MIC: Lift freeze on scrap metal licences

SEREMBAN: Police should lift the freeze on the issuance of licences for scrap metal dealers, said state MIC chairman Datuk T Rajagopalu.

He said many Indians were being deprived of a living simply because the police had stopped issuing the licences since early last year.

“The police claim the freeze was necessary to stop the theft of metal. In fact, we want the police to charge those involved in theft. A blanket freeze has caused many families to suffer,” he said yesterday.

Rajagopalu said a widow with four children who wanted to continue her husband’s scrap metal business was among those denied a licence to operate the business.

Last year, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the issuance of new licences was frozen due to the unusually high number of metal thefts.

Rajagopalu said genuine dealers should not be punished for the wrongdoings of a few. “Even unemployed graduates had had their applications for licences rejected.”
