Dr S Subra supports automatic PSD scholarship offer

He is echoing what parents, students and many sane malaysian are asking, begging, cajoling for all this while. By making such a clear rule, it will serve as motivation for students, ensure transparency, and improve the perception of PSD in the eyes of the public.

Now, did the minister suggest this at the cabinet today? No point making press statement because the public can’t do much.

10A1s students should be automatically offered PSD scholarships, says Dr Subra

PETALING JAYA: Students who score 10A1s and above in their SPM examinations should be automatically offered Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships, MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said.

He said such a policy would ensure that these students, regardless of race and background, were not sidelined appropriately rewarded for their academic efforts. Dr Subramaniam, who is also Human Resources Minister, said parents would have a negative perception of the government if such a system was not implemented.

He said some 140 students who excelled in SPM had approached the party to support their PSD scholarship appeal after being rejected on various grounds this year.

“The PSD should give a clear explanation to the public on their selection criteria for scholarship recipients,” he said in a statement Friday. . Dr Subrmaniam said the Education Ministry should also limit the number of subjects allowed to be taken by students, adding that some schools offered a maximum of 10 subjects while others allowed up to 17 subjects. He suggested that the ministry offer separate certificates for additional subjects other that the compulsory subjects in the examination.

If all the money collected for MAIKA holding had been properly invested and managed by technocrats (there are hundreds of young brilliant young men and women amongst Malaysian Indians) we need not be in a state that we are in now! We have to literally beg the government for help. The money invested in MAIKA should have grown to several billion ringgit by now and we should have been self sufficient to educate our bright ones in the best tertiary institutions in the world!

I am still in the dark about the South Indian Labour Fund. What actually happened to the money? Where has the money gone? Have “our” politicians swallowed it? I would really appreciate it if there is someone out there to shed some light on this matter – I am sure there are many in the community who are not even aware of something called the South Indian Labour Fund! I am sure that there must have been a substantial amount or sufficient assets that could help a lot of our young ones. This money was from the blood sweat and tears of our forefathers who came into Malaya which was full of malaria and other infectious diseases and developed the rubber estates, tea estates and tin mines.

The other thing that troubles me is the rumour that the Medical College in Kedah belongs to a few shareholders and not to a Trust Fund held on behalf of the Indians in Malaysia. It will be nice if someone can shed some light into this matter too. Does anyone know anything at all on the ownership of the Medical College in Kedah!?

And what about the NLFCS! How many estates are left? What has happened to all the money that must have been obtained selling the numerous estates? Where was the money invested? How much is left in the kitty? I was told by a source that it is difficult to become a member of the NLFCS let alone go to one of their AGMs and put up proper questions.
Maybe the source is a disgruntled person but certainly I would like to know from people who have some knowledge of the inside of the NLFCS to shed some light.

Most of our young people are descendants of estate workers who put up !0 ringgit a month ( very big money in the early sixties) to help buy the estates when the White man left Malaya. The were inspired by selfless people like Tun VT Sambanthan and Tunku Abudul Rahman. Has that institution too become the fiefdom of a few!? I am asking these questions (perhaps in ignorance) but some answers from anyone who knows about these matters will help set the record straight. Maybe it is time the young Malaysian Indians swelled up and become members of the NLFCS and take over the running of it and see if they can run the NLFCS better! The selfless people who took care of the NLFCS all these years can now retire and help these young people do it! WHY NOT!?
