MIC solves Bukit Raja estate workers problem

Samy likes to use “I” all the time. Its always about him. If he is not around, no more MIC. Samy is MIC. MIC is Samy. Anyways, congrats for solving this problem. Next election got little bit of hope now. Sime Darby also did not drag this for long, just 12 years.

A 12-year resettlement dispute between property developer and plantation giant, Sime Darby Bhd, and workers of Bukit Raja Estate in Klang, finally came to an end when both parties reached a settlement following the intervention of MIC.
MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the workers had accepted the land offered by Sime Darby to build their homes.

“I met the representatives of the workers and Sime Darby yesterday and they agreed that the workers will be provided with their agreed choice of house on the land,” he said in a statement today. Samy Vellu said Sime Darby would soon issue offer letters to the workers.

Before the last general election, Samy Vellu said he and Putera Umno chief Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim visited the estate following complaints that the Bukit Raja Tamil School was without a playground.  I requested Sime Darby to allocate a two-acre (0.8ha) land to build the playground and a two-storey building for the school,” he said. “I also asked the company to hand over the land where the school is currently located to the Education Ministry for the school to be converted into a fully-aided school.

“All the requests were agreed to by Sime Darby but the housing problem was not solved as the estate workers did not want to accept the land offered by the company. “But now the housing issue has been resolved and I urge the workers to cooperate with Sime Darby,” he added.

cream of crop?

PSD claims cream of the crop were selected for PSD scholarship, but if you read the “Letters” page of the Star recently, it seems to show otherwise. I hope its not a case of shooting oneself in the foot here.

We can’t hide things in the current age. Today, news spreads in seconds. Lies can be uncovered easily. Two of the letters are available on the Star’s website while the other one is in the print edition only.

Letter 1 (source):

PSD should release details of scholarship recipients

I REFER to “Not for all top students,” (The Star, May 18) quoting the PSD Director-General saying that those who were awarded the PSD scholarship are the “cream of the crop”.

I am a 11A student and I was the top student of my school. I was denied the PSD scholarship. However, some of my friends who had fewer As were awarded seats for matriculation and PSD scholarships and they do not know which to choose.

They are my very close friends and they are shy to face me purely because I am the top student and I was not offered anything. They too feel sad for me.

As such I would like the PSD to be transparent and genuine in making such statements. I am sure many in my shoes would have encountered the same situation. » Read more: cream of crop?

uthaya makes new appeal

This case is getting interesting. His family and close supporters claim negligence, while SUHAKAM guy and authorities say everything was done according to rules. Perhaps its time to relook the rules if it is infringing on basic rights.

I’m surprised to hear that he is still been given starchy food. You would need a basic amount of carbo, but have to be controlled due to diabetic condition. So, is his diabetic levels being monitored?

Being in detention is the same as being a prisoner, isn’t it (except the trial part)?  So, loss of weight, skin problem, stress, weakness, etc. all can be expected. Being paralysed is not.

Can a patient waive his medical report confidentiality so that his relatives can get second opinion? Specifically, can a prisoner do so? We read in  papers that parents of a detainee (chinese) who died in look-up recently (I think i read it about 3 or 4 days ago) were denied access to medical reports by the police. But the guy did a medical check up before being arrested – which produced a clean bill of health. » Read more: uthaya makes new appeal

Samy goes begging again for scholarships!

I remember Samy saying “no more begging” when Pahang EXCO line up did not have any Indians in it (well, only one candidate is available!). I suppose he only meant for that specific case. Now its that time of the year (nope, not X’mas or Deepavali) where a short serial drama is played out.

This time, only 72 out 2000 (3.6%) recipients were Indians. Stories are aplenty about students with lesser As getting scholarship due to their privileged status. Just check the letters section in The Star yesterday for some examples.

As usual, the aggrieved students and parents have no choice but to approach political parties (heard PKR’s Gopalakrishnan is organising a meeting as well, while Sivanesan had done so in Perak). Then, the party will be made to look like saviours when in fact it was their failure that bought the community down to this level in the first place. I think the parents and student are more mature now. They’ll just nod their heads at Samy’s speech, agreeing to everything he says, put up with “words of advice” until their kids get the scholarships. But when come to election time, another rout for MIC is expected. Don’t think that the community can be fooled by this kind of drama. » Read more: Samy goes begging again for scholarships!

Only 16 years in this case. The one in Selangor is well past the thirties, if I’m not mistaken. Again, political intervention is needed.

Johor church gets okay to convert land

source

JOHOR BARU: The congregation of Holy Light Church here had reason to rejoice last Sunday – they finally received approval from the Johor government to convert its land from agricultural to religious use after a 16-year wait.  The state executive council met on April 9 and approved the application, said Bar Council member Roger Tan, who is also a congregation member of the 56-year-old English church.

Last Sunday, Tan handed the official letter of approval to senior pastor Rev Nicholas Yeo.

“We are grateful that the Mentri Besar personally intervened in this matter,” said Tan who had highlighted the church’s plight to Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.  “Within two hours, the mentri besar called back and asked me to inform the church that the government would consider favourably our application after the election. True to his word, our application has been approved.”

In 1989, the church bought the agricultural land in Mukim Plentong, next to the Ponderosa Golf Course. When they applied for the conversion of the land use, they discovered that the state government had other plans for it.  The church then filed a suit against the government in 1995, and the government subsequently withdrew from the land acquisition. In 1999, the church applied again for the use of the land, which was sub-divided into two lots, to be converted for institutional and religious purposes. In 2000, the state government only approved one piece for institutional use.
