Deepavali with Kids

Deepavali with Kids was held in Klang last Sunday (18 Nov 2007). The event was organised by a group of friends and their families for the last 10 years or so. UMIC were invited to sponsor some of the items and also to help out at the event, since about 250 children were expected this time.

I went there on Saturday evening to help pack the school bags full of goodies – stationery, towel, food stuff, shoe polish etc. However, most of the work were already done. We also helped to do the “thoranam” (decoration made from young coconut tree leaves) and pack gifts for children.

On Sunday morning, myself and Then reached the venue at 9.30am. Had breakfast and started with arrangement and allocation of groceries to be distributed to the various groups. Then, there were some decoration work – putting up balloons etc. My duty was to be photographer, so i basically hung around pretending to be busy while others were huffing and puffing away 🙂

Most of the UMIC members started to arrive after 10am, while the children started arriving around 12pm in buses and vans. There were children from Klang Utama, Anbe Sivam, St Barnabas Home, Destiny Home, Padmasambava, etc. and also disabled children. 4 poor families previously identified by the organisers also attended the event.

After a brief opening ceremony, food was served. And what food it was! Nasi goreng, nuggets, chicken burger, mee goreng, fried chicken, sausages, fresh popcorn, satay and candy floss to name a few. They kids dug in and had a great meal. At the same time, we had a clown who went around entertaining the children. But i think what the children loved the most were the two air-filled playpen. Kids were jumping up and down, really lost in their own little worlds!

Then some of the children danced and sang, and were rewarded with prizes by the organisers. Amidst all this, the superbikers came! They took the children for a ride around the block, and left the kids wanting for more. The bikers were sporting enough to take nearly all the children around, taking turns with their bikes.

Following this was a special appearance by ChaCha the clown magician, who entertained the kids with his antics. The rain made us move under the canopies and ChaCha continued his show.

After that it was gift session where every child was given a gift. Finally, schools bag were handed over to the children and representatives from the homes took the provisions.

The event ended at around 4.15pm. The organisers then cleaned up the area and most of the left by 5.30pm.

Thanks to UMICians – Rajj, Mr Gopal, Then, Mamba, Muru@Ritesh, Shirley, Ananthi, Guru, Ms Rahimah, Capt and Mrs Asohan, Mr and Mrs Kannan, and Perumal for helping out with this event.

Thanks too to the organisers for extending the invitation to UMIC to take part in this year’s Deepavali with Kids. Hope to have the same fun next year!

Chukai Kemaman

Cherating is quite near to Kemaman which is in the state of Terengganu. The arch (above) announcing the border is along the road to Chukai town. We went to Kemaman in the evening while staying at Impiana, and managed to find a handful of chinese shops and had dinner at Ah Siong Restaurant. Then was surprised to see the KFC there. I think the picture below explains why.

We also had breakfast on the next day at Hai Peng Coffee with Thirumila and her husband. We dropped by at their place before returning to the hotel.

Cherating Turtle Santuary

The Cherating Turtle Santuary is located along Cherating Beach, Km45 Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman, just next to Club Med. Its a government owned centre officially named as Pusat Penerangan dan Santuari Penyu Cherating (Cherating Turtle Sanctuary and Information Centre) and comes under the Department of Fisheries.

The place was quiet, and we were the only visitors there. It is a traditional wooden Malay architectural building, and there were 3 workers at the front desk. Entrance is free.

We went there in the morning and were welcome by an official who encouraged us to visit the mini musuem on turtles and other sea inhabitants. He also took the trouble to show us little hatchlings, and asked us to return at night…coz that’s when they release the turtles in the sea! And the public can join in too!

We spent about half an hour there, and promised to return later at night.

We came back at 10pm and joined about 30 other visitors. Most of the tourists were part of a tour group from Singapore. There were about 3 other families, and some couples as well. First, there was a video show on the turtle conservation efforts in Malaysia, sponsored by HSBC. The video lasted for about 20 minutes and was quite informative.

Then came the turtles. the worker bought them in a blue basin. There were about 30 of them, all eager and excited by the call of the ocean. According to the staff, the turtles can hear the ocean waves and will be guided by the sound and moon light to reach the sea. The turtles are released into the sea when they are about 4 days old.

The staff led us to the beach, which is a 3.5km long protected area. We lined up along the beach and squatted. After that, each of us were given a turtle and taught how to hold them carefully, lest we end up squeezing them. Those feisty fellas were squirming to be released, and tried to huff and puff their way out. Then said it felt “geli” (squirmish) to hold the turtles. On the count of 3, all of us released our baby turtles on the sandy beach. The race has begun! The turtles sped away, guided by the ocean lullaby and moonlight. I think mine was the first to reach the sea, and was engulfed away by the waves, much like a mother embraces her child.

We waited till the last one entered the sea. It was a very touching moment indeed to see those turtles returning back to their home.

According to the staff, only 2% of the turtles have a chance of survival, so we can only pray that they make it.

This turtle releasing activity happens daily, so visitors to Cherating should not miss this.

In case you are wondering on the absence of photos at the beach, we are not allowed to take photos/videos while at the beach since the light will disrupt the turtles. All photos were taken while at the hall.

We stayed behind to take some shots of the night scene at the beach and left the place at about 11pm.
