As reported in Malaysiakini, one of the four Hindraf supporters detained at KLCC on Sunday was put together with few other men in the same detention cell in Dang Wangi police station. They were detained after handing out leaflets during the CPA conference.

Police tried to disperse the group resulting in the four – S Jayathas, S Poobalan, K Balakrishnan and B Susila – being arrested.

“They were given 20 seconds to disperse before they were ambushed while leafleting in the rain,” said Surendran when met at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters later.

According to Hindraf lawyer N.Surendran, Susila, 41, was being held in a police lockup with seven other unknown men.

“This is unacceptable. Was she treated this way because she is affiliated with Hindraf?” he asked.

Teluk Intan MP Manogaran told reporters later that Zulkarnain had confirmed that Susila was held in a cell with men but a woman police officer was stationed outside the cell.

Manogaran also said they were assured of Susila’s safety by Zulkarnain. The police chief however refused to comment on Susila’s detention when approached by reporters.

The Star did not mention this gross misconduct in its article. It just said that the four were released at 6.30pm, about 2 hours after being arrested. Even though it was for a short period, its still unacceptable. More so in current circumstances where such actions can be seen as discriminatory against the Indian community.

On one side, there’s condemnation of the Bar Council organised forum on conversion, but at MCCBCHST’s dinner yesterday, Prime Minister Badawi sang a different tune. He says that more interfaith dialogues should be held to ensure continuous harmony among Malaysians of different religions. He would ask Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal to continue having such dialogues.

“I will tell Shafie to do what is good and have such meetings as regularly as he can. At some of these meetings, I plan to sit in, too,” he said at the silver jubilee dinner of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism.

Abdullah assured those present that what he said was not merely a ploy to pacify and please non-Muslims.

“I understand your concerns and try to do whatever I can to find solutions to issues involving non-Muslims. We are brothers and sisters who must work together and continue practising tolerance and patience as a way forward for this nation.”

Abdullah said non-Muslims, however, must understand and respect that matters relating to the aqidah (faith) of Islam could neither be “touched” nor “changed”. But he assured non-Muslims that
they would be treated fairly and justly as required by the Quran and Allah. “When we are friends, between Muslims and the non-Muslims, it is easy to work things out.”

Abdullah said he had been entrusted with the responsibility of looking after the affairs of all Malaysians. “For me, justice for all is the most important thing. It is the command of Allah to be trustworthy in executing my duties. The people have trusted me and expect me to deliver. “I am here to assure you that all are protected and can enjoy living in Malaysia as Malaysians.”

Earlier, the council’s president, Datuk A. Vaithilingam, said members had discovered that by sitting together and talking through interfaith differences, potential flashpoints and major problems could be avoided and disputes settled peacefully and amicably. However, he claimed many non-Muslims felt marginalised in today’s Malaysia.

Well, can’t blame him. Politicians have to say things according to the situation. We can’t trust them.

Murugiah says teacher to be transferred but parents unhappy

I got to know that Deputy Minister in PM’s Dept, Murugiah was at the school yesterday along with angry and unhappy parents. Never heard anything from the sole guardian of the Indian community our beloved Samy Vellu. Maybe he has more pressing concerns involving RM70 million.

As expected, the teacher (I have got the name, Rusitah Abu Hassan, and photo, but unauthenticated) has “apologised” and Murugiah says the teacher will be transferred. He said disciplinary action will be recommended, but I think after a week it will be all quiet.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator T. Murugiah accompanied by few of his Public Complaints Bureau staff, who visited SMK Telok Panglima Garang yesterday, said the teacher regretted the incident and had apologised to the students. He said the issue was now considered closed and advised members of the Indian community
as well as parents of the affected students to accept the teacher’s apology.

She also said that she did not expect things to become so serious and has agreed to be transferred to another school.

It is still unknown if his head was working well when he was at the school. This is because the community is fuming and this deputy minister tries to sweep the mess under the carpet.

The Star reports that relatives of the affected students as well as the members of the Telok Panglima Garang Indian community refused to regard the matter as closed.

“She must make a public apology as she insulted all Indians and be transferred to a desk job and not
allowed to teach anymore,” said the group’s spokesman S. Muthamil Selvan.

Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George concurred and said his organisation was preparing a memorandum on the matter to be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

As I mentioned earlier, legal action must be taken. We can’t trust the discplinary action nor the teacher’s apology. So far, no lawyer had come forward yet. Let’s see if there are only cowards in these political parties. If the parents want to go ahead, I’m confident that many people will contribute financially to support their legal action. Let this be a warning to all those who serve to “disrupt national unity and harmony” – as our ministers so fondly like to say. Or does it apply to certain groups only?

If you check the school’s website, under sesi pagi, there are 3 Indian teachers listed (Cik Vijayavaney A/P W.V. Richard, Pn Gunadevi A/P Rajadurai, En Nadarajan A/L Thambu). Nadarajan teaches Moral, so perhaps he can give his views. Hopefully all of them will give some comments. Btw, the violent racist teacher’s name is also there I believe.

Malaysiakini report on teacher who insulted and beat Indian students

This time Star and NST beat Malaysiakini to the news. The story on teacher who beat and insulted Indians only appeared today at 2pm, while NST and Star versions appeared much earlier.

Some of the article is reproduced below:

Two police reports have been lodged against a secondary school History teacher for allegedly uttering racial slurs against Indian students. The reports, lodged by two students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang last Friday, stated that a female history teacher had allegedly called Indian students ‘keling pariah’, ‘Negro’ and ‘black monkeys’, amongst other derogatory names.

