Well, i hope the “more or less has been resolved” matter won’t come back and haunt the voters later. All the best to Lee! Good thing that he helped with the school matter.
Lee banks on the Indians
BARISAN Nasional candidate for Bukit Bintang Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng embarked on his election campaign with prayers on Sunday. Om Sri Mah Verabatra Kaci Temple committee members and some 50 devotees gathered at the Tiong Nam car park to pray for Dr Lee’s success.
“Dr Lee has done many good things for us in the past 15 years and we hope he can be elected and continue serving the community here,” said committee member A. Maruthupandian.
The prayers were performed at a makeshift altar next to a site marked for the rebuilding of the 50-year-old temple. It was learnt that the building of the temple on the site had met with City Hall’s resistance but Dr Lee had “more or less resolved the matter“.
Temple president K. Kanavathy said Dr Lee had helped about 300 families, who had been squatting on the land for about 50 years, obtain DBKL flats when the Starline LRT track was constructed.
Following the relocation, and with families moving out, the Appar Tamil School fell into crisis when enrolment dwindled. “Dr Lee raised funds to buy a school bus to transport the pupils and upgraded the school facilities. Now the school has more than 300 pupils,” Kanavathy said.
Earlier, Dr Lee told reporters that the 7,000-odd Indian voters in Bukit Bintang would determine the result in the parliamentary constituency.
“The Indian community told me that they would support me despite the Hindraf demonstrations as we had heart-to-heart talks on pertinent issues,” he said, adding that Barisan’s recent large-scale Ponggal celebration in the Golden Triangle had been well received.
