Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has warned Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi not to interfere in Malaysian politics.

At a press conference in the Parliament lobby, Nazri (left) said Karunanidhi (right) should "look at his own backyard" before interfering in Malaysia’s affairs.

"His own state is out of control. (What happens in Malaysia) has nothing to do with him. This is not his country. This is Malaysia," said Nazri.

Karunanidhi has reportedly written to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking immediate action for the "sufferings and bad treatment" of Tamils in Malaysia, based on grievances linked to last Sunday’s street protest.

Nazri also took the opportunity to warn the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), the coalition behind the rally, against challenging the government.

"I would like to reiterate the prime minister’s and deputy prime minister's statement that we would not accept challenges from Hindraf," he said.

"In France, the authorities use rubber bullets to control the crowd, we only use water cannon and tear gas, and still they (Hindraf) said that we (the police) have used excessive force.”

Check on claims

Nazri further said the government would not hesitate to charge Hindraf legal adviser P Uthayakumar under the Sedition Act if it is true that he had made certain claims in a memorandum to be presented to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The memorandum that the Umno led government had killed some hundred Indians in the Kampung Medan "mini genocide" (in May 2001) and that the Indian Malaysians fear they would be forced into terrorism in a matter of time, as has happened among Sri Lankan Tamils.

Nazri was of the view that words like "genocide" could incite the Indian community to hate the Malays and vice versa.

) has to be responsible for his actions. We will discuss this with the attorney-general and consider charging him under the Sedition Act," he said.

Asked when the government would act on its threat to use the Internal Security Act against demonstrators, Nazri said: "For the time being, we will use existing laws. We will use the police and open court as long as we can control the situation."

Asked for an update on the royal commission of inquiry into the Lingam tape , Nazri said the cabinet meeting today, which was chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, discussed only the terms of reference.

He said the cabinet did not discuss the composition of the commission and that Abdullah would select its members and announce all the details.

jeyaraj receives citizenship

Finally, I belong here, says Jeyaraj

By Sonia Ramachandran

PETALING JAYA: Sept 24, 2007 will be etched forever in David Jeyaraj's memory.

It was the day he received his MyKad and citizenship. "From having no nation, I now feel I belong to this country. I'm also more confident and more secure. I have also opened a bank account and applied for a passport, things which I could only dream about before. "I can now also board a plane for the first time in my life," said Jeyaraj.

His newfound status is due mainly to Era Consumer, a non-governmental agency.

He also owes his citizenship to New Straits Times reader P. Ambika who was touched by his plight and took up his case.

Jeyaraj used to roam the streets with a picture of a woman holding a baby, asking everyone if they had seen her. The picture was that of his biological mother, Anbaiakie Muthan. After Jeyaraj was born on Aug 10, 1982, Anbaiakie went in search of her mother in Kulim, Kedah, only to find out that she had died. She then moved in with her mother's  neighbours. Not long after that, Anbaiakie signed a consent of adoption order and left Jeyaraj behind. On the order, her name was spelt Anbaiakie Muthan but Jeyaraj's birth certificate showed his mother's name as Anbaiakie Moton. The identity card number and name of his father were not mentioned in the certificate.

When Jeyaraj was 12, he was issued a renewable green IC (a temporary resident identification card) but the government stopped issuing temporary identity cards in 2003. The National Registration Department (NRD) told him his biological mother had to come forward before he could be given citizenship. Using Anbaiakie's IC number on the adoption order, Jeyaraj, along with Era Consumer, managed to trace her to a shelter in Kuala Lumpur. He discovered that Anbaiakie had also given birth to two daughters. He managed to get a photograph of Anbaiakie from the shelter's administrator.

Era Consumer raised his plight with the NST which ran an article about him. Ambika who volunteers at the Lighthouse Drop-In Centre, which provides food for the poor and homeless, recognised Anbaiakie from the photograph in the NST article and called up. Arrangements were made for them to meet at the Lighthouse Drop-In Centre on June 18.

"Jeyaraj stood at one side and just observed his mother. I could see tears in his eyes. After dinner was over, we called Anbaiakie to meet Jeyaraj. She said she had been looking for her son for 10 years and was so happy to finally find him," she said.

Jeyaraj said the MyKad was among his most treasured possessions. "I now have something that I never thought I would have — my own MyKad. I can now finally get on with my life," he said. He thanked Era Consumer director Nanthini Ramalo for not giving up on the search for his mother.

Break for mum denied convert son’s bequest

source

PENANG: The Amanah Raya Berhad has offered to settle a suit by a Hindu woman who could not inherit the insurance monies left by her son who died a Muslim. High Court judge Justice John Louis O’Hara fixed Jan 29 for mention pending the settlement between Amanah Raya and 61-year-old cleaner M. Rukumony.

The woman had also named the Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia Berhad in her claim dated April 15, 2005. She claimed that her son E. Ragu, 23, who was an army ranger, was found in a coma at Kem Wardieburn Setapak Kuala Lumpur, and died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Aug 2, 2000.

In her claim, Rukumony said the co-operative had taken out a policy on her son but refused to pay her the RM56,300 and instead had deposited it with Amanah Raya. Ragu, a bachelor, had made a trust deed on Sept 6, 1999, and an assignment under Section 23 of the Civil Law Act 1956 on Feb 1, 2000, making Rukumony the beneficiary.

