BUKIT MERTAJAM: In Tamil movies, scenes of villagers rushing out of their homes to catch a glimpse of the handsome M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) as he arrives to rescue them from villains are common.
Closer to home, Dr P. Ramasamy, may not have the looks of the late Kollywood matinee idol but he was a crowd-puller at the Batu Kawan Estate where he made his first constituency visit since winning in the general election.
Men, women and children came out excitedly upon hearing that the giant-killer, who defeated Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon by 9,485 votes, had come to thank them personally for electing him their MP.
He also bagged the Prai state seat by a 5,176-vote majority, defeating Barisan Nasional’s L. Krishnan and independent candidate R. Ulaganathan.
“It was makkal sakti (people’s power) that propelled me to victory and I will never forget all of you,” he told them.
