She uses EPF savings to set up a home for underprivileged children

HER experiences as a single mother has shown A. Peria-nayagi, 51, how vulnerable children from broken homes are.

The mother of three, however, was lucky as she had a reasonably well paying job to fend for herself and her children.

“I always wondered what it would be like for unemployed single mothers and realised that their children must be going through rough lives,” said Perianayagi who had worked for a multinational company for 20 years before quitting in 1999.

Following her resignation, Perianayagi used more than half of her EPF savings to set up a home for underprivileged and destitute children in Klang in 2005.

Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Jee-van currently has 15 children and Perianayagi aims to give them the best possible in education and care.

One of her plans involve moving the children to a bigger house as more space would allow them room to play and move about.

“We are planning to move out from our current premises in Lorong Nam Nam to a double-storey corner unit in Taman Gembira. It will be more conducive for the children,” she said.

Perianayagi said that if everything went according to plan, the home would be relocated within a few weeks.

However, she said the home was in dire need of necessities such as electrical appliances and furniture.

“We need things like beds, tables, chairs, mattresses, pillows, refrigerator, a washing machine, computers and cupboards as well as other household things,” said Perianayagi.

She hoped generous well-wishers would come forward to help her by providing the necessary items.

“We are not asking for money but would be grateful if people provided us with these things,” she said.

Those interested in helping Per-satuan Kebajikan Rumah Jeevan can do so by calling 03-3372 2714 or 016-343 5359 or by visiting the home at No 3, Lorong Nam Nam, Taman Dato Amar, Klang.

Number of chinese schools has reduced from 1342 (1957) to 1288 (2006). Which  is 54 schools less, roughly one school closed down every year. but the enrolment has nearly doubled from 361,208 (1957) to 636,124 (2006) students.

I suppose Tamil schools also have some increase in enrolment, due to use of English in school, better academic performance over the years, and commitment of teachers from Tamil schools.

Boom in Chinese school enrolment

PENANG: Enrolment at Chinese primary schools in the country has increased by almost 80% since independence, although the number of such schools has gone down.

Chinese education activist Loot Ting Yee said there were 1,342 Chinese primary schools with 361,208 pupils in 1957 compared with 1,288 schools with 636,124 pupils last year.

Comparatively, he said there were 2,198 national primary schools with 442,477 pupils in 1957 compared with 5,774 schools with 2,298,808 pupils last year.

Loot is chairman of the Lim Lean Geok (LLG) Cultural Development Centre that promotes Chinese education.

He is also the former vice-chairman of Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association of Malaysia).

He said that one of the reasons why the enrolment in Chinese schools had increased was due to the change in the medium of instruction in schools from English to Bahasa Malaysia.

“Many parents send their children to Chinese schools so that they could learn three languages,” he added.

Loot said Chinese primary schools currently faced a shortage of 2,000 to 3,000 teachers.

Teacher gets show-cause letter over abuse of pupils

By MEERA VIJAYAN

JOHOR BARU: The Education Department here has issued a show-cause letter to a teacher who had allegedly abused her pupils.

The Tamil primary school teacher has also been ordered to go for counselling.

The parents of a young girl recently told the The Star that their daughter had been pinched, slapped and beaten with a broom and a metal rod since April until she became too traumatised to go to school.

SJK(T) Yahya Awal headmaster M. Perumal said he knew of five to six pupils who had been beaten by the teacher.

Johor Education director Mokhy Saidon said his department had spoken to the headmaster.

“It is possible that the teacher is under stress because of family problems,” said Mokhy.

He said the teacher would be given counselling, adding that an officer from the department would be sent to speak to her.

Asked if the teacher, who has been in the profession for 17 years, would be suspended, Mokhy said: “Suspension and facing a disciplinary board will be the last resort if she continues to repeat her behaviour.”

He advised teachers under stress to get religious help or to speak to their peers or even to him to release tension “without taking it out on the pupils.”

Meanwhile, Kavitaanjali’s mother said the teacher, although on leave yesterday, had come to school and shouted at her daughter because the case had been highlighted in the media.

Accept the course you get, says MIC man

KUALA LUMPUR: Students offered places for unrelated courses in public universities have been urged to accept them.

Putera MIC coordinator P. Kamalanathan said students should not be disheartened as they would be able do the course of their choice after obtaining the first degree.

He said the call was being made as more than 200 Indian students failed to take up their places in the various universities in Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah last year.

Kamalanathan said Putera MIC had also set up a unit to assist new students.

“The students can enquire about their courses and the surroundings in their new campus.

“Those who fail to get places in the universities can also submit a copy of their appeal to ipta@puteramic.net,” he said.

Kamalanathan said students could also submit a copy of their appeals to MIC education bureau committee chairman Datuk Dr T. Marimuthu, who would forward them to party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

He said a list of Indian student representatives in the various public universities was also available to provide assistance to new students.

“The list can be accessed through the www.puteramic.net,” he said.

ESTATES should set up study centres, as in some estate homes schoolchildren are unable to study at night due to family circumstances.

Tamil Nesan reported that MIC president and Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu made this call after officially opening the study centre in Sungai Rela estate, Sungai Siput, last Sunday.

He said the establishment of study centres in the estates would give children the opportunity to gather and discuss their school education.

They would also be able to study in a peaceful environment.
