Normal malaysians only get 25 and 12 percent of scholarships

Posted by poobalan at 10:32 pm under BornInMalaysia | | View blog reactions

BETWEEN 2004 and 2007, a total of 6,084 Malaysian students were offered full scholarships by the Public Service Department to pursue their studies abroad, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He said 4,540 students were Bumiputeras and 1,544 students were non-Bumiputeras. Abdullah said 23,038 students were offered scholarships by the department to pursue their studies locally. Of this total, 20,096 were Bumiputeras and 2,942 students were non-Bumiputera.

Scholarship for Foreign studies:

Normal Malaysians (aka the rest of us) - 1544/6084 = 25.38%

Privileged Ones - 4540/6084 = 74.62%

Scholarship for Local studies:

Normal Malaysians (aka the rest of us) - 2942/23038 = 12.77%
Privileged Ones - 20096/23038 = 87.23%

Q: How many of the privileged ones (bumiputras) are Malays?

Q: Why is the percentage of normal malaysians (the rest of us without privileges) way lower than the national population percentage? Does it mean that normal malaysians are not qualified for the scholarships (not poor enough, result not good, or did not apply properly/at all)

Q: are all those students actually deserving ones (or selected based on their status)?

Note that the statistics above is purely from PSD (JPA). It does not include MARA and other exclusive ones specifically for certain groups only. AND it is only for the past 4 years. You can extend it to the last 20 and see the effects yourself.

Irony is that every ringgit and sen spent by PSD comes from all types of Malaysians, regardless of their privilege status. Fat, thin, OKU, black color, white color, brown color, specky, male, female, tall, short, straight or otherwise, professional, entrepreneur, wage earner. Millions of tax payers.

Isn’t it clear that this an equal opportunity country? We surely practice equal rights and opportunity in our country. No one grabs from one group and gives it to others. Who dare say some Malaysians are marginalised? Everyone is treated equally in this country. Of course 25% is equal to 75%, and 12% is equal to 87%. Who dare question? Sedition Act waiting for you! :)
