A small town that wakes with the dawn

By FAZLEENA AZIZ

At the crack of dawn, Kampung Baru Batu 14, a small town at 14th mile Puchong, slowly awakens.

At 5am, traders at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) wet market were already busy preparing to start their businesses, while dedicated Hindus began their days with prayers at the temples. The Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple beckons early birds with music. Kuthu villakhu (lights) were lit while traditional pooja (prayer) was done.

Roll call: Students arriving at SJK (C) Han Ming for the afternoon session.

Housewives with their shopping from the wet market were among the villagers and outsiders who dropped by for breakfast, and perhaps a cup of coffee to kick off their day.

Chen Kaw, 64, who has called Kampung Baru Batu 14 home since he was born, has witnessed the development of the village throug the years; the most significant one, perhaps, being the change from wooden houses to brick houses.

“I welcome the development. The upgrading works within the village or the mushrooming of industrial areas nearby has brought prosperity,” said the active member of the village development committee.

A few steps away from Chen’s coffee shop is SJK (C) Han Ming, which is believed to have stood there for more than 80 years.

Devotions: Devotees can be seen performing their daily rituals at the Hindu and Chinese temples in the area.

Around noon, kids arrive in private cars, vans or school buses, most of whom appeared energetic and ready to absorb new knowledge. Another round of traffic congestion along Jalan Masjid in the evening marked the end of school for the day, but it certainly did not mean the slowdown of activities at the village.

The village, well known for its Puchong Yong Tau Fu Restaurant, attracts a steady stream of outsiders to savour the Chinese cuisine for dinner, or even supper.Just a street across, one can find Restoran Puchong Lim that has been there since 1983, always ready to whip up meals with snake, squirrel, etc, that are believed to bring health benefits to eaters. While the night slowly crept in, the whole village became quieter under the black blanket, and the harmonious sound of traditional Chinese percussion echoed through the night.

Inside the SJK (C) Han Ming compound, members of the lion dance team under the Zhong Hua Welfare Association were practising the music that accompanies the lion dance.

At the same time, Muslim children could be seen walking home in the dark after their Quran reading class at the Kariah Batu 14 Mosque, the only mosque in the area.At about 11pm when most parts of the village were quietly falling asleep, activities were bustling at the Kim Ying Temple.

Taoists were busy preparing to celebrate the birthday of one of their gods, the Mao Shan Fa Shi, while devotees were queuing up to receive blessings from the god through a medium.

Daily life: Life may be slow in old Puchong, but the residents like it, while at the same time welcoming development that has come their way.

Resident Shahrul Salam, 27, who has been living there for almost a decade, thinks that the old Puchong is pretty mundane most of the time.

“Everyone goes to Puchong Perdana and Bandar Puchong Jaya, where there are attractions like the IOI Mall, 24-hour restaurants and entertainment outlets.

“Things are not so ‘happening’ around here but we like it the way it is,” he said.

we all have wishes, let them be big or small, grand or simple. since our 50th independence day is just few hours away, i thought of listing out my wishes for this wonderful day in our country.

1. removal of the words “gender”, “race” and “religion” in any language in all application/registration/survey/entry forms used in our country except for those that requires specific characteristics e.g. imam must be a muslim.

2. free education up to secondary school for all students regardless of type of school and location.

3. improved, seamless, reliable, energy-saving, less-polluting, and efficient public transportation system throughout the country which reduces the need for privately owned vehicles.

4. to reduce dependency on foreign workers by training the locals to be skilled.

5. to provide fair distribution of services and benefits to all deserving citizens based equal rights.

6. to reduce working hours and encourage more time for families to bond together.

7. to have sets of law that provides access to information and guarantees freedom of rights of individuals.

wishful thinking…you say?

what do you wish?

Persona, the latest Proton model, has received strong response from consumers with over 7,000 units booked to date since the Aug 15 launch.

“This is more than a three-fold increase from the pre-launch booking of 2,200 units,” said Proton Holdings Bhd’s managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

“We are happy with the response received thus far. We are also touched by our consumers’ belief in us,” Syed Zainal Abidin said, adding that 2,200 booked the Persona without seeing it.

“Now we have over 7,000 bookings. On behalf of Proton, I would like to thank all those who have and are continuing to support us,” he said in a statement today.

Syed Zainal Abidin attributed the enthusiastic response to the quality of Persona, a 1.6-litre sedan.
“Quality issues previously brought up by consumers have been addressed in the Persona,” he said.

The Persona, the national carmaker’s fifth fully-built model, is a personification of Proton’s new philosophy of producing the right car for the right market at the right price, Syed Zainal Abidin said.

The car is considered the most competitively-priced model in the 1,600cc category, with prices ranging from RM44,999 to RM55,800.

Syed Zainal Abidin said the Persona was developed with the Proton i-Care commitment to improve quality aspects, from design, styling and production to sales and after-sales.

“We want our consumers to know that we are not merely paying lip-service to the ‘You Can Count On Us’ promise but every Proton employee, myself included, will strive towards delivering this promise,” he said. — BERNAMA

quite tiring to set up Thenmozly’s blog. Upgraded from a old version and fixed the “unable to comment” problem. Currently using a theme from wpthemeporter, but will be changing it soon. Also added Share This from Alex King’s site, just like the one on my blog. Quite nifty and saves space.

Hope she’ll find it more acceptable now and blog often 🙂

I was tagged by Rani. Her topic is “Tell me what you'll do with a $ 1Million (1, 000, 000)”.

And following her lead, I'll conveniently convert the US moolah into good old Ringgit Malaysia, which is about RM3.4 million. So, after a long and hard thought, I'll do the following:

1m – set up a trust fund for tamil schools and use the investment profits to help as many schools as possible
1m – set up a family trust fund to support future generation and family/relatives
500k – buy a house (preferably semi-dee), or buy a land and build a house.
400k – invest in commercial property
100k – invest in stocks
150k – get a car for wife. she has a thing for toyotas nowadays, so probably the altis or camry.
50k – send wife for around the world tour for few months. well, i'll try to join 🙂
85k – get a car.
15k – get some camera lenses and camera
20k – spend for parents and relatives
20k – get a home entertainment system
60k – settle housing loan

and now i'm tagging Then, Mahen, Amutha and Praveen.
Up to them to change the topic or continue with the same one!
