Hindraf legal advisor P Uthayakumar has been warded at the Taiping general hospital today, apparently for dehydration due to his ongoing hunger strike at the Kamunting detention centre. His fiancee S Indra Devi told Malaysiakini that she was informed by detention centre officials that Uthayakumar was warded at about 1pm today.”They said he has been put on a drip. I don’t know much more, I’m on my way to Kamunting now,” said Indra Devi.

In view of the latest developments, Indra Devi had an emotional appeal to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

“I would like to appeal to the prime minister to release Uthayakumar. He is diabetic and needs proper medical care,” she said, in between sobs.

Nationwide hunger strike

Uthayakumar and four other Hindraf leaders have been on hunger strike since Monday, cooinciding with ongoing Thaipusam festivities.

They are protesting their detention without trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for allegedly threatening national security. The four others are M Manoharan, R Kenghadharan, V Ganabatirau and T Vasantha Kumar.

At Gunung Cheroh in Ipoh, at least 112 people have taken part in a similar hunger strike at the Sri Subramaniam Temple to call for the abolishment of the ISA.

Spokesperson for the hunger strikers, S Sivakumar said they carried out their strike in 12-hour shifts since Monday.

Yesterday, 108 started a similar hunger strike at the Sri Subramaniam temple at Port Klang, Selangor. There are also unconfirmed reports of small groups holding similar hunger strikes in various Hindu temples across the country.

Most strikes are scheduled to end between tomorrow and Monday.
