Affected by fuel price hike

You can say that I’m one of citizens directly impacted by the prike hike due to fuel price increase. Renovation, material and electrical/house items prices increased by 20-30% after July 5th. The Star reports that:

A house that cost RM100,000 to build will now cost about RM130,000 with the prices of all types of building materials up by 15% to 30% across the board.

Steel Bars: Now RM4,100 per tonne compared to RM3,500 in June.

Cement: Now RM13.45 a bag compared to RM10.95 last month.

Bricks: RM0.245 each compared to RM0.22 previously.

Ready mix concrete: RM190 per cubic metre compared to RM160 last month.

Copper: RM28,275 per tonne now compared to RM3900 three years ago.

Prices of other building materials such as sand have also gone up by 25%, quarry products by 30% and tiles by 22%.

As for me, costs for renovation and buying equipments/items increased about 20-30%. Bankrupt la 🙁
Not only that, from my experience in the last two weeks (bargain hunting), there’s fear among the shop owners (mainly Chinese) that people won’t spend more freely. They are repeating the mantra “book now, price will increase soon”. This creates a fear in consumers to buy in bulk or make deposits to secure current prices.

Prices that affected include:

  • Tiles
  • Installation for air-cond units
  • sinks
  • biscuits
  • processed poultry items
  • ice cream
  • KFC
  • cooking oil (corn)
  • eating out at indian restaurants

Nominated for Manya Bloggers Awards by MIC

Well, this is indeed surprising! Got a call yesterday that yours truly (ehem…) is one of the nominees. In two categories pulak! Hmmm…so paisye…shy le. Me…popular??? 🙂

The organisers did inquire cautiously if I don’t mind being part of the contest (well, that what it looks like to me) organised by MIC. You know, being a blogger means you are either one or all of the following – jobless, stupid, a primate, housewives, or anti-everything. Well, I’m always supportive of any activities that is for the good of the community. I hope this even is not misused or misinterpreted in the future to say youths or bloggers support MIC. I’m sure the organisers know better than to cross swords with bloggers 🙂 So, with the noble intentions (“We want to encourage more Malaysian Indians to blog and share information on the Internet”) outlined by Putera MIC chief in mind, I graciously accept my nomination, even though I’m pretty sure popular is not the word to describe this blog 🙂

Anyway, I disagree with Kamalanathan that bloggers only focus on sensitive issues only because “news sells”. I actually think that the reason for talking about sensitive issues is because there’s not many avenues to discuss it openly and properly. The media does not do the job, public are threatened not to talk in the name of “national security”, and also because many of the “sensitive issues” have elements of crime, discrimination, infringement of human rights, perversion of natural justice or plain lies. » Read more: Nominated for Manya Bloggers Awards by MIC

Cameron Highlands Day 3, buying plants

After a tiring day out the day before, we got up a bit late and packed up. Time to leave the cool environment and head back to dusty and hot KL 🙁 Took break fast at the Indian restaurant in Brinchang. Mee goreng was quite tasty, but their tea lacked oomph. Then, time for shopping. Specifically, we wanted to get some potted plants for our house. First stop was along the area after Equatorial Hotel (Not Kea Farms, but the other way, leading towards Simpang Pulai). There are some rows of shops which sell plants and vegetables. We bought some goldcrest plants there.

We had to stop at Raju Hill Strawberry Farm to get some strawberries and also their famous strawberry milkshake (one of the reasons why went to Cameron Highlands in the first place!)

After ending Day 1 on a happy note, we started the second day with a search for breakfast. Finally took noodles at a Chinese restaurant at Brinchang. Our first stop was the Big Red Strawberry Farm located at Brinchang town itself. Its near the Cactus Valley and across the road from the pasar malam site. This place was set up about 3 years ago, and it primarily exports salad to overseas markets. The also sell many kinds of flower plants. While were there, there were construction work to expand the area. According to one of the workers, lots of tourists visit this place. They plan to built a car park and more plantation area. The souvenirs are a bit expensive compared to other place, but the area is big and cooling.

Cameron Highlands Day 1 at Cameron Valley and Smokehouse Hotel

Cameron Highlands beckoned again. I was there in early April and managed to visit Sungai Palas Boh Tea Centre. Last week, I had more time to go around since it was a mini vacation. Then wanted to get her hands on strawberry milkshake, so off we went to Cameron Highlands.

As usual, I took the Simpang Pulai exit. Its about 50++km from the toll exit to Equatorial, and takes slightly more than an hour’s drive.

Our first stop was just before Equatorial Hotel. We stopped at Cameron Valley Tea Shop. I had tea (RM3!) and we took some pictures of the tea plantation there. Nothing great there. The lady at the counter was not cheerful nor tourist-friendly enough (err…maybe we didn’t look like one!). All my questions received one line answers. Perhaps need to send them for training – how to promote the business and Cameron Highlands.
