I guess the wheels are in motion already, because its says “website under construction” today!

Let’s see what are the new things MIC Portal is going to have:

MIC president S Samy Vellu said Indian Malaysians can soon become members of the party through online registration, a move he expect would bolster the party’s strength and unite Indians under one political party in the Barisan Nasional.

The MIC is the latest among several BN component parties which have started online membership registration. Umno launched its online membership portal last week.

Samy Vellu said he was confident that the move which was in line with the party’s ‘Unity Plan for the Indian Malaysians’, could increase MIC membership to at least 50,000 people initially.

MIC currently has about 630,000 members with almost 5,000 branches.

… “Once the MIC portal is launched soon, we will embark on a massive online membership registration,” he said in a statement.

Samy Vellu said the MIC was targetting professionals and those who failed to become members through existing branches for various reasons.

“The MIC headquarters will admit them as members directly into the party without having to go through the branches which some feel is cumbersome,” he said.

He said the first phase of the MIC portal would include an eBlog, eForum, eComplaint, polls, latest news and announcements as well as information on all MIC subsidiaries, the MIED and the Social Strategic Foundation.

“The second phase will include Tele-Centre, a project that allows Indians to get jobs and work professionally from their home and also an Online Extensive Survey form accessible by every branch officer which allows them to get in-depth information about the Indians staying under their jurisdiction,” he added.

Wow! That’s quite a handful. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of any dates when all these will be available. And perhaps someone can inform those in charge to drop the “e” from “eBlog” – its kind of redundant, if you know what I mean.

Keedah ADUN Arumugam threatened

From NST:

Bukit Selambau assemblyman V. Arumugam has lodged a police report that threats have been made on his life and that of his family if he did not leave PKR and join the Barisan Nasional.

The state PKR deputy chairman, who is also state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman, lodged the report at the Sungai Petani police station yesterday afternoon.

He said this was not the first time he was lodging a report with the police over similar threats, purportedly by agents of Barisan Nasional.

Arumugam, a former Royal Malaysian Air Force officer, said there were attempts to “kidnap” him last October.

“Many people approached me and asked me to defect to BN while others threatened me to do so.

“I will not budge. I was elected under the PKR ticket and I vow to stay with the people who have elected me into office.”

He said last December, someone smashed the windscreen of his official car with a brick which carried a note threatening his life if he did not defect to BN.

He said the latest incidents involving the two Perak PKR assemblymen compelled him to make public the threats on his life and family.

“A few days ago, some people approached me with lucrative offers to leave PKR.

“All these are very scary and I want the police to investigate all my complaints,” he said, adding that yesterday’s report was his third with the police since last year.

From Malaysiakini:

Amid the political turmoil in Perak, a PKR elected representative in Kedah has filed a police report claiming among others that there was an attempt to kidnap him.
Bukit Selambau assemblyperson V Arumugam also claimed that he and his officers have received numerous threats.

“All of this is being done in order to force me to leave PKR and move to Barisan Nasional,” alleged the state exco in a statement today.

Arumugam had filed the police report at the Sungai Petani district police headquarters this afternoon.

Apart from the alleged ‘kidnap’ attempt last November, the assemblyperson claimed that he had also received threats via the telephone.

“On Dec 12, there was an incident where the windscreen of the official exco car (Proton Perdana) was smashed and there was a note containing a threat which was tied to a brick.

“A few days ago, several individuals had approached me with lucrative offers in order to coax me into leaving PKR,” he said.

According to Arumugam, the latest incident involving two PKR assemblypersons in Perak had motivated him to make this matter public.

“I am worried that if I do not come forward, then the safety of my family would continue to be threatened.

“I also call on the police to investigate all my police reports since March 2008 and take the necessary action,” he added.

1.3 million expected at Batu Caves for Thaipusam

The Star reported that :

A record-breaking 1.3 million devotees and visitors are expected to pack Batu Caves for the Thaipusam celebration this Sunday.

The figure is an increase from the one million people that attended the celebration last year. The Batu Caves temple committee has been making preparations to cater to the expected massive crowd.

