We lost because of him!

One should not believe a word ex-PM Mahathir says on face value. There’s always a hidden agenda somewhere. So, if he says Samy Vellu should go (short of harakiri-ing), or that Nazri should be dropped from Cabinet, or Isa Samad is not fit to be a candidate, there’s something else happening behind the scenes. Let’s look at his comments (also available in Malaysiakini):

“If we look at other countries, whenever a leader fails, he resigns. In Japan he commits harakiri. We’re not asking him (Samy Vellu) to commit harakiri.

You (Samy Vellu) have failed to lead the MIC until you yourself lost,” he said.

Citing the example of former prime minsiter Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who resigned after his poor performance, Tun Dr Mahathir said: “Samy Vellu performed worse than Pak Lah (Abdullah) but he did not want to relinquish the post.

“He should have resigned before things got to this stage.”

He said he had a right to criticise anyone for the sake of the Barisan, and added: “I’ve criticised Pak Lah, who’s Samy Vellu that I cannot criticise?” [Where is Samy going to hide after this? Does this mean more MIC staunch supporters will propose or even garland Mahathir’s pictures with slippers? Anyone supporter will self-immolate like in Tamil Nadu? I don’t think so 🙂 ]

Smoking parents?

Had early dinner at Ratha Curry House in Bandar Puteri today. And the following left a bad taste in my mind (nope, not the food!):

A guy was smoking, seated next to a boy aged about 7-10 years old. OK, I can still take that, considering secondary smoking is hazardous and setting a bad example for the boy. What I saw next scared me!  There was a lady seated opposite the man, and she smoked too, two pieces of poison sticks within 15 mins or so.  And this is witnessed by the boy. I presume the man and woman was the parents (even though they were of different race) since all three came together.

Really disturbing! They both looked educated, but in reality?

The poor remain poorer

Low wage earners will be looking forward to the festive season(s) with dread. With meager income in the ever-escalating cost of living cities, its hard to make ends meet. And the alternatives are practically non-existent. Those working as cleaners, security guards, drivers, cashiers, sales persons, etc, especially in small establishments or those that don’t really bother about employee welfare will be hard pressed to celebrate festivals with pomp.

I was surprised to hear that at some organization, the lower level staff ‘s overtime payments were held back.  The workers don’t have much choice as jobs are not easy to find. Make some noise, and you’ll find a foreign worker taking your place.  Not sure if in these kind of  cases, the top management or owners are aware of the predicament of their staff in the lowest rungs. Maybe its some mid-level management or even contract manager who is doing all this. I’m also wondering how much the top management and directors take home, as comparison to the executives and workers in an organization. What’s the point of winning awards and plaudits when own backyard tells a stinking story.

I hope the Human Resource Ministry will conduct spot checks on companies (hint: try the  dozens of IPTS, private  healthcare facilities, etc in Klang Valley) and check their payrolls. Need to be proactive instead of waiting for complaints to fall on their laps.

Kg Pandan Indian Settlement relocation starting

Need to record this article for few reasons:

The village is being redeveloped for the residents. “In the next three years, when the flats are ready, the residents can return and will be given the first priority to build their homes,’

Quoting Deputy FT Minister Saravanan. That will be election year right?

Anyway, the coming month is Deepavali. Who negotiated to shift during that time? At least September or November during school holidays would have been more reasonable!

At least some of them managed to get housing within the city area itself. Other have no choice but to more to areas like Puchong.

THE clock is ticking for the 255 families residing in the 70-year-old Indian settlement in Kampung Pandan, as the October deadline to vacate their homes to make way redevelopment is almost here.

The first batch of families have received their offer letters to move to low-cost housing units in the city.

A total of 15 families, mostly the elderly, infirm, and those with school-going children received their letters from Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan.

Saravanan said the ministry and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had considered the request from residents who are old and sickly as well as those with large extended families to be moved to closer Public Housing Scheme (PPR) units. He added that other residents would eventually have to move out in batches to various PPR units in the city.

“The village is being redeveloped for the residents.

“In the next three years, when the flats are ready, the residents can return and will be given the first priority to build their homes,’’ he said.

Saravanan said the development project involved building 480 low-cost units for the residents. Each unit will measure 700 sq ft — which is 50 sq ft extra compared to the other PPR in the city and it is going to be more stylish.

In May, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail had given residents a grace period of until Octoberto relocate.

They were initially supposed to move out on May 14, but the Federal Territories Ministry agreed to postpone their relocation.

Fuad had stressed that DBKL would not be able to start building the low-cost housing until the residents moved out.

The residents were told to relocate to PPR Kg Muhibbah in Puchong which is 20km away from their homes.
