Kayveas accepts Kimma’s decision to merge with PPP

KUALA LUMPUR: People’s Progressive Party (PPP) president Datuk M. Kayveas has accepted in principle the decision by the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) to merge with PPP. “I accept Kimma’s merger decision with an open heart and I have no objection to it. I believe they have made a wise decision as it can strengthen Barisan Nasional (BN) in the run-up to the coming general election,” he said yesterday.

Kimma decided to merge with the PPP at its supreme council meeting yesterday, citing its failure to get a reply on its application to join BN as the reason for the merger. Kayveas said he hoped that with the merger the problems faced by Indian Muslims could be given close attention through the PPP. “I haven’t received a formal decision from Kimma. However, I’m prepared to receive it at anytime,” he added.

Kimma president Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay said the unanimous resolution to join PPP was passed at its supreme council meeting. “We need a channel to voice the problems of Indian Muslims to the highest authority after our application to join BN did not get any reply,” he told reporters after chairing the meeting.

Amir Amsaa said children of Kimma members were recorded as “Indian” in their birth certificates, instead of Indian Muslims like before. He said this had caused problems to school-going children who became confused about their background.

He said that last Friday Kimma supreme council members met PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas to discuss the possibility of merging with PPP. Amir Amsaa said Kimma would hand over the merger resolution to Kayveas in Shah Alam on Feb 23. Kimma is reported to have almost 80,000 members
