Remember Rajeshvari?

Looks like she’s back with her parents after some initial misunderstanding. After being advised, she’s suing all those relevant folks, including the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar. For RM6 million.

Perak EXCO Sivanesan is helping out.

Something new is mentioned this time. It seems the police promised to get her thumbprints after she was arrested, but never did so.

Rajeshvari claimed she had told police she was a Malay-sian and that she could not recall her identity card number as she had lost it. Police pro-mised to get her thumbprint to facilitate investigations but failed to do so. She had also informed Immigration officials that she was a Malaysian, but no action was taken.

Perak EXCO doesn’t know MIDA!

I nearly fell of my chair when I read the following:

State Industry Development and Information Committee chairman Tai Sing Ng (PKR-Kuala Sepetang) bore the brunt of it when he was ticked off by Datuk Ramly Zahari (BN-Manong) for not knowing what was Mida (Malaysian Industrial Development Authority) as it was under Tai’s portfolio.

Ramly asked a supplementary question on whether all foreign direct investments (FDI) into Perak was approved by Mida.

Seeing Tai’s puzzled look, Ramly asked Tai whether he knew what Mida was.

When Tai said he did not know, Ramly said: “Don’t know? Sorry.”

How in the world can an EXCO don’t know what is MIDA? Students learn in school itself. Worse still, this guy is the EXCO in charge of Industry Development in Perak. Like this means can close shop soon!

I label this under Crime!

Vice and gambling increasing in Perak?

Let’s look at the figures given by Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah:

  • 18% rise in arrests made on foreigners engaged in vice activities across the state this year. A total of 987 foreigners, mostly from China, some from Indonesia, Vietnam and other countries, were arrested in 305 raids conducted from January to October this year. The figures did not include the recent arrests of 36 foreign women found hiding in a special room at an entertainment outlet in Ipoh during a raid on Nov 9. This is an 18% increase on the same period last year.
  • From January to September this year, police confiscated 1,385 computers used for gambling in 125 raids in cybercafes in Perak. This is a 75% rise from the same period last year.

The police are now asking the state government to :

  • either stop issuing entertainment licences to errant operators or tighten the rules in a move to combat prostitution.
  • to make it mandatory for karaoke operators to use glass windows in each of their karaoke rooms at their outlets.

Perak Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming replies:

“If they have the evidence of operators infringing the law, the state government will give its full cooperation to the police to act against the errant operators,”

“We want to uphold the law and the matter must also be handled with the full compliance of the law,”

Looks like Pakatan Rakyat is having a problem containing such criminal activities. Or is it possible that the police have a freer hand in taking action, thus able to make more arrests and raids? Whatever it is, the numbers are not a good sign. The statistics should also be compared with other states to see if such trend exists or only unique to Perak. I can imagine that more developed states like Penang, Selangor and Johor having higher statistics.

Police attack at Bersih rally anniversary

Well, if up to 10pm there were no news, and we can see the anniversary did not attract many people, explosive news came out after midnight. While the NST did not report on police intimidation and attacks at all, The Star mentioned it in a very very light manner. As usual, the blogs are full of anger of action of the police. I provide some links below and also MK’s article. Another MK staff arrested as well. Total of 24 peopel arrested.

What is more stunning is that views of some eye witnesses that imply police were targetting some of the Indians (who may be wearing orange or Bersih t-shirt). Probably want to link HINDRAF to the gathering and make it an illegal one (it is illegal since no permit).

Also, the police seemed to pissed off with the public singing Negaraku. That’s what some wrote.

And MK article:

Riot police today dispersed about 300 people who had gathered at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre.

The police moved into the crowd just as they were singing the national anthem and getting ready to leave. Before that they have heard short speeches from several politicians.

The crowd had walked over to the PJ Civic Centre shortly after 9.30pm after they had been originally dispersed from the Padang Timur, about a kilometre away, where they had gathered to take part in a candlelight vigil.

Just as the crowd started re-gathering at the Civic Centre, a team of anti-riot squad and a water cannon truck had arrived.

Shortly afterwards the police started dispersing the crowd using their shields.

In the ensuing melee, police arrested PJ Utara member of parliament and DAP leader Tony Pua, Kampung Tunku state representative Lau Weng San and 22 others. Also arrested was Malaysiakini videographer Shukri Mohamad.

“I was shooting the water cannon truck when a policeman told me to stop that. He ordered me to hand over the camera and tape. I turned and walked away when I was arrested,” Shukri said when contacted.

Eyewitnesses said that Pua was physically manhandled and thrown into a waiting Black Maria. The police were also seen chasing the crowd into an Indian restaurant located opposite the Civic Centre.

Those arrested have been taken to the PJ police station. A small group of people have gathered outside in support of those arrested under the watchful eyes of a team of police anti-riot squad.

