverment. Hey did gov ever help chinease to their success? why Indonesian can own bunglows in Pencahla and Gombak? Where is you pride? Do you think 1 Million Rinngit each Indian will change the fate of Indian people in future. I would like to know, which party will indian vote in future? For Malays they had PAS and Chinease had DAP. What party did Indian had to fight for their right? Hindraf is not a party? Just asking.

***pst 1: sorry my English is Not good as Indian People but I drove BMW X5 and had bunglow house in KL. I just sell pakaian bundle, pakaian second hand.My friend from kelantan sell water in pasar Malam had untung RM 500 per night. Other friend Sell burgers and Jagung rebus, also able to get RM 7000 untung bersih every months. See how easy to get money in KL..It all about money right or what? it money matterkan?

***pst 2: If I sue Japan Emperor because invade Kota Bharu Kelantan in 1942, How much I should ask from Japan Gov? They more cruel than British right. But now they are rich than British Gov Now. Emm very good idea. Maybe we can do gathering again to send memorandum to Japan embassy then.

  19. KALAI says:

To Mr. UNKNOW SAYS, we did not say, only we Indians have developed this country, pls. understand that first. I dont know where have you study the history of Independant of Malay,
But what I know, is that all 3 communities, have worked for it. I HOPE YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THIS FIRST. dont just say it out, what you have learn from school. Check all areas, my dear friend.
What we want is a FAIR TREATEMENT IN ALL AREAS.
We never want to question or take away your rights, just show some respect for us, that’s all.
Finally, a friendly advice, PLEAS READ ALOT OF BOOKS on how Malaysia became a great nation, from there you will know what is our contribution, or just as the former leaders.

  20. SKMK says:

    MP: edited for insulting words.

All the shit of each leader trying to be a public hero, Once had he became the leader, he or she wil be the next Mr. Samy, so what are you people trying to do is wrong and there is nobody to help. If you have a house (your own) and can feed your children (plus you & wife) full daily meal in this Country is very good enough. So why the photo “placard” of Mahatma Gandhi doing in Malaysia You should be proud of youself been a Malaysian Citizen and no Indian citizen (which you would be one of thousands living in poverty in INDIA which is been ruled by the high class people and in Malaysia whether you *******, ******* or what ever the respect is still there and your neighbours malay chinese punjabi (excluding bangla nepalese negro)living happily provided we respect of each others right. So THINK, have a peaceful life ahead here, SO what HINDRAF, BERSIH, MIC, BN PAS DAP or what it is can and cannot do for us but for themselves only.

  21. SKMK says:

Whomever is replacing Samy is going to be well…errr the next Samy. No different. With your kind of political style e.g. baling-baling kerusi, discrimination among castes, there’s no doubt that the next leader will do whatever it takes to cling on to his power & position a.k.a. Samy Vellu style. The problem is not UMNO, Abdullah Badawi, MIC, MCA or what not. Go to the bathroom. Look carefully into the mirror. No, you can’t find the problem there. Now take your clothes off, look again into the mirror. There’s your problem!!! It all lies within yourselves. While other people are busy sending their children to extra tuition classes and going to libraries in droves, you pathetic people chose to create havoc, violence and hatred. Assuming that Queen Elizabeth is at the same level as you street protesters, which is highly unlikely, the first person to benefit out of this compensation is the lawyer, not the estate people. Yesss! A good lawyer is a good liar. Think about it.

  22. Hindraf……………
I think it is a great chance 2 all indianzzz.
Grab tiz oppurtunity.V should fight for our rightz.
    I am alwayz ther 2 raise up my voice.Think wat v gonna be in 50 years more.If not now,wen iz it…………………….HIDUP HINDRAF//

  23. Citizen says:

    Dear all,

Hope you all have read the papers today about what our fellow brothers did in Brickfields on Monday.

On Sunday, they went to an Indian restaurant and after having their meal refused to pay for it. They claimed to be Hindraf members and since they were fighting for Indian rights, they said they should not be asked to pay. The manager let them go with out paying because he did not want any problems.

These men came back on Monday and after having their meals, took out their parangs and went on a rampage. They damaged the restaurant’s furniture and equipment, thrashed the food AND slashed two workers. So much for being Indian. They caused harm and loss to fellow Indians who were trying to earn a decent living.

