DAP organised Run for Freedom kicked off at Pandamaran stadium, Klang today. Anil Netto has the tentative schedule of the run. Meanwhile, the only report so far is from Malaysiakini. Reproduced below with photos:

DAP’s anti-ISA marathon began its 350km journey to the Kamunting Detention Camp in Pandamaran, Selangor, this morning with several party personalities kicking the event off.

Party vice-chairperson and former Internal Security Act detainee Tan Kok Wai flagged off the low-key event at the Pandamaran new village at 8.15am with a short speech.

“We call upon the government to immediately and unconditionally release all detainees held under the ISA,” he told a crowd of about 50 party supporters.

Tan said the purpose of the event, dubbed the ‘freedom run’, was also to call for a lift of the ban on the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), adding that it symbolises equality, freedom and a call to all Malaysians to unite in order to “move forward”.

The DAP event was given a boost with the presence of popular blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and his wife Marina Lee Abdullah. Raja Petra has been detained twice under the ISA.

The wife of Hindraf legal advisor V Ganabatirau, V Buvaneswary, was also present during the flag off. Ganabatirau and four other Hindraf leaders have been in detention in Kamunting since Dec 13 last year.

‘Run will be bear fruit’

Other personalities at the event included DAP advisor Dr Chen Man Hin and Selangor state executive councilor Ronnie Liu, who was the first runner at the event.

“It was an honour to be the first,” said Liu, who headed towards Bukit Tinggi, where the flag was passed to an awaiting runner at the service centre of Klang MP Charles Santiago.

Liu told Malaysiakini he had high hopes that the objective of the run would be accomplished as similar runs in the past had been successful.

This includes DAP’s campaign to save Bukit Cina, Malacca from development and SRJK(C) Damansara primary school from permanent closure.

Also lending their support were Pakatan Rakyat coalition partners PAS and PKR. Elected representatives from these two parties will be joining in the run when the flag passes through their constituencies.

Two Pakatan MP’s who have confirmed their participation are S Manikavasagam (PKR-Kapar) and
Dzulkefly Ahmad (PAS-Kuala Selangor).

End in Kamunting

If all goes to plan, the anti-ISA flag would pass through hundred of hands in the coastal towns of Kapar, Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan today, before ending up in Sabak Bernam, which borders Perak, by this evening.

The flag would be passing through Teluk Intan, Setiawan, Pantai Remis, Simpang and Taiping before finally reaching Kamunting.

About a dozen plainclothed police officers kept a close watch at the proceedings at the Pandamaran new village this morning while riot police were on standby in a nearby police station.

Commenting on the police presence, Manikavasagam said there was an overwhelming number of police personnel at his service centre in Kapar.

There were so many of them. Even the Klang OCPD and his deputy were here, he told Malaysiakini.

Manikavasagam said the police disallowed more than five persons from running at the same time and asked several individuals to remove button badges with
the ‘Hindraf’ on it.

I’m disappointed because the police did not allow more than five people to run with their elected rep, he said.

He added that the turnout at Kapar was large and multiracial, adding that the large numbers may have attracted the attention of the police.

November 14th, 2008

RE: REMEMBERING MALAYSIAN UNITY DAY NOVEMBER 25TH

HINDRAF calls for nationwide prayers to be organised to commemorate the 1st year anniversary of UNITY amongst the marginalized, oppressed and suppressed Malaysian Indians over the last 51 years.

November 25th is a day no ethnic Indian in Malaysia would ever choose to forget for it reminds them of the struggle of these marginalized community against the state which came hard to suppress the legitimate voice of democracy. No Indian would forget the fact that a peaceful gathering correctly exercised under Article 10 of the Malaysian Federal Constitution and Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 was met by state violence and aggression.

We call upon all Malaysian Indians to organise prayers in their respective Temples and light up 18 Ghee Lamps each to signify the 18 demands submitted to the Prime Minister on 12th August 2007.

The purpose of this exercise is lessen the evils that is partaking in the current scenario in Malaysia and gain faith and confidence from the almighty to overcome these evils and move forward for the goodwill of the Malaysian people in fairness to all irrespective of their color, race, religion, creed or following.

The burning of these lamps is similar to a candlelight practiced throughout ancient time and it is not sacrilegious to anyone as it seeks the omnipresent power of the almighty to strengthen and boost our faith and confidence for the spiritual and moral path that we have embarked and overcome turbulence time to lessen the evils that are prevailing for the Malaysian society.

Kindly take note that mass prayers would be organised at the Batu Caves Temple for the southern region and Butterworth Mariamman Temple for the Northern Region on the 25th November 2008.

