Hopefully they can work with Hindu Sangam and other existing organisations, and not splinter the community further. Can focus on reducing conversion cases, help to poor community and also classes in temples/schools.

PRESENTLY, many questions are being raised by Hindu devotees related to Hindu Saiva philosophy and practices. There is also a lack of understanding as well as confusion over the rituals practised.

In view of this, president of Malaysian Saiva Religious Council Dr. A. Nagappan said the council has been formed to serve the Hindu community .

“The aim of the council is strictly educational and its objectives are to widen knowledge of Hindu Saiva philosophy and to clarify as well as reform practises,” he said.

This is in line with the need for new awareness for the present times. The newly registered council will be holding classes and forums based on a structured and scheduled curriculum.

The esteemed Seervalarseer Sivapprakasa Thesiga Paramaachariyar, the 23rd Gurumahasannithanam of Thiruvaavaduthurai Aatheenam will officially inaugurate the council on Aug 14 at the Sithi Vinayagar Temple Hall, Petaling Jaya.

Membership is RM10 and annual fee is RM30. All Hindus are welcome to attend and seek knowledge and understanding of their religion. Breakfast and lunch will be served

Temples in Section 19 PJ get land from developer

One good thing is that the developer is made to fulfill their application conditions. However, I’m not sure of the pro and cons of allowing developer to keep the lease and the impact of perpetual lease agreement between land owner and temple. Who will determine the rate for rent of the land (if got any rent)? Is it possible the land given free, but later may be charged to temple? Can the land be revoked and used for other purpose by the land owner?

TWO temples that have been operating for more than 40 years in Section 19, Petaling Jaya, will be allocated 0.09ha (10,000sq ft) of land in the same area.

The Tow Boo Keong Taoist Temple and the Arulmigu Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu Temple had in May received notices from a developer of nearby condominium project to move out of the land that they have been using as places of worship at the former squatter area.

During a press conference at the Hindu temple on Saturday, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said Petaling Jaya city councillors had the planning approval for the Ameera condominium on March 29, 2007.

“One of the conditions in the planning approval signed by developer Selangor Dredging Bhd (SDB) states that they must provide 10,000 sq ft of land to each temple so we have asked them to comply,” said Pua.

Also present were temple chairmen Tan Kam Piew and Tanasakaran Rengasamy and MBPJ councillors R. Selvarajan, Mak Khuin Weng and Jeyaseelan Anthony.

Pua said after discussions with the developer, SDB had agreed to give 0.09ha to each temple but would be keeping the land title.

“The temples will enter into a perpetual lease with the land owner and it is now up to the committees of both temples to negotiate the location of the plots with the developer,” said Pua.

He said the DAP had a team of lawyers who could oversee the negotiations but he advised the committees to appoint their own to finalise the agreement.

Tanasakaran said they were relieved that they would not have to relocate the temple and his committee would be meeting the developers to discuss the matter.

SDB communications and corporate affairs manager Yeoh Guan Jin confirmed that they would be allocating a 0.09ha to each temple to build their place of worship and SDB would hold the land titles.

This is a new initiative by Hindu Sangam. The details are available at their website:

http://www.hindusangam.org.my/our-projects/195

Basically they aim to collect RM1 per Hindu per month (or total of RM12 per year). Target is 30% of the estimated 1.75 million Hindus in Malaysia. The donations will be used to fund projects and activities under their Hindu Renaissance Action Plan (HRAP).

Of course it goes without saying that transparency on the donations collected must be enforced.

Interested? You can donate to their CIMB account 1402-0176894-059 (Malaysia Hindu Sangam). Their donation form [pdf] is at:

TO commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda (1863-2013), Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia observed the release of the ‘Arise, Awake!’ postal stamp on Aug 2.

The stamp takes inspiration from the holy man’s famous quote “Arise, Awake! Stop not till the goal is reached”.

Centre president Swami Supriyananda said with the release of the stamp by Pos Malaysia, the mission was gearing up to celebrate Vivekananda’s 150 years in a fit and proper manner appropriate to his universally respected stature as a world teacher, thinker, leader, prophet, pathfinder and humanity benefactor.

In line with that, a series of Personality Development programmes for youths through Vivekananda’s life and message are being planned for two years, 2012 and 2013, all over Malaysia.

Supriyananda said the mission had lined up the set of programmes to help them with inner confidence and character.

“The half-day free programmes will be starting next month, and they will focus on physical, mental and spiritual health. We go to gyms to develop the body, and to temples to perform rituals, but a positive mentality also needs to be built. When you build character, you have everything,” he said after the event held at the mission’s centre in Petaling Jaya.

Also present at the event were Ramakrishna Mission, Belue Math, India general secretary Swami Prabhananda, and Toh Puan Uma Sambanthan.

Canteen closed at Ipoh GH during fasting month?

August 11th, 2011

Surprised to read this situation which was report last week, but then, looking at the way things are going, not surprised anymore. Can anyone update if the canteen is still closed? Does this infringe on the rights of anyone? Of course, you can say that one can find food at other places.  But then, why should one be forced to look for food in other places? And this is in Ipoh, not some 90% Muslim dominated area. Sign of things to come?

If non-Muslim entrepreneurs are given opportunities to take up a booth or two at the hospital at reasonable price,  I think can avoid this issue.  The Muslim operators would have difficulty running business on fasting month since majority (let’s say 60%) of their customers won’t be around.

Malaysia Nanban reported that many non-Muslims who visited the Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital in Ipoh were shocked to find the canteen closed temporarily for the current fasting month.

Tronoh state assemblyman V. Sivakumar who visited the hospital yesterday said the closure of the canteen had affected the non-Muslims, especially the in-patients, visitors and employees of the hospital, as they had to look for food elsewhere.

The hospital’s management, he said, must also cater to the needs of other races.
