Students can now print offer letters directly from website

PUTRAJAYA: Students who have obtained places at a public university can now print the offer letters direct from the institution’s website.

Previously they had to wait for the letters through the post, leading to problems when these arrived late.

Higher Education Management Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Hassan Said said he had directed universities to send out offer letters from today but students also had the option of downloading them.

“This will enable those living in the peninsula and accepted into universities in Sabah and Sarawak, or vice-versa, more time to prepare,” he said at a press conference yesterday to announce this year’s public university admission figures.

Prof Hassan said out of the 68,110 applicants to public universities this year, 53,400 had the minimum qualification of a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00.

“From these, 40,116 have been accepted for the 2007/08 academic year, a slight increase over last year’s figure of 40,016,” he said.

Of the total accepted, 24,924 are bumiputras (62.1%), 12,745 Chinese (31.8%) and 2,447 Indians (6.1%).

Places offered for medicine and dentistry remain the same as last year, at 925 and 205 respectively, with 280 for pharmacy this year, compared with 285 last year.

On the cut-off point for entry into medicine, Prof Hassan said the ministry had not had time to analyse the figures as it had only completed the selection process on Sunday.

“The cut-off point is high. From my personal observation, it is those with around 95 or 96 marks who got into medicine, but this is only an estimate,” he said.

He said that since last year, entry into public universities had been based on both academic achievement (90%) and co-curriculum involvement (10%).

This year, however, the co-curriculum marks came from the Education Ministry, not from what students themselves had input when applying, he added.

According to him, there were candidates with high CGPA scores who did not get their first choice as they had low marks for co-curriculum involvement.

“Students have to be wise when choosing their courses and the universities,” he said.

On candidates with high marks who had not obtained courses of their choice, Prof Hassan said the ministry had tried to offer them options similar to the ones they had asked for.

The ministry has also set up a counter at its premises here where students can check the status of their application or receive counselling up to June 29.

‘Sivaji’ likely to break box-office records

JOHOR BARU, Mon:

Riots are unlikely to stop Sivaji the Boss from being a big winner at the local box office.

Viewers had rioted at two cinemas after technical glitches interrupted the screening of the Tamil movie.

Pyramid Saimira Group owns the rights to the movie, starring Rajnikanth, in Malaysia and Coimbatore and Hyderabad in India. It expects to gross RM15 million in royalty payments in this country.

Pyramid Saimira Theatre Chain (M) Sdn Bhd head of distribution Boban Balakrishnan said the company paid RM15 million for the rights.

This is the highest distribution fee for an Indian film after Chandramukhi ( RM1.5 million) in 2005.

"Most of the cinemas here are screening Sivaji the Boss four times a day. We have already collected RM1.5 million in returns.

"The feedback we are getting is that the movie has surpassed viewers’ expectations. So we are looking at collecting up to RM15 million in another five or six weeks’ time," said Boban, adding that the movie could well be the highest grossing Indian film of all time.

The movie, which broke box office records in India prior to its worldwide release, created high expectations among Malaysians.

So great was the hype that when technical glitches occurred in two cinemas in Klang and Ipoh, viewers rioted, vandalising cinema property. Police had to quell the disgruntled fans.

The movie is now screening in Japan, China, the US, the UK, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

Boban said the cinemas were packed, while tickets in India have been sold out for a fortnight.

At RM60 million, Sivaji is the costliest Indian film to date. The previous record was held by Hindi movie Devdas (2002), which had cost RM50 million.

Rajnikanth, known to fans as "Superstar Rajnikanth", also became the highest-paid lead actor in India with a salary of RM16 million, beating other well-known names such as Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

The film, which concerns the obstacles facing a youth on a crusade to provide free education and medicine to the poor, was directed by S. Shankar.

Besides Rajinikanth, it also stars Shriya, Vivek, Suman, Nayantara, Manivannan and Raghuvaran.

The film’s score and soundtrack is by acclaimed composer, A.R. Rahman.

