It was a Green day celebration, organised by The Star yesterday at FRIM, Kepong. We went there at about 9am hoping to take part in the canopy walk or the treasure hunt. The weather was cloudy and breezy as well, so it a was smooth and pleasant drive to Kepong (well, Sunday mornings are always a good time to try the highways :)).
Parking as bit of a hassle even at 9am, but we managed to squeeze out a space near the chinese shops, just before the FRIM guard house. Then, we took a ride on the free van service to the activities area. The crowd was not much, probably about 300 – 400 people only. Most come with families.
We went to to booth first, thinking that can finish that area and come back to join the treasure hunt or canopy walk later. We hit The Star's booth first and collect the free plant. Next was Nokia's booth where we submitted a postcard of pledge. This was followed by a visit to a booth promoting biodegradable food containers made from oil palm fruit (see photo below). Next to them was a booth promoting portable solar powered charger, suitable for handphones and other small electronic devices. The chargers come in a variety of bright color and cost RM499 (imported from Switzerland!) (see photo below).
After that, we passed by The Star Youths booths which had bottle cap painting, body/face painting, popcorn selling etc. We stopped by MNS' booth which had a game on the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
At the end of the row of booths was a section for the Orang Asli. They put up a nice dance (see photos below) for early birds even though it was still early, and they were waiting for their things to arrive.
We turned back and were attracted to all those sounds coming from the Star Youth booths. The Drum Circle was in action! a group of kompang wielding boys were joined by the teenagers holding all kinds of musical instruments, some made from recycled/reused items. They were making a cacophony of sound, each immersed in their own creativity. The end result was a terrific feet-stomping blend of music (see photos below). We spend a good twenty minutes there, enjoying ourselves with the music and antics of the musicians. In fact, we did not notice that the time was already 11.30am, and we missed both the treasure hunt and the canopy walk!
Since there was nothing much to do, we decided to walk back to the car park instead of taking the van. At least we had a chance to enjoy the green, cool, refreshing and clean environment at FRIM. The crowd had increased to about 1000 people. Probably the cloudy weather encouraged more to join the activities. On the way down, we took photos of some tree formations and also scenery at the pond (see photos below). We left FRIM at 12.30pm.
FRIM does have many attractions, and I'm sure most of us will be going back to explore it further in the future.