The co-operative said Ragu converted to Islam on Dec 31, 1999, and his Muslim name was Mohamed Redzuan Abdullah Ellaiappan. It claimed that under the Syariah Law, Rukumony could not inherit the property of her deceased son because she is a non-Muslim.  The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council has intervened in the case.

Counsel Darshan Singh Khaira represented Rukumony while Rosmaidar Mustafa represented Amanah Raya. Abdul Muiz Samsuri appeared for the council. Rukumony was not present in court yesterday.

Abdullah: I'll continue with my style
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/75325

Nov 27, 07 1:34pm

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today said he will continue with his style of administration since Malaysians are happy with it.

Responding to a finding of a recent survey, Abdullah said that he was happy with the survey that showed Malaysians were happy with the administration of the present government.

quoted Abdullah as saying.

“We will continue to administer the country like we are doing now,” he added.

The premier, talking to journalists at the end of his two-day visit to Egypt, also said that he welcomed constructive criticism from everyone.

“If someone wants to criticise, then it is fine as long as it is constructive criticism and we will try to do whatever possible to overcome the problems we face.

"The important thing is that we will do everything possible to ensure success of the national vision to uplift all Malaysians. To those who supported the current government, I wish to say thank you.

"To those who criticise, I would also say thank you but please ensure the criticisms are fair and not overboard, do not make your own conclusions without knowing the truth," he said.

Economy, safety and corruption

Bernama also reported that Abdullah, who turned 68 today, when asked what was his birthday wish, he said: "I just want to stay healthy and be happy".

The survey, conducted by the Merdeka Center for the New Straits Times, found “a stable and positive voter support for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the Barisan Nasional government”.

It said that the public confidence in the PM and the government remained stable and positive despite some major concerns.

The survey – polled among 1,024 respondents – indicated that Malaysians were concerned on economy, public safety and corruption.

One in five respondents had listed price hikes, the rising cost of living, jobs and other economic issues as the "most important problem affecting Malaysia today".

Crime and public safety came in as the second biggest concern while the third biggest concern was corruption.

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong] : …..Tuan Yang di-Pertua, saya ingin menyentuh satu perkara tentang Kementerian Pelajaran iaitu sekolah-sekolah mubaligh seperti Convent, La Salle, Methodist dan sebagainya.

Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading] : [Bangun]

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]
: Silakan Yang Berhormat bagi Sri Gading.

Timbalan Yang di-Pertua [Datuk Dr. Yusof bin Yacob]: Ya, Yang Berhormat bagi Sri Gading.

Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: Bagi saya sudah tidak terkejut, Yang Berhormat bagi Parit Sulong, cerita ini… [Disampuk] Bukan soal biasa. Soalnya kenapa boleh berlaku seperti ini? Satu. Hari Raya yang lepas, saya diberitahu oleh seorang bapa, waktu Aidilfitri disambut, sekolah jenis-jenis ini tidak ditutup. Terima kasih.

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Bukan sahaja patung, tetapi Ahli-ahli Yang Berhormat pergilah, tengoklah salib Kristian diletakkan di depan-depan sekolah.
Adakah audit-audit dilaksanakan?

and i received this from a forwarded email:

Below is the translation of the hansard at the Third Meeting of The Fourth Session of Eleventh Parliament (Dewan Rakyat) on Monday, 29 October 2007 as seen at http://www.parlimen.gov.my/hindex/pdf/DR-29102007.pdf – pages 143-144.

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Yang Di-Pertua, I would like to touch on a matter regarding the Ministry of Education, which are Christian missionary schools like Convent, La Salle, Methodist, and so forth. I was made to understand that the Board of Directors at these schools are partially administered by churches in foreign countries, for example in the Vatican City. I was also made to understand that the application to build a 'surau' in some of these schools had to go through the approval of these Board of Directors whereby they are partially administered by the church. Therefore, it shames me that the school administrations are still controlled by the church. I was also made to understand that many Muslim parents send their kids to these schools, and that they have complained that sometimes, the school is started with church songs. I do not know if this is true, but what I discovered from these parents are the display of religious symbols. I feel disappointed that in an Islamic country, Malaysia, if I go to a convent school, the statue of St. Mary is displayed in the front of the school.

Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: [Stands up]

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Please proceed, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.

Timbalan Yang di-Pertua [Datuk Dr. Yusof bin Yacob]: Yes, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.

Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: I am not shocked at all, Yang Berhormat for Parit Sulong. It's not just a simple question. The question is, why has this happened? One. During the last Hari Raya, I was told by a father, when Aidilfitri was celebrated, these types of schools were not closed. Thank you.

Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Not only statues, but fellow Yang Berhormat, go and see for yourselves, Christian crosses are displayed in front of schools. I do not understand the Ministry of Education, did the officers not see that, or is it our policy to allow such a thing? Nevertheless, I, as a responsible person to my religion, race, and country, I state my views that these statues need to be demolished, these crosses need to be destroyed and church influences in these schools need to be stopped. Also, the funds that are collected at these schools. Do we have a report? If possible, the ministry should reveal the funds for these schools. I was made to understand that these schools are also sponsored by the church.