Rajini movie breaks record for opening day takings

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tamil movie, Sivaji – The Boss has raked in takings of RM560,000 on its opening day, setting a new record in the Tamil film industry in Malaysia.

S. Vell Paari, the chairman of the movie distributor, Pyramid Saimira Theatre Chain (M), said that the highest takings on Thursday night was due to the overwhelming demand.

This broke the previous record high of RM300,000 for the film, Jeans starring Prasanth and Ashwarya Rai in 1997.

He said that the movie, starring South Indian superstar Rajinikanth, opened in 40 theatres throughout the country on the opening day and 53 theatres from Saturday.

Vell Paari said that the delay in getting the prints for the movie had resulted in the confusion in some theatres, which had to reschedule their screening times.

He also said that a 26-year-old accountant was detained for attempting to download the film with his handphone in a theatre in the Klang Valley on Friday.

He said that his company had also received information that a print of the film had been smuggled out of India and brought to Malaysia where attempts were being made to sell it to a company in Kepong.

“We also wanted to promote the pageant, which is well known for its charitable reach and social development programme.”

She added that the pageant, which is under the Miss Malaysia India Care Association only deals with sustainable community development programme that are not less than three years.

“The reason for the success this year lies in the variety of activities lined up and the number of exhibitors, which saw about 110 Malaysian exhibitors participating. Malaysia is well on its way to become a trading hub for Indian products in Asia,” he said.

Too traumatised to go to school

JOHOR BARU: An eight-year-old girl who was allegedly hit by a teacher is so traumatised that she refuses to go to school.

SJK (T) Yahya Awal Year Two pupil S. Kavitaanjali has minor bruises on her back after she was allegedly beaten with a broom stick and a piece of metal.

Kavitaanjali's mother, V. Thanaletchumi, 29, claimed that her daughter is also suffering from hearing problems.

“If we force her to eat, she just throws up after the meal,” she said.

Thanaletchumi claimed that her daughter’s problem started in April when the teacher took over from another to teach Tamil.

She said the teacher started abusing some of the children.

She claimed that she approached the teacher recently who at first denied hitting her daughter but later admitted to it.

Her husband, clerk N. Sagaran, 40, said that they had brought the matter up to the school authorities and also lodged a report with the police and the Education Ministry.

“When our daughter first told us that she was hit in school, we ignored her because we thought she had misbehaved or not paid attention during lessons,” he said, adding that they got worried when she started developing a fever and refused to go to school.

When contacted, school principal M. Perumal said a verbal warning had been issued to the teacher concerned.

He said the teacher had 17 years teaching experience and was transferred to the school last year.

DPM says Satu Rumah Satu Profesional – learn from Indians

Indian parents traditionally want the children to be doctor, lawyer, or engineer. In other words a job that is associated with respect, education, social upliftment, and better future. Of course, nowadays there are more professions to choose from, such as management, accounting, computing, pure and applied sciences, etc.

Rather than aiming for "one family, one graduate" scheme, Indians parties/associations/NGOs/concerned citizens should consider more detailed targets – a family should have:

– disposable income enough for the whole family (assume 2 parents and 3 children)
– all graduates of minimum Bachelor degree from reputable universities
– involved in at least one profit making business – family based, partnership, francshise etc.
– own a house
– savings amounting to 12 months of income.
– investment in shares/unit trusts and property
– properly insured family members
– no obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels due to excessive food and sedimentary lifestyle
– promote and develop a skill/art for each family member (music/painting/sports etc)

What else we can add?

Can this be a target by 2057, since our PM also starting to think about that date?

Seorang profesional setiap rumah

source

Oleh Zabry Mohamad

SERDANG 14 Jun – Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak berkata, kerajaan ingin melihat keluarga Melayu di luar bandar dapat melahirkan seorang doktor atau peguam melalui kempen ‘Satu Rumah Satu Profesional’.

Menurut Timbalan Perdana Menteri, orang Melayu perlu mencontohi masyarakat India apabila setiap ibu bapa mahu anak-anak mereka menjadikan kerjaya kedoktoran sebagai pilihan pertama diikuti peguam.
