Naturally, the question arises- what was their earlier focus? Well, its never late to begin.
Among the things Puteri MIC can consider is:
– working with NGOs and academicians for initial data gathering activities.
– working with NGOs, religious bodies, state agencies/depts, police, hospitals, schools, and lawyers to get more feedback and provide avenue for the target group to respond.
– publicity channels to ensure that the target group is aware of such help.
– think of creative ways to get their points across. Talks and more talks may not work unless the speakers can really bring a change in thinking among the youths.
– build relationship with companies/organisations than can offer job for single parents – manufacturing, sales, handicraft/tourism, F & B, wellness industry, tranport etc are among the industry that can make use of more (wo)manpower.
– fight for funds from the relevant ministries. For example, they can question why MARA is to be used to channel funds to PR-led states. How are the non-Malays going to be help in this case? So, keyword is to proactive and reactive to latest issues and news.
All these need people. Puteri should focus on recruiting members and volunteers (those not interested to be members). How?
Puteri MIC zeroes in on ‘issues’
KUALA LUMPUR: Addressing the high divorce rate, teen runaways, premarital pregnancies, suicide and problems of single mothers will be Puteri MIC’s focus.
Its leader Usha Nandhini Jayaram said young Indian women facing such problems needed help.
Speaking at a forum, “Love at a Young Age”, at the MIC headquarters here yesterday, she said the movement would embark on programmes to create awareness among the target groups.
The forum saw some 30 women from various divisions in the Klang Valley speak candidly on ways to confront the issues.
“It is time society acknowledges these issues as they are happening now. We can’t ignore them forever.”
Usha said society should not look down on Indian women or blamed them in cases of suicide or attempted suicide when they failed in love or marriage.
