More allegations on the Kampar bridge tragedy

A four-hour public inquiry held by the PR investigation committee produced more shocks. Malaysiakini reported that about 50 people. mainly parents,  attended the inquiry.

One of the victim’s father said:

Lorry driver T Nathan, 44, who lost his 11-year-old daughter Dina Deve in the incident, demanded for the camp’s closure.

The visibly distraught father said he did not want the same fate to befall other parents.

“The lives of my daughter and her friends were sacrificed needlessly in the name of the 1Malaysia concept of (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) which is a political stunt to fool Malaysians.

“My daughter would be still alive if not for the 1Malaysia concept camp,” he added.

Nathan cited seven reasons as to why the camp should be closed. They were:

1. There is a durian tree inside the compound of camp and there is a danger of the fruits falling on the children and killing them.

2. There is a six feet deep pond filled with greenish smelly water located in the compound which participants cross over using ropes.

3. There is a one-foot high broken wire squared maze on the ground where the children have to jump from one square to another to reach the other end of the maze. There is a danger that the children might hurt themselves in jumping from these broken wire squares.

4. The area of the 1Malaysia camp across the river is too small to accommodate the 298 pupils.
5. The area of the present camp is a former Orang Asli burial ground.

6. There is no proper water supply to the camp and the children had to break the closed water pipe to quench their thirst. [wah! this is serious!!!]

7. There is no proper lighting for the camping area.

Met later, Nathan told Malaysiakini that when he went looking for his daughter on the other side of the river on that fateful night, he saw that the camp tents were only about five feet from the edge of the river bank.

According to him, the camp authorities quickly dismantled the tents located near the river after the bridge collapsed.

More serious is the comment by some of the children:

Meanwhile, some of the children who attended the camp told the inquiry that they were the ones who threw the life-jackets to the 19 pupils who fell into the water and not the teachers as reported in the media.

They added that the life-jackets were kept in a storeroom away from the bridge.

Committee chairman assemblyman Sivakumar said that the contractor did not get permission from the relevant authorities with regards to building the bridge and the main reason it collapsed was because the foundation was weak.

Speaking to reporters later, Sivakumar said that the committee could not meet up with the director of the Perak state education co-curriculum centre situated in Pangkor Island as the state education director, the Kinta Selatan district education officer and the co-curriculum director were urgently called up by the Education Ministry to Putrajaya on Friday.

I still remember the trouble we went through to get an idea of matching colors for the house. I used some of the freely available tools in the Net, like EzyPaint which was very useful in choosing (and also avoiding) colors.

Good to read that Jotun has provided a tool as well, the Color Advisor. All you gotta do is taken a picture of your room and upload it into the net.  Oh ya, you have to register first with a valid email address. I didn’t try it, but looks like fun. Its available in English, “Malaysia” and Chinese, but no Tamil.  Tak-1Malaysia 🙂

Betul ke ni?

The government has rolled out an advanced national communications infrastructure by wiring up 1.2 million households and business premises with fibre-optics and enabling all internet subscribers to receive a fast speed of between 10 MBps (Megabytes per second) to 1 GBps (Gigabytes per second).

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in his opening remarks at the MSC International Advisory Panel (IAP) meeting here today said, the high speed broadband network will create a platform to develop future ICT applications, while providing the people, businesses and government agencies with a competitive boost via cutting edge communications.

MyKasih Program

This is an interesting concept due to the idea that every single sen of donation will be fully transfered to the recipients, no hanky-panky stuff. The recipients can use their MyKad account to purchase groceries directly from selected sellers. No use of cash. So, donors can contribute without worry, and the Foundation aligns with local NGOs to identify the needy.

A good project indeed!

Their website is http://www.mykasih.com.my

MYKASIH Foundation reaches out to more members of the community in the Klang Valley with the launch of its MyKasih – AmBank Group Community Programme in Sentul.

This is the fourth of such initiative by MyKasih Foundation following the launch of similar programmes earlier this year in Selayang, Puchong and Jinjang.

The success of these programmes has attracted a new corporate sponsor to step forward.

MyKasih Foundation chairman Ngau Boon Keat said MyKasih was a programme targeted at the poor members of society.

“The programme is more than just about subsidising the purchase of essential groceries. It also incorporates financial literacy courses and skills training for the recipients.”

“A corporate sponsor, in this case, AmBank Group, has entrusted MyKasih with their contribution.

“Our non-profit organisation partner in Sentul, the Lions Club, helped select the recipient families,” Ngau said at the launch.

“Funds are channelled to the housewife of each recipient family as a monthly allowance in her MyKasih account.

“The housewife will be able to buy selected essential grocery items using just her MyKad and a PIN. The transaction is convenient and safe as no cash changes hands.

“Instead of just receiving handouts, these families are able to make their own purchasing decisions. And as a result, a sense of independence and pride is instilled,” he added.

AmBank Group is donating RM50,000 towards the MyKasih programme in Sentul.

Fifty households will benefit as their spending on essential groceries will be subsidised for one year.

AmBank Group chairman Tan Sri Datuk Azman Hashim said: “Essentially, under this programme, AmBank Group will provide an allowance of RM20 per family per week to help defray the cost of essential food items.

“With the funds, the families can buy food items like rice, sugar, flour, milk and cooking oil.

“We are pleased with the method of distribution of the funds to the chosen families.

“The distribution is transparent and there is no question of abuse by any party.

“With the launch of the Sentul programme, more than 200 families will now benefit from MyKasih’s innovative food-aid programme.

“In conjunction with this, there will be a financial literacy programme where participating families will attend talks conducted by volunteers who will share their expertise and knowledge in financial management.

“This programme, we hope, will help the needy to learn how to cope with difficult times and maintain a sustainable lifestyle,” added Azman.