We invite all those who are unable to attend these temples to organise prayers at their respective temples. Though HINDRAF has been unlawfully declared illegal there is nothing the UMNO regime could do to stop us from organising prayers.  We welcome our fellow brothers from other faiths to organise similar prayers at their respective places of worships and seek the divine blessings for the continued struggle and success in our endeavour.

Let us unite on this day and show our oppressors we are UNITED MALAYSIAN INDIANS.

We invite all our supporters to send SMS’s to their friends to attend these prayers and be united on this day by wearing orange clothing as a mark of our unity.

P.Waytha Moorthy

Chairman

HINDRAF

14th November 2008

As I wrote earlier, Batu Caves could be one of the venues to celebrate the anniversary, for example, by conducting a prayer. And that’s what being proposed by HINDRAF. It doesn’t take a genius to propose such an idea.

So, Tuesday evening at Batu Caves. Have to leave early to avoid the traffic jam. Anyhow, for those worried of police violence, HINDRAF’s Waytha suggests that people organise such prayers at their own locations – be it  a church, gurdwara, temple or mosque.

Wearing orange? MIC Putera fellas wore orange today, but nothing happened!

This action by the Royal Police Force of Malaysia is nothing but harassment and intimidation of our right as citizens of Malaysia. We as Malaysian citizens have a   right to go to Parliment. What is so wrong in going to Parliament to provide evidence of the lies by the Malaysian Home Minister. Malaysia is degenerating into the darkness of Political Autocracy. SHAME ON THE UMNO REGIME  THAT PREVENTS ITS CITIZENS TO GO TO PARLIAMENT. THE POLICE ARE USED AS UMNO’s TOOL TO SUPPRESS DEMOCRACY.

The following is reported by NST:

Former coordinator of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) R.S. Thananthiran was summoned by the police today over a commotion in Parliament on Oct 22.

Besides Thananthiran, Police Watch Malaysia member S. Jayathas was also seen entering the Sentul police headquarters at 10.15am. They left about two hours later.

Sentul police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan said later that police had recorded statements from the two individuals.

Thananthiran told reporters: “Both of us were asked some 20 questions on the handover of a memorandum on Oct 22 but we only anwered a few because it is our right not to answer. We are only ordinary citizens.

“Why were we called to give evidence when we only went to Parliament that day to hand over a memorandum? Nevertheless, we thank the police for their professional conduct today,” he said.
He also said members of Parliament for Kapar S. Manikavasagam and Teluk Intan Dr M. Manogaran had been summoned to give statements over the same incident tomorrow.

I feel Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar should also be called to give evidence since there are over 40 police reports lodged against him nationwide over his inaccurate remarks about Hindraf,” Thananthiran said.

Run Makkal Run

Odinan, odinan, ellaiyai thandiye odinan (He ran, he ran, until over the boundary he ran) – a well-known dialogue in Tamil comes to my mind.

Well, DAP is taking the fight/campaign to free HINDRAF 5 ISa detainees to a different level. Its organising a Run for Freedom activity which involves a distance of 350km! Yup, all the way from Klang to the gates of Kamunting detention center. Many Pakatan Rakyat MPs and ADUNs will be running in order to get some airtime and publicity as well. It will be like the Olympic torch run, where only one person will be running at a time and will pass the “torch” (in this case a special flag) to the next runner.

I Wonder how the police going to stop this activity. Easiest is to claim “no permit”.

The organisers are looking for 5000 people to participate. So, those who are concerned about the HINDRAF 5 and oppose ISA can show their support by taking part in the run.

DAP Selangor has found a novel way to increase awareness on the continued detention of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders and to add pressure on the government to free them.

The party is organising a run – dubbed the ‘Makkal Sakhti 5 Freedom Run’ – over the weekend (Nov15-16).

Organising chairperson Dr Wong Ang Peng said he expects some 5,000 people to participate in the 350km run, which will kick off in Klang and end at the gates of the Kamunting Detention Centre in Perak.

He said there will also be a ‘special flag’ which will be passed from one runner to another during the entire journey. The last runner will hand the flag as well as ‘three larger banners’ to Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming in Kamunting.

DAP Selangor will also canvass for signatures from the public in support of the cause.

Later in the night, an anti-ISA candlelight vigil will be held to call for the release of the five and protest against the Internal Security Act.

Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai will be the first runner when things get off the ground at 8am on Saturday in Klang. The run will be suspended at 7pm in Sabak Bernam and will resume the next morning.

