KUCHING: The People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which launched its Sarawak pro tem committee here yesterday, is gauging its support before deciding whether to set up a full-fledged state branch.

Its president Datuk M. Kayveas said this was why the party did not inform the state Barisan Nasional of its intention to enter Sarawak. “I will give the committee some time to see how big they can grow and how much support they can get. “Once we are ready we will inform the state. As of now I did not inform the state but there is no need to make a hoo-ha,” he told reporters after launching the committee. Kayveas was referring to comments made by several state Barisan leaders that they were in the dark about PPP’s intention to spread its wings to Sarawak.

He said PPP would inform the state and federal Barisan of its plans to set up a Sarawak branch if the pro tem committee could get between 5,000 and 10,000 members. So far, it has received 1,200 membership applications in the state, 400 of which have been processed.

On PPP becoming the first peninsula-based Barisan party to enter Sarawak, Kayveas said it should not be an issue since Opposition parties such as DAP, PAS and Parti Keadilan Rakyat were already in the state.

Meanwhile, in TAIPING, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the PPP would not get more seats for the coming polls. However, Tajol Rosli who is also state Barisan Nasional chairman said the PPP’s request could be entertained in the following general election. “When the next redelineation exercise is carried out, the PPP will be given more seats,” he told reporters after convening a pre-election meeting involving Barisan MPs, state assemblymen and component representatives from northern Perak.

Tajol Rosli also announced that the Barisan leadership had appointed Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Tan Lian Hoe as Barisan chairman for the parliamentary seat of Taiping. However, Tajol Rosli reiterated it did not mean that Kayveas would not be fielded for the Taiping seat.

KUCHING: The Peninsular Malaysia-based People's Progressive Party (PPP) unveiled its presence in Sarawak with the establishment of a state protem committee yesterday.

"This is only a soft launch of the protem committee of the party and we don't have any plans for a big launch now. "It is also to see the support, whether it comes from the voters, and how they will accept a peninsula-based party," PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas said.

Later, Kayveas, who is also a deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said he was targeting between 5,000 and 10,000 members.

He said it was up to the protem committee and members to make PPP's presence felt.

The PPP's entry into Sarawak was at the urging of members and he added that the protem committee had so far received 1,200 membership applications.

maybe one who knows that:

– rakyat have no (better?) choice
– rakyat only worries on local issues – fix the road, put up a surau, give out angpow (land title/house key etc)
– rakyat easily forget
– selfish mentality of individual : as long as my wellbeing is taken care, I have no worries.
– minority votes won't affect the results.

so, when is it? PM refuses to tell 🙂

Pak Lah keeps ’em guessing on elections

source

MADRID: The guessing game is still on as Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi refuses to give any clues as to when he may call the coming general election.

“It can be between now and March and it can be between now and March 2009,” the Prime Minister said in reference to the Barisan Nasional mandate which will end in March next year.  “I am thrilled to hear that everyone seems impatient for the general election,” he told reporters accompanying him on his visit to Spain.

Political parties have been in full gear anticipating the elections in March, with Barisan having conducted election dry runs in several states. Election pundits have been predicting the polling date as around early March as Abdullah has not made any overseas travel plans in February.

After attending the Alliance of Civilisations Forum here this week, the Prime Minister will travel to Davos to attend the World Economic Forum at the end of this month. He told a press conference late Monday that he would attend the Organisation of Islamic Conference summit in Senegal in March as he would be handing over the chairmanship to the host country.

Asked if the elections would be held before or after the OIC summit, Abdullah replied with a laugh: “I have not made any preparation for the general election.”

However, the Prime Minister said everyone should be prepared for the polls. “Whatever it is, you have to prepare. Normally, you still have one year, one year before we complete the mandate, it is a full year to prepare for election. That has been the way all these years.” The coming polls will be the country’s 12th general election.

malaysians feel safe about their jobs

well, if 1000 people interviewed, and assuming majority are bumiputra (60%), you have 60% already not worried about job. The balance 40%, if we take half of it, another 20%. 80% in the bag. Just kidding 🙂

One another note, the survey says only 3 out 10 (30%) say can get another job "fairly" easily. Means job mobility is a concern? Employers market now?

Malaysians score high in survey

PETALING JAYA: The majority of Malaysians feel safe in their present jobs, according to a Gallup International Association poll. It said 84% of Malaysians were optimistic about their job security with only Norway (85%) scoring higher in a survey of 61 countries. If the results are looked at as a whole, only one in four people think there is a chance they may become unemployed.

The Gallup International Voice of the People survey, conducted between October and December last year, asked people in 61 countries in different continents about their labour prospects. In Malaysia, 1,000 people above the age of 18 were surveyed by telephone. Some of the countries where more respondents declared there would be a chance they may become unemployed included Cameroon, Serbia, Panama, Bolivia and the Czech Republic.

The survey also asked respondents to assess the difficulty they would have in finding a new job if they were to lose their current one. Half of the Malaysian respondents felt they would take a longer time to find a new job while only three out of 10 were optimistic in getting new jobs fairly quickly.

On job security and the ability to find a new job, the survey found as a whole that with a higher level of education, confidence was higher. For job security, 72% of the respondents who felt safe had a high level of education against 57% with only basic education. The survey also found that confidence diminished with age, with only two in 10 respondents over 51 years old thinking they could find a job fairly quickly compared to four out of 10 of those below 30 years.

Gallup International Association is a non-profit association that conducts opinion and market research in over 100 countries.

PAS defers plan on non-Muslims

source

TUMPAT: PAS has backtracked on an earlier suggestion to allow non-Muslims to contest on its ticket in the next general election.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the proposal has been temporarily put on hold because of a deal with fellow opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

“The deal allows our supporters to stand on PKR tickets in the coming polls, so it still remains a win-win status for us,” he said yesterday.
