Congrats to Dr Jegathesan for this appointment. I think its a first time a Malaysian of Indian descent been appointed to this position. Maybe because we have more IPTAs nowadays compared to 10 years ago. Won’t look nice if all are from one community 🙂  BTW, USM has two pr0 chancellors. The other one is Tan Sri Razali Ismail. Can check their website under top management. I hope its not some sort of quota thing.

Olympic Council of Malaysia deputy president and Asia’s fastest man in the 1960s, Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan, will be proclaimed pro-chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at the university’s 43rd convocation tomorrow.

He replaces strategic and financial consultant Tan Sri Dr Lin See Yan, a former deputy governor of Bank Negara Malaysia and former chairman/president and CEO of the Pacific Bank Group.

Education Counselling for SPM leavers by MyIndians.com

Something’s brewing at MyIndians.com 🙂 I attended a discussion (late due to Rajah!) organised by Datin Vasanthi last weekend. Met some influential people there: Prof Suresh Govind (Sri Sathya Sai Council Malaysia), Krishna (MHS), Rajah (Afterschool), Elanjelian (MCEF) and so on. [note to self: write-up on MyIndians to come soon].

There will be an event in two weeks time to counsel SPM leavers around Klang Valley.  Students who will be getting their results next week should make a beeline for the session.

More details will be made known once available.

Note: I wish YSS (MIC), myIndians, EWRF (C3G), and DHRRA can pool their resources and work together without politics involved. We can make better use of the resources. Will write more on this later.

Talking about politics, there’s no events by PR parties so far to cater for SPM/STPM leavers? No career guidance? No scholarship talks?

SRJK (T) Perak Sangeetha Sabah new building

Phew, after more than 3 decades! Hope the school will achieve more success after this. Also, some news stats are mentioned by Palanivel:24 fully-aided schools would benefit from redevelopment works under an RM86.4 million allocation;  RM5.3 million was allocated to upgrade existing facilities; partially-aided schools would also benefit from a RM69.9 million Education Ministry allocation; and MIC deputy president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam added: 69 schools with fewer than 25 students would be relocated in the next few years.

IPOH: Up to 30 students used to sit in a classroom divided into three sections by plywood walls.

They struggled to listen to their teacher amid lessons given by other teachers, which could be heard through the thin partitions.

That was what at least 160 SRJK (T) Perak Sangeetha Sabah pupils had to endure before their school in Jalan Tun Abdul Razak here was rebuilt recently.

They now enjoy their lessons in a proper school environment thanks to the redevelopment of Tamil schools programme planned by MIC and the Cabinet Committee for the Development of Indians.

After more than three decades, the single-storey, two-classroom school was transformed into a four-storey building with 10 classrooms, a staff room and office, library, computer laboratory, science laboratory and living skills laboratories.

Headmistress D. Pathmani said the redevelopment programme brought great relief to her teachers and students.

“We can now organise events and celebrations on our own premises instead of elsewhere.”

The school started classes in the new building in January.

While waiting for the construction to finish, the pupils and teachers shared the premises of SK Buntong, 5km away.

Despite not having their own place for about two years, Pathmani saidher Year Six pupils who sat the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah examinations last year did exceptionally well.

“Eighteen of 25 students passed all five subjects and recorded the highest passing rate of 72 per cent for the school since 2006.”

She said the better study environment played a major role in the pupils’ achievements.

“The pupils had a more conducive learning environment at SK Buntong.

“This enabled them to focus and participate in lessons.”

She said she expected her UPSR pupils to do well this year because of the improved school condition.

Bahasa Malaysia teacher Lourde Mary, 46, said the upgrade had also benefited teachers.

She said all 14 teachers had either completed or were pursuing the Primary School Teaching Degree course introduced by the government in 2005.

Mary expects to complete the course in December next year.

She used to be embarrassed about not embracing technology and felt intimidated when her pupils displayed better aptitude for computers than her.