What are they are gonna ask next? Free education? Free homes? Free cars? What?

This is exactly why the government did not give permission to the rally. Now, some irresponsible beings are distorting the fight for fair rights!

And the British Embassy says they did not receive the memo when some Hindraf members claimed that they faxed the memo thru?

    Whats happening?

  24. gandhi says:

    MP: edited for insulting words.

I don’t think you guys know what & how humiliation is/was!!

Your ancestors who were naturally, initially reluctant to be sent to MALAYA when the British brought them, were all GRATEFUL to be the “chosen” ones to be hired as rubber tappers here in peaceful, respectful Malaya!!

Do you know that in India with all those castes, especially during those days, you ***** people were treated worst than DOGS? Spat upon & hurled down the streets? Please!

Well do the chinese complained when the British brought their ancestors here & they chose to be Malaysians?? Nope!.. They worked hard to be rich & not lazy to be bumbs!

I am ashamed of you! Sincerely, “Gandhi”.

  25. gandhi says:

    Praba, good points! Cheers.

  26. gandhi says:

One more thing you fellas always shamed the Indians..
Aren’t you people aware that everywhere in the world there are bound to be fights between groups/gangs which are usually race-based??

You complained about kg. medan. As far as we Malaysians are concerned, we know that that is only 1 isolated incident!
In the US itself, there are hundreds of racial gang fights in many of their cities! How about in London, Paris, or even in Sydney??

Haha! In ACTUAL FACT, you people are highlighting to the world that Malaysia IS REALLY peaceful!!.. with only 1 gang fight!

I AM VERY ASHAMED OF YOU INDIANS AT HINDRAF FOR HURTING OUR FELLOW MALAYSIANS’ HEARTS AND OUR HOME MALAYSIA….

    Very sincerely, “Gandhi”.

    2. Recent budget, there is no single cents allocated for the Tamil schools…the fact is this tamil schools student only excelling in the exams compared to other schools..

    3. Our temple demolishments with full of violence, tis is wht we consider as democaracy is it??

Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2007, is tis one of the tactics our government use to rope in more tourist by demolishing temples, sorry to say this lah…tourist will never want to visit if tis kinda things keep on happening…..

Well abt MIC n their chronies, every indians in Malaysia knows that all of u are good for nothing..So rather than blaming n throwing out false statement, y dont u all MIC people shut up n mind ur own business..All tis while tats wht all of u been doing…Dont claim that u r all a Tamilian…its a shame for our entire community!

I may have put in my comments yesterday on this website or a different website.

Nevertheless…….I like to say that it is obvious to me as a Singaporean visiting Malaysia from time to time, that the Indian Community is the more economically disadvantaged community.

Emotions are running high about HINDRAF as can be seen in the comments on this site.
But there are also very sensible comments.
Read them carefully, analyse what has brought the Indian community to this stage, weed out the trouble makers or (too emotional members )who claim to be HINDRAF members.Only if HINDRAF members think out carefully, unemotionally, its difficult to press your cause succesfully.

Its interesting to see how many of you view Samy Vellu as an ”inappropriate leader”.
Not having seen all these remarks, yesterday I commented that I would not want a leader who dresses in $5000 suits & $5000 shoes ! A good leader will use that money to help his poorer subjects!

Samy, a simple batik shirt would suffice.

    ——————————————————

Mmmm .. there are obviously some (thankfully only a few) on this blog site who really don’t get it! The legal suit against the British Government is … well NOT about the legal suit at all!!

Hey WAKE UP people! There are those who are ASHAMED with HINDRAF’S actions?!! These are obviously MIC folk who are doing their level best to stop the steam roller. So the rest of you just ignore these morons! MIC is a gonner. The party is irrelevant. All those who depend on MIC for a living better start looking for another job! Look at Devamany – he has realized what he needs to do if he wants to survive in politics. See how quickly he is singing a different tune. You other morons better take a leaf out of his book.

Address the issues. Go to the root problem. Stop slandering each other and making idle threats. Try and be rational – not emotional. And most importantly, lets try and keep the momentum going at least until the next general elections.

    Have a nice day!

