DAP Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan was sworn in at 9am today in front of Selangor Speaker Teng Chang Khim at the Kamunting detention camp in Taiping.

The last among the 56 Selangor state representatives to be sworn in, the swearing-in ceremony lasted just 10 minutes. Other state representatives of Selangor were sworn in at the Dewan Undangan Negeri in Shah Alam on April 22.

Among those present to witness the ceremony were his wife and three children, lawyers and legal advisers from the state, Home Ministry and the Prisons Department. A simple lunch was served after the ceremony.

Teng told reporters that Manoharan looked healthy and was in good spirits.

In fine spirits

“He was also very touched by the whole swearing-in ceremony – even though it was held in prison,” said Teng. “He (Manoharan) didn’t have much to say except that he hopes to be released soon.

Teng echoed Manoharan’s sentiments and urged the government to release him as soon as possible. “During the last elections, Manoharan won with a huge majority. This shows that voters are not afraid of him and do not see him as a national threat. So, why keep him in Kamunting any longer?” asked Teng.

During the March 8 elections, Manoharan polled 12,699 votes to Gerakan candidate Ching Su Chen’s 5,515 for the Kota Alam Shah seat.

Manoharan was arrested on Dec 13 with four others shortly after the Nov 25 rally organised by Hindraf which drew some 30,000 people to the streets.

His detention however does not legally affect his position as a state representative as there are no written laws to stipulate that an ISA detainee cannot continue to perform his or her duties while being detained.

    Y.B.,
I am a citizen of klang would like to giv a suggestion. I would suggest that u use bahasa kebangsaan in ur bunting/banner/poster as well as other languages to show our pride in our national language. Ur buntings at klang little india were only written in english n tamil. To me, it lack of ‘saya anak malaysia’ spirit. Posters in bahasa malaysia is an asset to attract tourist just like when we were in i.e. Paris, we purposely took picture in front of its signboard with french language, therefore when foreigners come here they also would like to capture one thing that is unique to this country. This is just my opinion. Kita harus bangga pada bahasa kebangsaan kita. Terima kasih dan selamat menyambut hari Deepavali
