Here’s a link to Malaysiakini’s video, taken by Indrani Kopal. I quote their caution:

Due to the distressing nature of the following material, viewer discretion is strongly advised.

For those without access to Malaysiakini video, can download the clip in MP4 format by clicking here. You can useVideoLan VLC media player to view it.

Below is a slideshow of the photos at the Serdang Hospital.

There’s some photos at YB Manikavasagam’s website as well.

Unverified sources said that Samy Vellu was busy answering calls regarding this death while he was at the SJKT Vallambrosa school. It seems that among the suspects who tortured the detainee was a Indian inspector. Not sure on how valid this information is.

Meanwhile, the family of deceased lodged a police report and denied saying that the deceased was an asthmatic patient.  Some representatives from DAP, PKR, MIC and Makkal Sakthi were present there as well offering their support. MK reported that about 80 people were present at the Seri Kembangan police station, venting their anger ath the police.

They held up banners with pictures of the deceased, showing the injuries he sustained while in police custody.

The banners read: “police are licensed killers”, “police are killing Indians” and “police are thirsty for Indian blood” in Malay and English. They also briefly chanted slogans.

Talking to reporters later, Kugan’s family members said that the deceased did not suffer from asthma and could not have died from breathing difficulties, as claimed by the police.

Makkal Sakthi asks Obama to close Kamunting

This is just a symbolic move by Makkal Sakthi. But what caught my attention was their tactic to just have four people gather to hold a banner, meaning there’s no need to apply for a police permit. Smart fellas.

And guess what,  there were 100 policemen there!!! How nice if these guys were deployed in crime infested areas in such short time. Sure can catch some criminals.

By the way, their rep in New York is also expected to pass a petition to Barack Obama

The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) has sought the help of US president-elect Barack Obama to close the Kamunting detention camp in Taiping, Perak.

MCPX

Four Hindraf members made the plea in a press statement issued today, saying that the movement welcomes Obama’s decision to close the camp for suspected militants in Guantanamo Bay.

The four held up a banner outside the US Embassy in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, in a 15-minute demonstration this morning.

The assembled police force of about 100 personnel was surprised at the ‘small’ turnout. However, this was Hindraf’s bid to get around the restriction on gatherings of more than four people, which require a police permit.

In the statement signed by S Jayathas, Hindraf also congratulated Obama on his inauguration – scheduled for 1am tomorrow, Malaysian time.

Hindraf – banned by the government on Oct 15 last year – also said it counts on his support to help Indian Malaysians who “are being suppressed by the Umno-led government”.

R Shan, the movement’s representative in New York, is expected to hand over a petition to Obama in Washington today.

A similar petition will be submitted to Najib Abdul Razak when he becomes the prime minister of Malaysia in March.

    Showdown in India

This Bernama article appeared in both Star and NST. I liked the title. Sounds like a movie title ( remember Showdown in Little Tokyo, Big Trouble in Little China, or Rumble in the Bronx?)

Rumours are abound that a new party to represent Indian may be proposed especially with HINDRAF as the backbone. Also, Manikavasagam said that there will be discussion on efforts to release the ISA detainees.

Whatever it is, we can be assured that all those going will pull out all stops to gain maximum coverage in newspapers. They will try to gain as much airtime as possible.

    Malaysian Indian ‘showdown’ in Chennai
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Indian political leaders from both sides of the country’s political divide are heading to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in India this week to attend a conference which is likely to be an explosive affair.

Malaysian Indian political leaders from the MIC, DAP and PKR are heading for the southern Indian city to attend the three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, better known as the Indian Diaspora Conference, starting Wednesday at the Chennai Trade Centre.

The event will also be attended by representatives of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu will lead a 150-member delegation comprising top brass and divisional leaders of the Barisan Nasional component party.

“We would first attend the World Tamil Conference on Jan 6, also in Chennai. The next day would be the Pravasi. We would attend that too before flying back on Jan 10,” he told Bernama.

The DAP would send a 20-member delegation, led by Penang Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy.

This is the first time in the conference’s history that Malaysian opposition parties are attending the Pravasi held in a state where the majority of Malaysian Indians originated from.

Ramasamy’s delegation, it was reported, would consist of Perak state executive councillor A. Sivanesan and Selangor state executive councillor Xavier Jayakumar.

PKR, meanwhile, would be sending a 40-member delegation.

Kapar Member of Parliament S. Manikavasagam, who recently created a controversy by threatening to quit the opposition party, said the delegation would comprise politicians and businessmen.

A check on the Pravasi website revealed that Malaysia would have four speakers: Samy Vellu, Ramasamy, Malaysian Human Rights (Suhakam) Commissioner Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria and Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also the MIC secretary general.

After each speaker has delivered his address, the floor would be given at least 15 minutes to seek explanations from the speaker, and this is where trouble is expected.

An opposition leader who declined to be named said the opposition delegation was expected to question MIC leaders on the state of affairs of Indians in the country since the party was from the Barisan Nasional, the ruling coalition.

“Well, we have an opportunity to question them directly. We do not have the opportunity here, so I feel they would take whatever chance they have to question the MIC leaders,” he said.

To top it all, Hindraf chief P. Wathyamoorthy, who is now living in a self-imposed exile in London, is expected to attend the event with several supporters from Malaysia. — Bernama

    HINDRAF wins SUARAM award

    December 30th, 2008

An old news, but still worth mentioning:

The now-banned Hindu Right Action Force (Hindraf) and Penan activists of the Ulu Baram area in Sarawak have won Suaram’s 2008 Human Rights Award.

The annual award, presented since 1999, was given to the two rights groups for their unique achievements in highlighting concerns of their communities.

Civil society movement Hindraf was recognised for being able to “captivate, mobilise and empower vast numbers of Malaysians of Indian origin” within a short period of its existence, said Xavier.

She said the judges were “impressed by the way Hindraf contextualised the current situation by bringing in colonial history and demonstrating how, even after 50 years of Merdeka (independence), the Indian community has continued to be marginalised and disenfranchised”.

“The success of Hindraf can perhaps be seen in the fear it has caused the government, to the extent that it detained five of its leaders under the ISA and outlawed the organisation.”

Accepting the award, the movement’s national coordinator RS Thanenthiran (left) said it was an honour for all marginalised communities and noted that the struggle has been recognised for the first time.

“This shows that the banning of Hindraf does not make any sense because the spirit and the struggle are continuing. We the civil society… who are all fighting for human rights have shown that a lot of changes have to be made to the system,” he said.

“You (the government) cannot control the people with ISA… they are now bolder and braver to tell the government that it is violating human rights.”

The award comprises a trophy, a certificate and prize money of RM1,000.
