Lower Thaipusam turnout leads to wasted food

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23:
For the first time in 40 years, the Divine Life Society (DLS) has actually been forced to throw away the free food it gives out during the Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves. Yeah, I know, Part 0 sounds weird. I am thinking in terms of a prologue, a background to this year’s Thaipusam celebration. This year is not like any other year before it. Due to Hindraf and the rise of Makkal Sakthi, there are calls to boycott Batu Caves. This follows the action of the temple committee to call the police when HINDRAF rally participants gathered at Batu Caves on the night before the rally (24/11). This is like adding fuel to fire, since the committee has been repeatedly accused of misusing temple funds for so long.

Kedah and Malacca Thaipusam holiday maybe next year

Looks like Kedah and Malacca have to wait for another year (and also wait for election result!).

Meanwhile, Kedah has said it may declare Thaipusam a public holiday next year. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said in Alor Star that the state would not consider making it a holiday this year because there was not enough time to do so. “We have to seek approval from the Sultan of Kedah first. “It also involves some paperwork.