Recently, it spent RM640,000 to improve basic amenities like public toilets and water supply. There will also be more than 600 stalls selling food, drinks, trinkets, clothing and souvenirs.

Security is another aspect being stressed on. More than 1,000 policemen will be stationed at the temple grounds and its surrounding area on that day.

Also for the first time, there will be a 15-minute fireworks display on the eve of Thaipusam. The fireworks would be lighted at midnight, followed by a chariot procession.

I’m surprised that it mentioned 1 million people attended Thaipusam at Batu Caves last year. Practically everyone knows the community boycotted Batu Caves last year, resulting in huge drop of visitors. Just search my previous postings.

Anyway, looks like no calls for boycott this year from any quarters. Perhaps those concerned about the condition of SJKT Batu Caves may want to highlight their grievances to the public.   The  public may be very interested to know how much the temple have helped the school for the last decade at least.

MIC Youth forms watchdog committee after Kugan saga

Well, at least some good thing came out of Kugan’s death. MIC Youth is setting up a watchdog committee to “monitor and prevent such deaths from happening in the future”.

The Youth wing’s coordinator T Mohan told Malaysiakini that the committee would consist of 10 people, the majority of whom were lawyers and non-party members.

The committee itself will be headed by lawyer SP Muthuvelu, said Mohan.

The formation of the committee was discussed and agreed by the MIC Youth in a council meeting this morning.

“Muthuvelu will be the chairperson on the committee. He will be assisted by seven other lawyers, none of whom are from the party,” said Mohan.

He added that the Youth wing’s secretary C Shivarraj and another person would be the two representative of the party in the committee.

“We wanted independent people in the committee. Of the eight lawyers, four of them are from non-governmental organisations,” he added.

He further said that the main purpose of the committee was to look into custodial deaths and to give feedback to the government on how to stop such deaths from happening again.

The committee has been given three weeks to compile a list and conduct a research of past custodial deaths. We want to get to the root of this problem…to find out why it happens, especially to youths from the Indian community.

“And as soon as the committee has compiled a list of previous cases and our findings on the reasons for these cases, a memorandum will be submitted to the government and the police,” he said.

Aim is to stop custodial deaths

Mohan also said that the committee would take a keen interest in the Kugan case.

“We want the committee to tell us how the family can be compensated and what else could be done to help them.”

However he said the main thrust of the committee was to make sure that no more persons end up dead while in police detention.

“For starters this committee will be watching the police closely in the event there is another custodial death. In the long run, the committee hopes to put up workable proposals to ensure there are no more custodial deaths,” he said.

The Youth wing’s advisor S Vell Paari told Malaysiakini that the objective of the committee was to ensure that the youth wing was playing its role in protecting the Indian community.

“We can’t be doing things on ad hoc basis, trying to pool people every time something like Kugan’s case happens.

“That’s why we wanted this committee to be there on a permanent basis to look on such matters, to see how we can avoid them from happening altogether,” he said.

While Malaysiakini reported as above, NST had slightly different story:

MIC Youth has set up a watchdog committee to monitor cases of brutality and deaths in police lock-ups.

The newly formed committee comprises seven lawyers and three representatives from non-governmental organisations, all members of MIC Youth. [MK said only 2 from MIC Youth and 8 lawyers]

Acting MIC Youth chief T. Mohan said the committee had already begun compiling the details of the death of A. Kugan from the police and his family.

The 22-year-old died in the police lock-up at Taipan, Subang Jaya, on Jan 20.

He had been in detention from Jan 14 for investigation into his possible involvement in the theft of several luxury cars.

“These details will be contained in a memorandum to be submitted to the inspector-general of police and deputy prime minister within a week or two. [MK reported 3 weeks]

“We want the police to take action, including specialised training, to make its personnel more responsible for safeguarding human life so there is no repeat of a case like Kugan’s.”

Speaking after chairing the national MIC Youth council meeting yesterday, Mohan said the police and Home Ministry should re-open and thoroughly investigate every death in police custody.

