Problems If no Birth Cert or IC

Life is indeed full of obstacles if without such critical documents. I don’t suppose you can vote as well. Practically like an illegal immigrant, no access to education, health, legal, employment and social avenues/channels.

JPN’s MyDaftar program is being expanded with help of the SITF. Let’s see how these folks can be helped.

At two, her father left her with a family friend here but did not leave behind her birth certificate. Housewife R. Mageswary, who now claims to be 38, says she does not know her exact birthdate.

“I have never celebrated my birthday,” she sobbed, relating that the absence of a birth certificate had deprived her from getting an identity card, going to school, getting a job and travelling away from home for fear of being caught by the police.

“I do not even know how to read. I am also afraid of travelling far from my home in Segamat in case of police road block,” she said in between tears.

Desperate: Rubella and Annie holding up a document which states that Annie is not a Malaysian citizen.

Mageswary said she had tried many times, through her husband, to get her identification documents but all attempts had failed.

Life had been difficult for Mageswary and others who are in the same predicament in Labis and elsewhere.

Widow V. Rubella, 37, whose husband died four months ago, said she had to do odd jobs to support her 10-year-old daughter.

“I do not have a birth certificate nor an identification card so it is next to impossible for me to even get aid from the welfare department,” she said, adding that the birth certificate of her daughter, D. Annie and two other children also stated they are not Malaysian.

Joining the conversation, Annie said her elder brother was now in prison because he could not produce his identity card during a roadblock.

“He explained to the court about his predicament but he was still jailed,” she said, adding that her brother had been jailed several times for the same offence.

Segamat Indian Community Development Association secretary B.M. Baskaran said he has brought up such problems many times in the past 10 years.

“I have helped to resolve 15 such cases but I believe there are many more that are still unsolved,” he said.

Asked about the issue, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said the ministry would start an outreach programme to identify those who are affected by such problems.

“The programme will start after the Tenang by-election and we will handle the issues on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

Last weekend, I was at a 3-in-1 function organised by the Malaysian Tamil Writers Association:

–  introduce (free) Tamil short stories in iPad and iPhone, created by Muthu Nedumaren (creator of Sellinam)

– launch of Tamil Valthu (Praise song)

– launch of revamped Tamil Writers website.

I managed to catch the afternoon session which started with Muthu’s talk on social networks, creation of Tamil content in Apple platform (iPhone and iPad) and the need for writers to move on to the next step which is Web 2.0 and beyond. It was an interesting session which was peppered with facts and figures on Facebook usage etc.

The Song was launched by Dato’ Kanthan (ex-assemblyman). It was written by poet Sini Naina Muhammed. The poet shared his story on how the song was created. It was quite interesting as he explained about how he made changes, and the inspiration he received.

RM30k for Sri Subramaniar Temple Teluk Datuk

Good news for Teluk Datuk folks. However I’m not sure whose money it is. MCA, the president, or the federal government.

The Teluk Datok Hindu community received a gift of RM30,000 from MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek for the construction of their new temple building.

“We must remember how lucky we are that our country’s laws embrace freedom of religion,” Dr Chua said at the Sri Subramaniar temple on Wednesday.

He said that 1Malaysia was not a political slogan but embraces the fact that Malaysians comprise different races and religions.

“It is only when we have inclusive policies that take into account all races can we be called 1Malaysia,” he said.

Dr Chua urged Malaysians not take to take the country’s racial unity for granted.

“Every citizen has the responsibility to maintain peace with mutual respect and understanding for those of different cultures and sensitivities,” said Chua at the Thaipusam Musical Night organised by the temple committee.

It was held to raise funds for the new building.

Temple chairman P. Alagamali said in his speech that construction had begun in 2009.

“At the moment, it is almost half finished.

“We hope to be able to use it by the end of this year,” he said.

Also present was Kuala Langat MCA division chief Datuk Ei Kim Hock.

Hockey Goalkeeper Kumar is Asia’s Best

Congrats!

Kumar honoured as Asia’s best

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been an emotional year for national goalkeeper S Kumar. The Tampin-born suffered a huge blow with the passing of his beloved father-cum-mentor S Subramaniam during the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last year.

Nevertheless, a devastated Kumar went on to give an excellent performance during the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China a month later which saw the Malaysian team playing in the final — the same time his wife Parimalah Letchumaran gave birth to their newborn Varshan.

It was only natural for Kumar to be awarded as Asia’s Best Player by the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) during their Congress held in KL yesterday.

He inks his name in the history books as being the first Malaysian to receive the award.

“It is indeed an honour that I will cherish. I dedicate this award to my late father who encouraged me right from the beginning,” said Kumar, 32.

“Without the sacrifices of my father, I will not be here today.”

The honour was timely as Kumar has been named the best goalkeeper in eight international tournaments since the Azlan Shah Cup in 2007.

Kumar started playing hockey at the age of 15, representing SMK Tunku Besar.

His first national call up was for the Commmowealth Games 1998 training squad and first played for the country at the Brunei Sea Games a year later.

Since then he has been a regular face between the posts, having played in a string of international tournaments including the Asian Games (2002, 2006, 2010), Asia Cup (2003, 2007, 2009) and Champions Trophy (2007).

He was even selected to the Asian All-Stars team for his brilliant performances in Guangzhou.

“The next year will be difficult as Malaysia need to prepare well for the (Olympic) qualifiers but it is my dream to play in the Olympics,” he added.
