PSD claims cream of the crop were selected for PSD scholarship, but if you read the “Letters” page of the Star recently, it seems to show otherwise. I hope its not a case of shooting oneself in the foot here.

We can’t hide things in the current age. Today, news spreads in seconds. Lies can be uncovered easily. Two of the letters are available on the Star’s website while the other one is in the print edition only.

Letter 1 (source):

PSD should release details of scholarship recipients

I REFER to “Not for all top students,” (The Star, May 18) quoting the PSD Director-General saying that those who were awarded the PSD scholarship are the “cream of the crop”.

I am a 11A student and I was the top student of my school. I was denied the PSD scholarship. However, some of my friends who had fewer As were awarded seats for matriculation and PSD scholarships and they do not know which to choose.

They are my very close friends and they are shy to face me purely because I am the top student and I was not offered anything. They too feel sad for me.

As such I would like the PSD to be transparent and genuine in making such statements. I am sure many in my shoes would have encountered the same situation. » Read more: cream of crop?

Samy goes begging again for scholarships!

I remember Samy saying “no more begging” when Pahang EXCO line up did not have any Indians in it (well, only one candidate is available!). I suppose he only meant for that specific case. Now its that time of the year (nope, not X’mas or Deepavali) where a short serial drama is played out.

This time, only 72 out 2000 (3.6%) recipients were Indians. Stories are aplenty about students with lesser As getting scholarship due to their privileged status. Just check the letters section in The Star yesterday for some examples.

As usual, the aggrieved students and parents have no choice but to approach political parties (heard PKR’s Gopalakrishnan is organising a meeting as well, while Sivanesan had done so in Perak). Then, the party will be made to look like saviours when in fact it was their failure that bought the community down to this level in the first place. I think the parents and student are more mature now. They’ll just nod their heads at Samy’s speech, agreeing to everything he says, put up with “words of advice” until their kids get the scholarships. But when come to election time, another rout for MIC is expected. Don’t think that the community can be fooled by this kind of drama. » Read more: Samy goes begging again for scholarships!

After making an audacious request of RM300 million per annum till 2020, Samy clarifies that it is to raise “indian equity”, and to invest in agro-based business and school affairs.

The proposal have been submitted, but we all know what happens to proposals. 🙂

Due to the economic pressure and increased spending for subsidies, I doubt this proposal will be approved. Maybe at most, a one-off amount of 100 million to give some hope and alleviate the situation.

PSD claims cream of crop selected for scholarship

After Dr S.Subra suggested automatic scholarships, and many disgruntled SPM achievers gathered at Perak and Selangor, PSD comes out with explanation. How nice if this explanation is given earlier. It would answer many questions.

Now it is revealed that minimum of 13A1s is the cutoff point for academic criteria. In others, all the 140 students who complained earlier don’t stand a chance. Not qualified la! PSD should make the criteria public as soon as the closing date for application is reached. This will ensure students and parents would not wait anxiously and can make alternative plans. In fact, data on number of A1 achievers should be read from MES and matched with the number of scholarships available. In this way, it is possible to know how many A1s is needed to qualify for academic criteria. Probably, if 2000 places are available, PSD can pick the top 4000 or 5000, and do their shortlisting from there. » Read more: PSD claims cream of crop selected for scholarship

‘We are candles that sacrifice ourselves’

MALACCA: The best teachers are often ones who endure great trials and tribulations simply to impart their knowledge to the next generation.  In that respect, the four recipients of Tokoh Guru 2008, which was awarded at the Teachers Day 2008 celebrations at Seri Negeri here yesterday, do not disappoint.

K. Krishnasamy’s father died when he was only 3, leaving his mother, a labourer with the Works Department and part-time milk vendor, to raise him.

Despite tremendous social and financial barriers, Krishnasamy’s perseverance and determination earned him not only career satisfaction but the national-level Tokoh Guru 2008 award.

“Teaching is a commitment. We are the candles that sacrifice ourselves to shine knowledge in the lives of younger generations,” said the 68-year-old from Selangor.
According to his wife, S. Indrani, Krishnasamy had never wanted to be anything other than a teacher.