In the report, the Form Four and Form Five student said the teacher purportedly told students during class that ‘Indians came from dogs’, Indians are ‘children of prostitutes’ and the community is stupid. They also allege that teacher had said the community youth ‘did not have testicles’, ‘always menstruates’ and indulged in thuggery and theft.

The teacher in the Hulu Langat school had also purportedly beaten some Indian students and punished them with push ups if they were late for class. The Form Four student in his report said students were “ashamed and embarrassed” by these incidents.

“She told the Indian students to stand up and said she wanted to test how we would react to the word ‘keling pariah’. “We said we did not like it and she raised her voice and repeatedly called us ‘keling pariah’ and wrote the words on the blackboard,” his report stated.

Meanwhile, the school when contacted, said they were not permitted to give a statement as the matter is currently being investigated by the police.

Its headmaster Nordin Bin Saad is on leave and was not available for comment.

Tamil dailies today reported that about 1,000 angry parents and members of the public gathered at the school yesterday to show their anger against the teacher.

teacher stomped on students backs

The Star’s initial online version of the teacher insulting Indian community was very revealing – with quotes on the exact words used by the teacher published. However, in today’s online and print version, a more sanitized version appears. I reproduce both for comparison:

Initial Online Version (yesterday) (alternative link here):

About 500 angry parents and other members of the Indian community gathered outside a secondary school here on Monday to protest racial slurs and abuse allegedly uttered by a teacher against Indian students recently.

The crowd began gathering outside SMK Telok Panglima Garang’s main entrance near here at noon and dispersed about two hours later.

The headmaster was on leave, so some teachers accepted on his behalf copies of police reports made by a Form Four student and a Form Five student. According to the police reports, the female history teacher had allegedly called Indian students in a Form Four and a Form Five class ‘keling pariah’, ‘Negro’, ‘black monkeys’ as well as other
derogatory names.

The teacher had also purportedly said that ‘Indians came from dogs’ and the community members were stupid and prone to thuggery and thievery.

The police reports also alleged that the teacher had said that Indians were the ‘children of prostitutes’ and the community’s youths ‘did not have testicles’ on July 17 and 22, and had also purportedly beaten up some Indians students.

The Form Four student also alleged in his report that the teacher had written the word ‘keling pariah’ on the board and lost her cool when the Indian students in the class told her that they did not like being called names.

Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George, who was among those who handed over the police reports, said that exposure to such abuse would only breed hatred and racial polarisation in schools.

“No one in his or her right frame of mind would have said these things. Given this, the best option would be for the teacher to be assigned to a desk job and not be allowed to be near youngsters anymore,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said the schoolteacher might be sacked if the allegations proved true.

The allegations were serious as no one was allowed to insult others, especially in a school environment, said Dr Wee, who was asked to comment on the incident when visiting a nine-year-old accident victim at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru.

He added that the ministry was awaiting an official report before taking any action.

Today’s print and online version:

BANTING: About 500 angry parents and other members of the Indian community gathered outside a secondary school here yesterday to stage a protest over racial slurs and abuse allegedly uttered by a teacher against Indian students recently.

The crowd began gathering outside SMK Telok Panglima Garang’s main entrance near here from noon and dispersed about two hours later.

The headmaster was on leave so some teachers accepted on his behalf copies of the police reports made by a Form Four student and a Form Five student.

The police reports also alleged that the teacher had beaten some students.

Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George, who was among those who handed over the police reports, said that such abuse would only result in breeding hatred and racial polarisation in schools.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said the teacher might be sacked if the allegations were proven true.

The allegations were serious as no one was allowed to insult others especially in school environment, said Dr Wee, who was asked to comment on the incident while visiting a nine-year-old accident victim at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru.

He added that the ministry was awaiting an official report.

Meanwhile, NST also have picked up the story:

The Education Ministry has ordered an investigation into allegations that a teacher in Klang made racist remarks at her students.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said if the allegations were true, action would be taken against the teacher. “It is not proper for educationists to treat their students differently according to their race and to speak to them in such a manner,” he said.

The teacher at SMK Panglima Garang in Klang was alleged to have used racial slurs and verbally abused several students here last month.

The abuses allegedly happened on separate occasions in two classes. Upset by the incidents, the students sent a complaint note to the headmaster but claimed no action was taken.

In the first incident on July 17, the teacher allegedly entered a Form Five class and apart from calling them a derogatory word, also accused them of being gangsters and thieves.

The teacher was also alleged to have ordered the boys to do push-ups. When some of them could not do it, she allegedly stamped on their backs.

The second incident allegedly happened five days later in a Form Four class where she taught history. She told the students that she “wanted to test their level of patience” and began abusing them with derogatory words. She even wrote the words on the blackboard.

Two students lodged police reports against the teacher. The situation turned tense yesterday when about 500 parents and members of the public gathered in front of the school. Holding placards, they demanded that the students be treated fairly and that action be taken against the teacher.

A delegation of five parents then met the school’s senior assistant. The headmaster was not present while the teacher concerned was said to be on medical leave.

A member of the delegation said the matter had been referred to the Education Department for further action.

Stomped on their backs? Wow…that is beyond words already. We may have an extremist who is threat to national unity. After a thorough psychiatric evaluation, the person should be locked away for a long long time.

Wee Ka Siong is left to handle this. Where is Education Minister Hishamuddin?
