MIC-run education institute to take loan defaulters to court
By A. LETCHUMANAN

KUALA LUMPUR: The MIC-run Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) will take court action to recover RM30mil (US$8.6mil)owed by 5,500 loan defaulters.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the MIED would send the legal notices to the defaulters who had already completed their studies.

“If they ignore the notices or fail to pay up, we would haul them to court to reclaim the money,” he told reporters after chairing the party’s central working committee meeting here on Tuesday.

He said MIED had already disbursed RM64mil (US$18.4mil) to over 13,000 students but only 9,000 of them could be traced.

Samy Vellu said 800 students who had also taken the educational loans, had already paid up RM11mil (US$3.2mil).

“There are another 3,500 students who are currently pursuing their studies and had obtained RM23mil (US$6.6mil),” he said.

He said about 3,000 students are expected to submit their applications for RM10mil (US$2.9mil) in educational loans this year but the MIED does not have the money.

“If we able to collect the money from the loan defaulters, it would be used to give out loans to other deserving students,” he said.

plus RM6 million for 2 schools – SJK (Tamil) San Peng and SJK (Tamil) Sentul!!! That's 3 million per school, far more than any amount given out in recent times. When some money were allocated few years back, it was divided between 10 schools, amounting to few hundred thousand per school only.

KUALA LUMPUR: S. Kabeenesh was a picture of concentration in front of the computer monitor.

After two years of sharing 10 old computers with schoolmates, the Year Six pupil from SJK (Tamil) Kampung Pandan was excited to finally get to use a new one.

"It feels good because I now have more access to the Internet and can learn new computer skills," he said.

Ten new Pentium computers were donated to the school.

The donation was part of a community service project entitled "Enhancing Literacy In Our Children" by the Rotary Club of Pudu here to help underprivileged youths in the school.
Club president K. Rajah said computer knowledge was important for the students’ future.

The RM32,000 donation also included a television, DVD player, two bookshelves, two printers and books for the school library.

Education Ministry parliamentary secretary P. Komala Devi, who launched the project, said the contribution was greatly appreciated as only 20 per cent of 523 Tamil schools nationwide were fully aided.

She also announced that RM6 million had been allocated to SJK (Tamil) San Peng and SJK (Tamil) Sentul for renovations.

Auntie Kopitiam

We stopped at this kopitiam during lunch break of education seminar. It is located in the same row of the old Kuala Selangor bus station.

The place was quiet, and since we wanted to have a quick bite ASAP, this shop seemed to a good choice. Service was ok, food seemed nice. My roti bakar was better than the roti steam. The laksa came an big bowl (as you see from the picture). Nasi lemak ayam was ok i guess, since both of them never said much.

But, what really surprised me was my TEH HALIA. There were pieces of halia (ginger) in it!!! How real can you get?

Price was a bit high considering Kuala Selangor is not exactly a popular destination. I guess the name kopitiam has its own price.

Schools with few pupils used to merge

VERNACULAR schools with low enrolments in Negri Sembilan have been told to merge for the benefit of pupils.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said it was pointless to continue operating such schools as they could not get the best in terms of facilities or teachers.

“Let me make it clear first that this is my personal opinion. If you want the best for your children, you must be prepared to swallow your pride,” he said.

The best: Mohamad presenting the best managed PTA award to Tunku Kurshiah College PTA committee member Dr Mohamad Sallehin Abu Bakar in Port Dickson.

Citing an example, he said there were 15 Tamil schools in Jempol alone which had less than 100 pupils each.

“I personally feel that these should be reduced to five or six,” he said, adding that it was also difficult for the Education Ministry to send a complete set of teachers to such schools especially when there was a short-age.

However, he said, there were attempts from the Chinese community to merge and relocate schools with low enrolments.

Mohamad said there were instances where students from some vernacular schools were unable to read or write upon entering Form 1.

“This is happening and it is sad. Since these vernacular are feeder schools, they eventually affect the academic performance of the secondary schools they eventually go to,” he said, adding that he had conveyed this to representatives from political parties and associations in the state.

Mohamad was speaking to reporters after presenting prizes to schools with the best managed Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) in the state.