You guys have to think rationally to support for the Hindraf Rally. 50 years we have sense og belongings to Malaysia… but then when Hindraf make this racially issues… some indians obviusly not aware of our peace and harmonies. In this live we have to think rationally…we have to think a lot…feeding our children, freely to study and the harmony of our citizens. Don’t just simply think Malaysia as same as pakistan, India Sri Lanka or Bangladesh…

we want peace and harmony… not “rally” in this country.

  44. Tamilan says:

    Great job HINDRAF !
We should stay united for such Positive moves.
    Let’s show the move.

Together we will make the difference.

  45. To all bloggers who support the UMNO cronies, please be reminded that when UMNO wins the next election here’s what they will do :-
    1. Toll increase from RM1.60 to 2.90
    2. Petrol subsidy taken away, now is RM1.92 per liter and when no subsidy is RM4.50 per liter
    3. All prices of drinks will increase, actually it is increasing already – 1 can of 100 plus is now RM2.10(today) only Oct 15 the same 100 plus is only RM1.60, when I ask why increase, the shop operator says petrol sudah naik, jadi bila order dari supplier, supplier kata mesti charge lebih untuk deliver 100 plus kepada kedai kita.
    4. Tax will go up soon, govt is paying up to RM1 billion per month on govt expenditure base on utilities, equipment and also the recently govt servants income increase by 30% to 50% My malay fren whom is working for govt, last year salary is RM2K but now her salary increase by RM2.8K so must tax the ordinary rakyat more to pay for the salary increase of our govt servants
    5. KLSE share prices will go down by 40% soon after election because our govt is using taxpayers money to push up the KLSE shares artificially just to let the rakyat know the our share prices is still very healthy but it is actually not.

So, rakyat especially the poor people including hardcore poor melayu, do you still want to vote the the corrupted govt??? I guess not, anyway we got so many corrupted govt servants in our country e.g. Samy Vellu and our Klang Assemblymen who build tons of bangalows on illegal land(you know who lar, our good friend Zakaria), why don’t the govt just bulldoze his bangalows just like our govt bulldoze the temples??? So wake up bumiputra, throw away your UMNO putra false status because the real con artist originates from UMNO cronies. One question, is Zakaria an UMNO member?? definately……

    NO HOLDS BARRED

    Raja Petra Kamarudin

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak once told TV3 in 2004 that if I have insulted Islam or the Rulers then I can be charged under the Sedition Act. And if there are no laws that I can be charged under, added Najib, then the government can always use the Internal Security Act (ISA) against me. Not long after that, they brought me in for interrogation under Section 112 for a crime under the Sedition Act. A week later, they raided my house and confiscated my computer as evidence.

This, we must remember, was after they had done the same about three years before that in 2001. On Hari Raya Haji Day of March 2001, they arrested me under no specific charge. (“Kita akan pikir kemudian,” they said, as they handcuffed me.) And, the next day, they raided my house to confiscate my computer. A month later, on 11 April 2001, they detained me under the ISA.

Well, it’s now three years since that 2004 episode, which, in turn, was also three years after the 2001 episode. It looks like every three years they need to come to my house to confiscate my computer and detain me under a charge they will ‘pikir kemudian’. I suppose, therefore, this time around it should be no different. So expect them to come to my house soon to confiscate my computer and probably arrest me and charge me under the Sedition Act — or maybe take the easy way out and use the ISA on me again.

The fact that my matter has been raised and heavily debated in the Lower House of Parliament, plus every Umno man and his dog (metaphorically speaking of course) has whacked me (and all bloggers in general), while Nazri Aziz and a horde of others have urged the government to use the ISA against me, probably means that the end is very near. (Not sure yet whether it is my end or theirs though).

Anyway, my reply to them is sharp and simple. Raja Petra seditious? Hogwash! If anyone is seditious it is Umno and until today those propagating a blood-bath have not been made accountable for their actions. Was it not Najib, that ex-Selangor Menteri Besar with two Muhamads in his name, and all those others calling for my detention under the ISA who raised their keris above their heads at the TPCA padang in 1987 and threatened to bathe it in Chinese blood? Was it not Umno in November 1999 during the ceremony to launch Barisan Nasional’s election machinery in the Bukit Jalil Stadium that warned the Chinese if Barisan Nasional was to lose its two-thirds majority in the 29 November general election, just like on 11 May 1969, then another May 13 may erupt?

