Both were at the HINDRAF-arranged gathering to present the Agong with flowers and teddy bears today at 10.30am. 15 children were selected to present the teddy bears. The gift were placed at the Istana Negara’s entrance.

According to HINDRAF, the purpose of the gathering was to ask the Agong, on Father’s Day tomorrow, to  release the fathers’ of these children. Hindraf National Event Coordinator, Kannan says:

the purpose of the gathering was to appeal to the King to advise Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar to release all the ISA detainees.

“These children do not have their fathers with them for Father’s Day (tomorrow) and that’s why they gave the King flowers as he too is a father,”

Obviously no one was around to receive the gift. Instead, the police instructed the crowd to disperse. Some were arrested, including the MPs above, and also MP for Ampang, Zuraida Kamaruddin.

According to MalaysiaKini, they were released on police bail around 1pm.  Hindraf Lawyer N Surendran was also arrested and released on bail.

According to the police:

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said all of the people arrested were released on bail by 12.45pm.

He said the police arrived at about 10am and asked members of the public, including tourists, to vacate the area around Istana Negara’s main gate.

“Everybody left except for a group who refused to leave. We gave them three warnings to disperse. Deputy OCPD (Supt Azri Abd Rahman) spoke to them, and at 10.20am, I told gave them five minutes to disperse.  “At 10.25am, they still refused to leave so we arrested them. No force was used, and they did not resist arrest,” he said.

At 10.35am, ACP Wan Bari said a group of 70 people, including about 15 children, alighted buses parked some distance away and walked towards Istana Negara. “Each child was carrying a basket lined with yellow cloth containing flowers and a teddy bear. They left the baskets in front of the palace gate,” he said, adding that they left after being asked to.

ACP Wan Bari said he could not comment further on investigations as “counter-reports have been made” against him for ordering the arrest of the six, and his comments would prejudice investigations.

Friday sees the screening of Dasavatharam, Kamalhaasan’s long awaited movie! Hopefully I can catch it next week. In the meantime, wonder if our makkal can share their views on the movie. Judging from the photo below, it would be full house! I wonder if they joined the protest against fuel hike after 2pm at Kg Baru.

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who have donated to help Satish of Olaichuvadi. He is recuperating from his accident injuries.  Amid fuel price increase and the subsequent impact, people still willing to contribute to help another person. Bravo!

I’ve received an update of the accounts up till 9.00am 11th June 2008:

HINDRAF Png               –  RM 3110

HINDRAF Central         –  RM   500

Donations from public –  RM 1530

Total collected:              RM 5140

Balance needed        –   RM 3460

However, as you can see above, there still a shortage of RM 3460 which is needed to cover the cost of the operation. Earlier the cost was estimated at about RM7000, but the actual figure is about RM8600.

Details of his medical condition and records will be posted once I get, but in the meantime, please spread the news and help to cover the medical cost.

11th time for Samy

If Alex is still around, there will be a contest. There’s another 9 months left. Let’s see what more interesting stories turn up. Although some quarters clamour for his retirement, Samy is firm on continuing until 2012.

Most likely he will win as I doubt there are any strong contenders or dissidents that will win support from the branch leaders.

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said anyone can contest for the presidency when nominations are held next year. “I will not stop anyone from contesting for the post,” he said.

The 72-year-old, who has been the president since 1979, completes his term on March 8 next year. Elections would have to be held within two months after that.

Speaking to reporters after presenting the President’s Merit Award to 411 SPM and STPM students here on Thursday, he said: “Lots of people want to see Samy Vellu finished.”

“I don’t worry about it. I will keep on serving the Indian community and the MIC until they say that they don’t want me … then I will say goodbye”, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has declared that he would contest the top post for a record 11th term at the party’s presidential election in March next year. I will not stop anyone from contesting the president’s post.”We are a democratic party. I am elected by popular vote, so it is the members who will decide.

“I will continue serving until the members say they don’t want me. My term ends on March 8,” Samy Vellu said after handing over the president’s merit awards to excellent SPM and STPM Indian students at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

Samy Vellu, 72, has declared that he would quit active politics in 2012 and this bid would be his last as party president, a post which he has held since 1981, after serving two years before as acting president.
The MIC supremo lost the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in the March 8 general election, and speculation has been rife that the veteran politician would contest the post for the last time next year before handing over the party to the chosen successor.

To contest the president’s post, a potential candidate needs to amass at least 50 nominations from the 3,600 MIC branches nationwide.

Free Water in Selangor

June 12th, 2008

I thought Khalil’s plan will fall flat, especially when Syabas said they could not come to an agreement regarding the payment period. However, in the last one day, the Selangor government, through Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) has managed to successfully negotiate a longer payment period.

Even though the free water plan is starting from June 16 and will be reflected from next month’s bill onwards, nonetheless its been successfully pulled off by Pakatan government. But for how long it can be sustained is a question mark. The subsidy is expected to cost RM1.1 million per month for 20 cubic metre per household (according to Malaysiakini). However, NST reports that its going to cost a whopping RM10.8 million per month! The Star provided its own figure of RM1.8 million per month. Looks like 3 parties with three different figures.

There are arguments that providing free water will make people more wasteful and less concerned about conserving water. Anything free won’t be appreciated easily.

What do you think?