Meanwhile, various Pakatan Rakyat leaders are expected to take part in the run. PKR’s Manikavasagam will run through his Kapar parliamentary constituency as will PAS’ Dzulkefly Ahmad through his Kuala Selangor seat.

Also figuring in the run will be DAP Selangor chairperson and Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah, Puchong MP Gobind Singh, Selangor exco Ronnie Liu, Klang MP Charles Santiago and Selangor state speaker Teng Chang Khim.

Controversial blogger and just released ISA detainee Raja Petra Kamaruddin will be present at the start of the run in Klang.

The freedom run will pass through Kapar, Kuala Selangor, Sekinchan, Sg Besar, Hutan Melintang, Setiawan, Pantai Remis, Simpang and Taiping before reaching Kamunting.

“Traffic will not be obstructed as there will only be one runner at a time on the road,” explained Wong.

Those interested in participating can contact Dr Wong at 012-6644432.

HINDRAF also rebranding?

Looks like HINDRAF has been forced to rebrand as well. Since it has been branded as illegal organisation, they have to look at the alternatives. Malaysiakini seems to be the only one publishing any news on HINDRAF now. The article mentions the possibilities – either branch out into other civil rights movements or start a political party.

Interestingly, the idea of joining Pakatan seemed to be put on the backburner for a while. Perhaps HINDRAF realises that being neutral is better, Pakatan is not trustable, or Pakatan rejected them (due to some restrictions or demands made by either party). The makkal may also won’t like the idea of HINDRAF joining Pakatan. I also don’t think HINDRAF should be allowed into Pakatan because they will be consisting of members of certain race only, which will automatically imply raced-based politics. Even though one can argue that HINDRAF fights for all Malaysian, the perception of the membership is one of race-based party. Same reason I don’t agree to PAS joining Pakatan (membership limited to religious affliation). Solution – HINDRAF change name and opens membership to all.

The banned Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) is planning to branch out into other civil rights movements to strengthen their struggle and make it difficult for the government to pin them down. Its activists are also mulling the formation of a political party to further champion the cause of disgruntled ethnic Indians in the country.

The Home Ministry’s ban on Hindraf last October has changed the mindset of the movement’s leaders, and they are now open to the idea of exploring other options to spearhead their cause.

Prior to the ban, they said activists were confined to Hindraf, making it easy for the authorities to nail them down.

“It forced us to explore other ways and means to continue our fight for justice, equality and freedom for all Malaysians,” former Hindraf leader RS Thanenthiran (right) told Malaysiakini in Penang last night.

Although former Hindraf leaders had earlier considered joining component parties in Pakatan Rakyat, they have now concluded that having their own non-government organisations and political entities would be more effective.

“We can join Pakatan if we want to, on our own terms,”said Hindraf Perak co-ordinator A Vethamurthy

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has claimed that Hindraf advocated ‘extremism’ to justify his ministry’s ban on the human rights movement, which shot to prominency when it filed a suit against the British government, Malaysian former colonial masters, early last year.

Hindraf leaders also believe that the government ban on their movement has stopped several splinter groups, allegedly sponsored by Indian parties linked to the governing Barisan Nasional, from calling themselves the ‘true’ champions of the Indian cause.

London based Hindraf self-exiled leader P Waythamoorthy went as far as declaring that the “ban is a blessing in disguise”.

Penang Hindraf deputy chairperson S Sanjay Ram said the ban had eliminated the confusion caused by these so-called bogus groups and made it clear to Malaysian Indians that only those who supported Waythamoorthy and his detained brother Uthayakumar were ‘genuine’ Hindraf activists.

Sanjay Ram is also optimistic that by splitting Hindraf into several inter-linked civil and political movements, the group can re-emerge as a more powerful movement and attract more support.

“A Hindraf based political party would break up support base of BN Indian parties,” he said.

Since Hindraf activists revealed their intention to join Pakatan partners, it is learnt a delegation from the parliamentary opposition pact had held a private discussion with Waythamoorthy in London a few days ago.

Waythamoorthy has declined to provide details of the said meeting, but confirmed that Pakatan leaders have been in contact with him over the issue.

However, local Hindraf leaders are confident that Waythamoorthy would not make a political deal with Pakatan at the expense of Hindraf and Indian interests.

“He will not shirk his responsibility to the Indian community,” said Thanenthiran of Waythamoorty, who is expected to make a announcement in a week’s time on Hindraf next move.

We have to wait till next week to see how things go. Perhaps there will be some announce to commorate first anniversary of HINDRAF rally in two weeks time.
