FYI: the school in question is SJKT Ladang Tanah Pancis.

A 63-YEAR-OLD Tamil school in Tanah Pancis in Rompin, Negri Sembilan, will be renamed after former deputy health minister and MIC vice-president Datuk K. Pathmanathan.

Its headmaster Rajan Gopal said the decision was made as Pathmanathan, who died in 2001, had made huge contributions to the state, country and the Indian community, reported Makkal Osai.

The renaming ceremony to be held on Dec 3 will be attended by special envoy with Ministerial rank for Infrastructure to India and South Asia Datuk Seri S. Samy Velu.

The estate-born Pathmanathan was the Teluk Kemang MP for four terms from 1974 and had actively fought for the rights of Malaysian Indians, especially in the fields of education.

When he headed MIC’s education bureau, he was credited with getting more places for Indian students in public universities.

He was also the founding chairman of Manipal Medical College in Malacca and was instrumental in getting both the governments of Malaysia and India to agree to a twinning programme between the college and an Indian university.

Do spread the word around. Hope the schools, NGOs and temples are aware of this.

All state MIC liaison committees have until Dec 31 to submit applications for Federal Government allocations to assist Tamil schools as well as Indian places of worship and NGOs in the respective states.

MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel said the deadline was to enable funds to be disbursed next year.

After receiving the applications, MIC’s headquarters would prepare a budget for allocations to be given out, either once or twice a year.

“It is difficult when they keep asking us for funds all year round.

“We cannot be going to the Prime Minister’s Department every now and then asking for allocations on their behalf,” he said after presenting RM185,000 in federal aid to six temples, a church and an NGO at the Penang state library auditorium here yesterday.

Palanivel, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said once he knew the amount, it would be easier to obtain the allocation.

He said the money was usually for minor projects such as repairs and extensions, upgrading of toilets, electrical wiring, water pipes and drainage systems as well as for community programmes.

He encouraged Indian community leaders to contact MIC division leaders in their respective areas to submit proposal papers for the projects they planned to carry out.

“Some temples and NGOs miss out on the allocations because they submit their applications late and all the funds have been disbursed,” he said.

no circular on halal food in vernacular school canteens

On one hand, if you want to show respect to the rights of the Muslim students, then must provide halal food as per the Ministry guideline. But if you insist “only halal” food, then you are denying the rights of the other students. Being communities from religions that respect everyone, the best is to have a section of the canteen at the vernacular schools to cater for Muslim students and staff. There’s no problem with Tamil schools as they don’t serve pork nor beef based products.  So, good thing that there’s not such circulars from MOE curtailing the food types.

I wonder, how many schools cater for the non-Muslims students by offering the respective food cooked by own community – at least can also help the small operators. Wonder if the ministry has such guidelines.

The best is to offer a variety, as long as the students are aware and don’t mix utensils.

I still remember the char kuey teow in my school, prepared by the Chinese uncle. Delicious!

There is no directive from the Education Ministry that only halal food be sold at all Chinese and Tamil primary schools, said its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said while under the ministry’s guidelines, canteen operators must provide halal food if there was a sufficient number of Muslim students in the school concerned, Chinese and Tamil school canteen operators could also offer non-halal food to their non-Muslim students.

“However, in practice, school canteen operators usually offer pork-free food,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby Wednesday.

Dr Wee was responding to a vernacular news report stating that a circular was recently issued by the Negri Sembilan Education Department to schools in the state that only halal food be sold by canteen operators.

Based on initial feedback, he said Negri Sembilan’s Education Director had confirmed that no such directive had been issued.

1191 Tamil school students get 7As

A total of 1191 students from Tamil schools got 7As in UPSR this year, a vast increase compared to 808 last year (increased 383 or 32%).  Consider the relatively bad conditions and lack of facilities in many schools, this is a very good achievement.

SJKT Simpang Lima is the best school with about 51 (I think, since heard it on radio vaguely) students with 7As. Total 7As students in Selangor is 330.

Kudos to the students, teachers and school management, PTAs, donors, wellwishes, state and federal governments, and the political parties for the support wherever possible.

I hope to get the overall stats on passing rates as well, and hopefully it will spur more parents to consider Tamil schools.

Tamil school land sold?

Any idea which school this is? There’s no mention of when the land was sold either. What to do with 0.2ha?

I believe it could be one the following schools which are in the same district:

  1. SJKT NIBONG TEBAL
  2. SJKT LDG BYRAM
  3. SJKT LDG SEMPAH
  4. SJKT TASEK PERMAI
  5. SJKT LDG CHANGKAT
  6. SJKT SUNGAI BAKAP
  7. SJKT LADANG VALDOR
  8. SJKT LDG KRIAN
  9. SJKT LDG TRANSKRIAN
  10. SJKT BATU KAWAN
  11. SJKT LADANG JAWI

MALAYSIAN Nanban claimed that a major portion of a 1.4ha land donated to a Tamil school has been fraudulently transferred to the names of two individuals in Nibong Tebal.

It said the land was donated by a well-wisher in 1959 and six people were appointed as trustees.

However, the school received a High Court order saying that 1.02ha had been purchased by the duo, leaving the school with only 0.2ha.

A shocked Parents Teachers Association president P. Rajendran sought clarification from the Pakatan Rakyat state government in Penang.

Deputy Chief Minister P. Ramasamy said irresponsible individuals had allegedly misappropriated the land which rightfully belonged to the school.

He said there was a need to check whether the land was sold with the consent of the trustees or with the interference of “certain people”.

Rajendran called on the state government to help reclaim the land.
