SV admits that the community “still had to fight” for their rights, and his probably right that the political situation is not suitable yet. Perhaps in 5 years time, it will be. A proper survey of Indian voters need to be done to understand the reasons for the vote swing. Is it due to maturity or in anger against the government, MIC, and SV (not necessarily in that order). Each voter would have his/her own reasons…and not all voters voted for the Malaysia Malaysian. Probably high in the rankings would be support for equal rights, support for HINDRAF, “anything but BN” mentality, hatred against SV/MIC, protest againsts price hikes, support for opposition, ideology, and local issues (ineffective earlier representatives).
But what really stands out is his claim that the fight for the Indians rights can:
only be done through MIC.
People already fed up hearing this kind of patronising words. Putting MIC on a pedestal will only bring forth its demise faster. Instead, MIC need to think of it as a friend of the community. Not Master. Not God. Not Savior. Not Protector. The community does not need these self-proclaiming names. Bring on the humility, the togetherness, the bravery to stand for community rights, the friendliness, the selflessness, the transparency. Earn the respect of the community. Don’t demand, threaten or beg for it.
If they want to attract 300,000 youths and young adults, especially those who are more cyber-inclined, professionals, exposed to Astro News package, more risk-tolerant, then this holier-than-thou mentality will backfire. The freebie mentality of offering tamil movies on weekend afternoons on TV, providinf free gifts, etc., is not effective as well. People will just take and still vote against you.
MIC, its time to learn!
Samy: Time not ripe for Barisan to be a single party
KUALA LUMPUR: The time is not right for a Barisan Nasional to become a single party as suggested by Gerakan, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.
“In today’s political situation, such an action will dilute the rights of the Indian community,” he said. Samy Vellu said the smaller communities like the Indians still had to fight for their rights and this could only be done through MIC.
He was commenting on Perak Gerakan chief Datuk Chang Ko Youn’s call to Barisan Nasional component parties to consider amending their constitutions to accept members of all races. He said the results of the just-concluded general election showed that the electorate did not vote according to the racial background of the candidates.Chang, who is also Gerakan national vice-president, said it was time for Barisan to study the composition of its coalition and the ideologies of the respective political parties.”Component members of the Barisan must be open to all races and not only to one race. This is the first step and it should include Umno, MCA and the MIC,” he said.Chang, the former Jalong assemblyman, lost his bid for the Beruas parliamentary seat against DAP’s Ngeh Koo Ham, the Perak DAP chief.
There have been numerous ‘leaders” like SV who after having been shown the door kept insisting that they were needed to ‘help re -build’ the organisation. They all ended up in history’s waste bins and along with them went the organisations! There must be something critically wrong with the brains of such leaders!
Samy Velu who portrays himself as the gung ho and indispensible leader of the MIC is yet to realize that he and his style of politics has become a relic.
He and his thuggish days are gone forever. It is high time he relinquishes all his positions in the MIC if he really wishes it to survive.
At least some GERAKAN leaders have seen the effects of the tsunami and have called for a radical shift in the thought process within the BN. They are asking for an end to communal politics but the great leader of the MIC still feels the Indians would be left out without him at the helm. What nonsense! Looks like there is no end to his ego trip.
If he doesn’t go graciously, somebody might just say: Podah! Po!! It might happen at the MIC general meeting.
Glad if finally MIC members could start to ‘think’ rationally coming general meeting and demand for fresh leadership . Unless the all the ‘dungu’ refuse to ‘think’ then no one could stop MIC from going down the drain . bye-bye!