Candlelight vigil called off

Earlier, at about 9.35pm, a candlelight vigil organised by polls reform group Bersih was hampered by police insistence on the gathered crowd to disperse.

The vigil was to have started at 9.30pm at Padang Timur opposite Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya.

However, the police had started blocking the roads leading to the venue as early as 7pm.

And as the scheduled 9.30pm approached, the police urged the gathered crowd in the field to disperse.

The crowd had then moved into the nearby Amcorp mall, engaged in a ?wait-and-see’ game with the police.

Among those in the crowd were recently court-released ISA detainee Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu and DAP leaders Lau Weng San and Pua.

At about 9.30pm, the organisers told the crowd to disperse so as to avoid any trouble with the police.

Some of the people then decided to hold a mini-procession from the field to the PJ Civic Centre, about a kilometre away.

PKNS for Malays or for all Selangorians?

October 29th, 2008

I’m disgusted with the comments from PKNS staff-bodies and also the information revealed by MB Khalid Ibrahim. Selangor, being the most modern state, its coffers being filled by sweat and toil of all its rakyat (plus millons of foreign workers) and PKNS is for Malays? I think all those staff should be sacked. There are thousands of other Selangorians who are looking for work. Let them work for development of the state.

The worse is the racist attitude of their staff who oppose the appointment of current Finance and Corporate deputy general manager Low Siew Moi, 57, (trained accountant working for PKNS for 35 YEARS!) who will have her annual contract extended to replace the existing GM – Datuk Harun Salim, whose annual contract expires this Thursday. His contract is not extended, as he is 60. Harun retired in mid-2003 and will have to leave the government entity in compliance with the Public Services Department’s age requirement.

Low is to be given a one year contract.

According to the 6 staff bodies:

In their joint memorandum dated Oct 25 to Khalid, the staff associations said: “PKNS was established for Malays and to fulfill the Malay agenda. Because of this, the organisation needs to be led by a Malay.”

The document was signed by the respective heads of associations of senior officers, executive officers and workers; the sports and recreation club; Islamic association, and staff welfare body.

“The associations, unions and welfare bodies do not deny the capabilities of Low Siew Moi (left) in the management of finance,” they said.

“However, leading PKNS would need certain leadership criteria, among them, rapport with all staff and associations and ability to communicate with different levels of personnel.”

The memorandum stated that, as PKNS conducts activities that are spiritual in nature, its leader must understand and practice Islamic values.

“In other words, the one who will become the general manager will be the ‘imam’ for all the staff,” the signatories said.

Urging Khalid to retract Low’s appointment, they said they would only extend full support if current deputy general manager in charge of administration and development – Md Nasir Md Arshad – is promoted to general manager.

Since when is PKNS is for Malays? All Selangorians must make a police report against this seditious statements which threaten racial harmony. This is what happens when the organisation is being monopolised by certain race only. Other people don’t exist in their eyes.

This is another classic example of making use of religion for discrimination. If want to have an imam, hire one specifically la. Don’t bog down the leader with extra work. Or when it comes to religious events, ask a representative to attend. All this petty excuse of serve to increase the contempt and anger against government bodies like PKNS. Let us not go into government agencies.

The staff also issued a veiled threat to MB Khalid that they won’t support the Low if she is appointed. Isn’t that considered treason or something? The staff have a responsibilty to the rakyat, not to pick sides or decide who can lead them.

The reason given by Khalid is that they cannot afford to have both Low and Harun to retire at the same time. He said its for one year while they look for a ” bumiputra person with high calibre and ethics and someone who is committed to lead the state’s business arm.”. As Haris Ibrahim asked : Is it not enough that the individual is a person ‘with high calibre and
ethics and someone who is committed to lead the state’s business arm’? Why need to have a racist and discriminative policy? Isn’t this depriving other Selangorians of getting the job? If this is not discrimination, what is?

Khalid also revealed two other facts:

1. a group of senior officers have 30% shares in PKNS subsidiary – PKNS Infra Sdn Bhd, which will possibly lead to biased decision, cronyism, corruption, etc. Is this what PKNS’s version of Islam and spirituality all about?  Can the staff bodies answer this?

2. 75% of projects awarded by PKNS were given to non-bumiputra firms either directly or indirectly. Now, there’s two things here. Firstly, since the staff bodies boldly claim that PKNS is for Malays and Malay agenda, how can this happen? So, they are not doing their jobs (their version)? Secondly, what’s wrong with work being done by non-bumiputras? As long as the job is done correctly, people will be happy. The old way of allocating to bumiputra should be discarded. The Pakatan Rakyat government should encourage award of project based on competency, capability, track record. Don’t be like previous leadership.

If PKNS is only to serve bumiputra businessmen, then better Selangorians boycott PKNS. Why should we support racist organisations?
