Well, looks like creativity streak flows as well for Makkal Sakthi. Anyway, that’s beside the point (or is it the point indeed?). The people are being promised (yet again) of new school and solving the temple problem. Will the people there still trust them?

‘Mystery’ Tamil CD selling like hot cakes

ALOR STAR: There’s a hot new CD making the rounds in Kedah, and it’s proven a little mysterious.
You can pay anything for it — even a measly RM1. It has no jacket, no songlist and the singers are total unknowns. No seller will tell you who recorded this little hit album. But this collection of 10 Tamil songs is all too clear about one thing — wanting change.

The sad melodies may be borrowed from the latest Tamil movie hits, but the “sharp” lyrics sing of local troubles. It’s selling like hot cakes in Kulim, Lunas and Sungai Petani. These are also areas where MIC has just completed door-to-door visits.
“The feedback isn’t all bad,” says Datuk S. Parasuraman, who heads the Padang Serai MIC, home to 13,000 Indian voters. Only small groups are unhappy, much of it because of internal issues, he says.

But pressure on the party has mounted since Hindraf’s Nov 25 rally in Kuala Lumpur and MIC has had to defend its service records, admits [soon to be ex-]state MIC chief Datuk V. Saravanan. “But the people know we’ve worked hard and 90 per cent of the support is still there.”

On complaints by Kampung Sungai Tukang grocer S. Chandran over eviction problems facing the villagers, Saravanan says it is a private matter that has been settled in court. Provisions have been made for villagers, the temple and its Tamil school. “Some took up the offer (made by the land owner). Only a few are protesting.”

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid has also personally looked into the problems in some of the estates. Although Indians form just 6.86 per cent of voters in Kedah, they are concentrated in blocks in several constituencies where there are issues that need tackling.

The state has promised Paya Besar folk who vote in the Lunas state seat a new Tamil school.  They’ve also promised that long-standing efforts to acquire the privately-owned land on which its temple stands will finally see results — nailing two major grouses. [Isn’t this the 3rd election its being promised to be solved?]

Saravanan says communities here were taken in by outsiders who sold them the idea that their needs weren’t being met.