Yes, who in heaven’s name is seditious? (I was going to say ‘who the ****’ but changed my mind so that I can keep this piece decent and suitable for minors). Is it I or Umno? I am alleged to have raised racial tension by allowing comments in Malaysia Today’s blogs that may rub some races the wrong way. Me? Me who has Malay, English, Welsh, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, etc., relatives who are Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, atheists, etc? Hey, if there was a medal for being the most ‘global’ family I would be he who is most eligible to receive it. My family is almost like a mini-United Nations. And I have not even started dissecting the ‘Malay’ side of my family into sub-groups such as Bugis, Javanese, Minangkabau, etc.

Hey Umno! Yes, you, Umno! You, who accuse me of being seditious and who should be detained under the ISA. I, Raja Petra Bin Raja Kamarudin, is not only accusing you of being seditious, I am also accusing you, Umno, of being the cause of an unknown number of deaths suffered in the 13 May 1969 race riots. And I make this allegation with God as my witness and the testimony of the First Prime Minister of Malaya/Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Bapa Merdeka, who went to his grave an extremely sad man and who grievingly said he wished he had died and never lived to see the day that Malaysians would murder Malaysians.

Learning the truth about May 13

    The Sun, 27 July 2007

Thank you for your feature on the 1969 riots. This was the first informative article about the event that I have read in my 24 years of life. Never before have I encountered such a revealing account of that episode.

I didn’t get it in primary school, neither in secondary school, nor in university either. And all this while I have studied locally. I think somebody somewhere thought that by not exposing young Malaysians to this chapter of the nation’s past, we would be better off.

But they should realise that history has a tendency to repeat itself. Thank you for printing the truth. Now we all know what really happened and can learn to avoid it.

The May 13 incident as personally related by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the First Prime Minister of Malaya/Malaysia and Bapa Merdeka

At his residence in Penang, 1972

“It was clear to me as well as the police that in the highly charged political atmosphere after the police were forced to kill a Chinese political party worker on May 4th, 1969, something was bound to happen to threaten law and order because of the resentment towards the Government by the KL Chinese on the eve of the general election. This was confirmed at this man’s funeral on the 9th May when the government faced the most hostile crowd it had ever seen.

Therefore, when the opposition parties applied for a police permit for a procession to celebrate their success in the results of the general election, I was adamant against it because the police were convinced that this would lead to trouble. I informed Tun Razak about this and he seemed to agree.

Now, without my knowledge and actually “behind my back”, there were certain political leaders in high positions who were working to force me to step down as a PM. I don’t want to go into details but if they had come to me and said so I would gladly have retired gracefully.

Unfortunately, they were apparently scheming and trying to decide on the best way to force me to resign. The occasion came when the question of the police permit was to be approved.

Tun Razak and Harun Idris, the MB of the state of Selangor, now felt that permission should be given knowing fully well that there was a likelihood of trouble. I suppose they felt that when this happened they could then demand my resignation.

To this day I find it very hard to believe that Razak, whom I had known for so many years, would agree to work against me in this way. Actually, he was in my house as I was preparing to return to Kedah and I overhead him speaking to Harun over the phone saying that he would be willing to approve the permit when I left. I really could not believe what I was hearing and preferred to think it was about some other permit. In any case, as the Deputy Prime Minister in my absence from KL, he would be the Acting PM and would override my objection. Accordingly, when I was in my home in Kedah, I heard over the radio that the permit had been approved.

It seems as though the expected trouble was anticipated and planned for by Harun and his UMNO Youth. After the humiliating insults hurled by the non-Malays, especially the Chinese, and after the seeming loss of Malay political power to them, they were clearly ready for some retaliatory action. After meeting in large numbers at Harun’s official residence in Jalan Raja Muda near Kampong Bahru and hearing inflammatory speeches by Harun and other leaders, they prepared themselves by tying ribbon strips on their foreheads and set out to kill Chinese. The first hapless victims were two of them in a van opposite Harun’s house who were innocently watching the large gathering. Little did they know that they would be killed on the spot.

The rest is history. I am sorry but I must end this discussion now because it really pains me as the Father of Merdeka to have to relive those terrible moments. I have often wondered why God made me live long enough to have witnessed my beloved Malays and Chinese citizens killing each other.”

    Dear PM/DPM

If you think we Indian supported you all this while – it is because we do not want history to repeat itself. Not because we have faith in your government.
