Media Boycott ends

The media boycott at the parliament ended a day after it was initiated. The barricades were removed by Bung Mokhtar yesterday afternoon, but the media personnel did not enter the restricted areas since there was no official statement from the Parliament office. This action angered Minister Nazri. He said the BN Backbenchers Club (Bung Mokhtar and gang) should have not removed it before the Speaker made official announcement. NST wrote that there is a a silent battle going on between Nazri and the BN BBC.

As reported in Malaysiakini:

Meanwhile Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz lambasted the BN Backbenchers Club (BBC) members who removed the barricades yesterday.

“I do not condone their action. Even though they are from BN, they have no power to do that. Who are they to take down the barricade? It’s a bad example of them,” he said today when contacted by a Star senior journalist.

He further added that the power instead lied on the hands of the speaker and they should wait for the decision to be made.

“It’s the speaker’s power, he’s in charge. It’s unbecoming… don’t think you are a BBC member, you can do what you like, is this a gangsters’ club? They better know where they are placed in the house,” he lamented.

The minister also dismissed the allegations that he was behind the media ban, as reported in Malaysian Insider.

He however gave credit to the opposition for raising the matter in the house yesterday.

The speaker Pandikar Amin, today was not exactly behaving in a humble manner when he said:

I would be seen like a loser if I said the ban is lifted

This joker is more worried about saving face than either (i) admit his mistake or (ii) stick to his guns.

PKR crisis in Selangor

Looks like Khalil manages to find another issue to be embroiled in. He seems to be in the papers for all the wrong reasons nowadays.

Before ACA concluded their inquiry, he announced that his aide is suspended. The guy was not informed prior to the announcement it seems. The aide, Yahya Mat Sahri had quit the post and also as Selangor PKR secretary. I understand that the MB wants to show that there will be fair and unimpeded investigation, but he should have informed the affected party.

Meanwhile, several division heads in Selangor PKR are unhappy that key positions such as councilors were not being given to the party warriors, but instead allocated to professionals.

We are angry that many of our pejuang (party warriors), especially division heads, were not appointed into the government, including as local councillors.
We are not happy as the people we named were not only qualified but were with the party during reformasi (reformation) time and even braved teargas and beatings for the party,

Ministry program to help stateless children

Minister Ng Yen Yen mentioned that her Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is working with Registration Department and state governments to resolve problem of children without “documentation”. She goes on to say that these documents were needed for schooling and medical access. Wonder what are those “documents” because she says it does not include identification cards.

Selangor is mentioned as having a high number of people without proper identification, especially from the Indian community. Figures vary from 20,000 to 80,000 depending on who you ask. Besides Selangor, Sabah also has a very high number of children without identification – usually those with illegal immigrant parents, unlike Selangor where the parents are local Indians without any identifications themselves. Kind of a generation problem.

We hope this program will succeed, instead of being dragged until next election season. However, its wiser and most likely cost effective to tackle identification card and citizenship issue at the same time. No point in having another round of exercise to investigate, document and solve identification card problem. The Registration Department should be able to decide on giving birth certificate and/or identity cards based on data collected by the ministry workers, NGOs, state government staff etc.

Before election, this stateless people topic was a hot issue in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Malacca as there were cases of estate workers who for generation were without any proper identification. Coupled with total illiteracy, these people were perfect for cheap labor in estates and farm located in remote areas.

did or did not?

Hmm..yesterday was quite interesting. RPK gave a statutory declaration that included statement saying PM Badawi received a report from military intelligence. But Badawi denied it.

Then, if you remember the indelible ink issue during the last election, the Election Comission’s chairman Abdul Rashid said that it was the Cabinet decision that “instructed” him to not use the inks (bought for RM2 million – can purchase land and build one Tamil school!) just days before the election. If I’m not mistaken the chairman implicated PM Badawi as well. In yesterday’s Parliament session, PM gave a written reply to Lim Guan Eng’s question. According to the reply, the Cabinet only “suggested” and the decision was still with the commission.

So, who is lying and who is not?

While we were amused and maybe horrified over the directive issued by Kota Bahru Municipal Council, those guys clarified that its just a confusion over a circular and brochure on dress codes for Muslims women which was sent out to local businesses.  The MPKB PR officer said its part of an “awareness campaign”.

The brochure is just a part of a campaign to explain to Muslim women the dress codes according to Islam which forbid the use of lipsticks and high-heel shoes.

However, if they (do not comply with this) dress code, MPKB has no right to take action