“I never had the interest in tinkering with a laptop or surfing the Internet. But to complete my assignments for the course, I had to learn to be computer-savvy.

“Now I am no longer ashamed and have a renewed passion for my vocation.”

MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel said he hoped the upgrading would produce more positive results and pave the way for advanced Tamil school education.

“I hope other Indian languages such as Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Gujarati and Bengali will not be alien to Indian Malaysians.”

Palanivel said 24 fully-aided schools would benefit from redevelopment works under an RM86.4 million allocation this year.

Another RM5.3 million was allocated to upgrade existing facilities.

Partially-aided schools would also benefit from a RM69.9 million Education Ministry allocation.

MIC deputy president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said efforts were ongoing to relocate low-enrolment schools to areas with higher demand for Tamil education.

He said 69 schools with fewer than 25 students would be relocated in the next few years.

He said the process was time-consuming and involved finding suitable sites as well as fund-raising.

EWRF Football Program for Kids

Another good effort by EWRF. They have been running the C3G Education and Career Guidance program, and have started a Medical Aid Fund recently too. They have also conducted Total Immersion Camp (for English Language). Now, there’s another program focusing on a new area: sports. I hope community members can help support this program. See how you can help EWRF at their website.

THE Education Welfare Research Foundation (EWRF) has started an ambitious football programme.

The programme is an initiative to provide a platform for students whose parents are in the lower income group as well as under achievers to be involved in a healthy sporting activity.

Currently about 120 students, aged from nine to 17, are attending weekend training sessions at the SJK (T) West Country in Kajang. The coach is S. Selvaras, who had played for Hindu Youth FC as well IRC Veterans, in the local league.

Selvaras, a driver by profession, said he was pleased to be involved in the programme.

Take a break: The players in a relaxed mood after a training session.

“I have been coaching the players for the past three years. The participants are from the rural background. Their parents are not in a position to pay for their training at private football academies.

“This programme has certainly played a role in making them excel not only in football but also studies,’’ said Selvaras.

The programme co-ordinator E. Eesan Pasupathi said they had initiated the programme about five years ago.

“Then, our focus was to encourage the students to study and we had used football to entice them. We were encouraged with the participation of the students in football and our tuition programmes,’’ said Eesan.

But after two years, Eesan said they decided to also focus on primary school pupils.

“We found that it was more suitable to start with the primary school pupils. We have ample time to motivate as well as counsel them. We have been getting encouraging feedback from the parents,’’ said Eesan.

With precision: The trainees going through a skills drill during training.

Several players from the programme had gained places in their school teams. Some had represented Hulu Langat and Selangor in age group competitions. One player — S. Kumaresan — had earned a place in the PKNS team for the Reserve League, organised by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

Last year, EWRF made an impact in age group competitions. They were semi-finallists in the Under-16 age group in the 1Malaysia football competition and two other age group championships.

The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) had also called up three players for a series of trials.

However, they failed to make the cut when the final squad was named. But Eesan said the stint was a valuable experience for the players.

“Being young players, they are motivated and we will encourage them to train more diligently,’’ he said.

The success of the programme in Kajang has prompted EWRF to initiate similar training programmes in Rawang, Malacca, Johor Baru, Ampang, Sungai Siput and Tanjung Malim.

Eesan said they had plans to organise a competition for the trainees from the seven centres.

“The competition, most probably a centralised one, will give the coaches the opportunity to evaluate their charges’ progress.

“We will also invited former internationals to share their experience with the trainees,’’ said Eesan.

Finally, after few months, I’ve managed to get the beta version of the eduhelp website up and running. Not being artistically inclined and busy with other work, it took about 4 months to work on the site little by little. Still got more features to add and another 30++ scholarships to be listed. Hopefully can improve on it by the time SPM results are out in few weeks’ time.

Oh ya, the site is at poobalan.com/eduhelp