“The reports of these investigations must be made public and action must be taken against the personnel involved to restore public confidence in the police force.”

Mohan said although people of all races had died in police custody, records show that in the last eight years about 80 Indians had died in lock-ups, possibly due to abuse by the police or by fellow prisoners.

“The police should also appoint more Indian officers to high positions. They would be better equipped to handle young Indian offenders and spread anti-crime awareness.

“Currently the highest rank Indian police officers have reached is Senior Assistant Commissioner I,” he said, adding MIC Youth was planning prayers for Kugan at the Klang Sivan temple on Friday evening.

By the way, does anyone keep track how many committees have been formed by MIC/other parties and their status so far? We don’t want it to be like some entities – many committees, but no action nor results.

Jumping ships cause turmoil in Perak

When Bota assemblyman Nasaruddin quit UMNO to join PKR last week, PM Badawi called him weak. There were stories that the ADUN was offered posts or enticed with somethings, which obviously the ADUN denied.

Now, with two PKR assemblymen causing sleepless nights for Perak state government and Anwar, it wil be interesting to see what PM Badawi will say if these guys do quit PKR and defect to UMNO. Will BN accept weak people or will they be called heroes and patriots?

Stories are abound that the two – Behrang assemblyperson Jamaluddin Mat Radzi and Changkat Jering assemblyperson Osman Jailu were seen in Pekan together with Deputy PM Najib, while PR leader admit couldn’t get into touch with them for last few days. Menteri Besar Nizar said they were going to lodge police report on missing persons since it has been 5 days.

Most interesting is this: They were charged in a Sessions Court on Aug 25 last year with allegedly receiving bribes over the application for a RM180 million housing project in Sri Iskandar in Perak Tengah. Their case comes up for hearing on Feb 10. So in addition to being weak, they are suspects in a criminal case. All this while PR leaders said it was a frame-up, while UMNO leaders bayed for blood. Now, will UMNO accept them?

Things got worse today when Perak state assembly speaker V Sivakumar said that he had received letters of resignation from the two guys at about 5.45pm at his house (via fax?).  Sivakumar subsequently proclaimed the seats as vacant and will inform Election Commission to hold by-election in 60 days. The resignation was denied by one of them – Jamaluddin (who said he was on MC all this while):

“This is an undated letter that I and six other PKR assemblymen were made to sign in March last year,” he said.

He said that the letter was only a pledge of loyalty, stating that if they (the state representative) were to ever quit PKR, they would automatically vacate their seats.

He added that the letter was signed under duress and that he would be discussing the legality of it with his lawyers.

“I am still Behrang assemblyman,” Jamaluddin was quoted as saying.

“Osman and I are still PKR state representatives and have never declared our intentions to leave the party or to become independents, or to join Umno,” he said, according to a Bernama report.

But in the Star, its reported that the assemblyman is quitting PKR and will be an independent.

So, the plot thickens.

I suspect these two guys are jumping ship, since both Malaysiakini and NST quoted PM Badawi as confirming that some PKR assemblymen are defecting to UMNO, while Star said “he neither denied nor confirmed”.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today revealed that several Pakatan Rakyat state representatives from Perak could soon join the Barisan Nasional.

“God willing, it will happen,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama. He said this when asked to comment on talks that two missing Perak Pakatan state excos are defecting to BN.

… He refused to state the identity or the number of Pakatan representatives that are planning to defect.

He however added that elected representatives would want to join Umno because they had confidence in its struggle.

“(We will) accept them as it is their choice and they want to join us in the struggle… it will be a new experience for them and allow them the opportunities to serve through the BN,” said Abdullah.

“We will make the official announcement when all things are in place,” he added.

There was also question marks over deputy assembly speaker Hee Yit Fong of DAP who was missing from recent functions. Some claimed she will move to MCA. But this was denied by Hee today.

Meanwhile, on a seemingly unrelated story, Karpal Singh said that DAP will support BN’s call to create an anti-hopping law.

If those two guys quit PKR and move to UMNO (or remain independent on paper), will the court case favor them? Can the undated resignation letter be challenged?
