Earlier, Rhina Bhar quit Gerakan accusing the party of discrimination against the Indians.  Now, Gerakan replies saying no such thing. In fact, they point out that 2 Senators from Gerakan are Indians, and one of them is a deputy minister as well (though we have to note that the appointment for deputy post came after the rest of Gerakan candidates lost).

They also point out that Rhina got a number of posts and recognitions while in Gerakan, and the actual reason for her resignation is due to  disappointment for not being selected as senator again or nominated as election candidate. Hmm…that paints her as a politician who wants positions. Or she needs the posts to serve better? Could she have been a better election candidate compared to other Gerakan candidates? » Read more: Gerakan denies allegations by Rhina

Too all the teachers out there, wishing you all a Happy Teachers Day! Teaching is a passion that need to continuously be recharged. Its a calling that only selected few can fulfill. Its a energy sapping endeavour of which pre-requisites are lots of patience and willingness to listen.

Its a thankless vocation at times, getting brickbrats from parents and the public. But its the one title that elicits respect and admiration from many.

May you continue to teach well !

Spotlight: He may be blind but he can see a smile and hear many whispers

THE prank may have been mean but M. Thavasothy Pillai, who is blind, took his Teachers Day joke in good faith.  On that day some years back, the SMK Taman Petaling class that Thavasothy was about to teach had switched with a class next door to fool the 56-year-old.

But the wise man could sense something fishy when he did not hear the familiar sounds of his students when they replied to his greeting. Far from being angry, he laughed with them and told them their game was up. » Read more: Happy Teachers Day

A question from Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) on the New Economic Policy (NEP) stirred up a row in Parliament today when the opposition accused him to have prepared the answer for a minister.  The opposition MPs made the noisy protest during the question session this morning after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Amirsham A Aziz was seen reading out a prepared answer to a supplementary question from Khairy. Khairy, in his original question, has asked whether the government is planning to change existing policies which were formulated based on the NEP spirit, especially those related to assisting the bumiputera, in line with the opposition’s call to reject the policy.

Answering, Amirsham said the government will continue with policies based on the NEP, which was implemented in 1970, as it will help to ensure an equal participation of different races in the economy if the NEP spirit is achieved.  “The government has no plans to change the policies formulated based on the NEP spirit which is aimed to enhance the standard of socio-economy not only for the bumiputeras but also the Indians, the indigenous people and the minorities in Sabah and Sarawak,” said the minister. » Read more: NEP to stay

This was one of the hot topic in Kapar, something that MP at that time, MIC’s Komala could not solve. Pre-election, it was a foregone conclusion that the Indian votes will go to current ruling state government.

Whatever it is, justice should be served. The folks who toiled the land should have been given a chance to own it first. Their curses will not let the families who took over the land to have a happy life.

I remember the folks even demonstrated, but were threatened with arrest. In fact legal action were taken against the TOL holders. However, Malay Mail and Sun highlighted this issue quite prominently, creating awareness among the public.
