MIC elections nomination took place on Saturday. As predicted, there’s a three corner fight for the Deputy President post in MIC. Incumbent Palanivel will be challenged by ex-Deputy Dato Subra and Sothinathan. Expect Palanivel to win due to Samy Vellu’s campaigning.

And, there’s still another election battle in 2012, when Samy Vellu actually retires (or so he says). So, the loser here still have a chance then.

The Vice President posts sees 8 candidates vying for 3 positions. The president’s men are the three parliamentarians – Dr S. Subra, Saravanan, and SK Devamany. The “independents” are  Also in the contest are businessman and former Federal Territory MIC chief VKK Teagarajan, former central working committee (CWC) member KP Samy, Jelebu division leader P Mariayee who is the sole woman candidate for the post, businessman and CWC member S Balakrishnan (Johor MIC Treasure  ex-Johor MIC chief) and Kelana Jaya division vice-chairman P Subramaniam.

Again, the president’s men are expected to win comfortably, again raising questions on the credibility of the winners late. There will be a stigma on the winners – winning because of approval from president. They can’t help it if people wonder.

Looks like Gobalakrishnan, MP for Padang Serai hitting out at a person (policeman):

And after that, he was manhandled and arrested. It seems broken/fractured the hand, torn pants until can see the underwear.

If based on clip shown in TV3, its a by-election in Padang Serai soon. Its possible that the MP was provoked, but still its wrong to hit a another person, especially law enforcement officer. I wonder how he going to escape from this mess.

MIC Elections and AGM

Today saw the AGM for Youth, Wanita, Putera and Puteri wings of MIC taking place.

President’s man T.Mohan beat President’s nephew S.P Muthuveloo, garnering 321 votes against 148. This may be a sign that the other President’s man will be chosen as well, meaning goodbye Dato Subra and Sothinathan?

The deputy youth chief post was a tighter affair. MIC Youth political bureau chief V Mugilan (aligned to Mohan) defeated Kahang assemblyperson R Vidyananthan by 266 to 204 votes.

Meanwhile Wanita wing chief P Komala Devi retained her seat by defeating challenger and deputy S Thangasvari by 26 votes. Komala obtained 238 votes while Thangasvari gained 212 votes.

The deputy’s post was won by Dr CV Prema of Perak  (aligned to Komala) who defeated Negeri Sembilan Wanita MIC chief Dr P Thanaletchumi by getting 279 votes to 172.

According to Komala:

Speaking to reporters, Komala said her priority was to unite the women’s wing.

“We will also be increasing our programmes to serve the people, like medical screenings for women against breast and cervical cancer, and financial advice for entrepreneurs.

Komala also planned to organise leadership courses to train more leaders in the party.

To a question if she had expected a slim majority, she said she was not surprised as there was a smear campaign against her.

The AGM saw few suggestions worth mentioning:

1. MIC Youth to increase age limit from 40 to 45 in order to attract more professionals, create second echelon leaders, and possibly to avoid conflict with Putera wing. The change to be proposed in the upcoming general assembly.

2. Online membership application to be introduced.

3. Membership in MIC branches to be reduced from 100 to 65 so that better service can be provided to members (and to open more branches).

And, Samy talked about Facebook!!! :

“Youth members can create their own blogs and use the Facebook facility to interact with each other, and at the same time provide information on the activities and achievements of our party,” he said.

Syabas to Samy. Now we can see an influx of MIC people entering Facebook, joining the existing members and leaders. Hopefully it would not be like the call for blogging – when many politicians from all sides set up blogs, but today how many actually updating…

Congrats to the winners. Hopefully they will bring improvement to their various wings, champion the rights and justice for all Malaysian, steer clear of scandals, and manage to stay in position till the next election.

Not sure how reliable the news from Bernama is, but here it goes as reported by MK: Samy supports Palanivel to defend his post, and subsequently replace Samy as president next year.

MIC deputy president G Palanivel has received the backing of S Samy Vellu to defend his post at the party polls in September and eventually succeed the latter as president.

According to Bernama, a senior state MIC leader revealed that the former women, family and community development deputy minister had received the blessings of Samy Vellu.

The president, he said, endorsed Palanivel for deputy president last week at a meeting with several senior MIC state leaders and had informed his decision to vice-president S Sothinathan and Human Resources Minister and MIC secretary-general Dr S Subramaniam.

Sothinathan was earlier widely tipped to receive Samy Vellu’s backing for the party number two post, following the MIC president’s “stormy” relationship with 58-year-old Palanivel over the last year.

However, it is learnt that the president’s decision favouring Palanivel was expected, taking into account the age and experience of the journalist-turned-politician in leading the party.

“The president also felt that Palanivel, had the humanity, close contact with the grassroots and various other qualities to take helm of the party after he retires,” said the leader who did not want to be named.

Palanivel could not be contacted for comment.

Samy Vellu after winning the presidential election uncontested in March, this year, had declared that this would be his last term and whoever picked as deputy president at the party election would take over the leadership of the 630,000-member party after his retirement from active politics.

However, many had expected Samy Vellu’s decision to favour Palanivel especially with the “close relations” the two leaders are enjoying presently.

Prior to the presidential election, Samy Vellu told a closed-door gathering of party division leaders from Selangor at a hotel, here, that his relationship with Palanivel, fondly known as “GP” in the party circles was akin to the relationship of a husband and wife.

“In a husband-wife relationship there are bound to be fights and disagreements but this does not mean that we have to divorce. That would not make a happy marriage. My relationship with Palanivel is the same. We are like a husband and wife team,” Samy Vellu was said to have told the division leaders.

PPP to sack Murugiah

Looks like his days are numbered –  involvement in money politics, failing to represent the party or cooperating with the leaders and using his position for self promotion.

The executive council of PPP is gunning for Murugiah’s head.  He has only until June 7 to retain his position in the council. After that goodbye to him. According to Kavyeas, more than “90% of members” had called for Murugiah’s sacking because of mounting complaints against him from within and outside the party.

Party president Datuk M. Kayveas said Murugiah’s sacking would be announced after the AGM which is expected to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“I’ve advised the executive council members to delay the sacking so that we will not be accused of denying Murugiah a chance to contest in the party elections,” Kayveas said after chairing the executive council meeting here yesterday.

“We are giving him a chance to contest for the presidency or any other position.”

Murugiah is not able to contest in any seat because his PPP branch is de-registered. So, he will be stuck in limbo unless he gets things sorted out soon.

Murugiah has clarified that he is not contesting and challenged the complainants to report to MACC if there is proof of his alleged crimes.

PPP supreme council member Datuk T. Murugiah has challenged critics to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if they have proof he has been bribing party members to nominate him for the party’s top post.

Murugiah, who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said he was not eyeing the top post, contrary to speculation.

“I am young and happy to be appointed the PPP’s sole representative in the Government, despite being at number nine in the party hierarchy,” he said when met at the Tafe College here yesterday.

Murugiah, 45, said he would continue to support Datuk M. Kayveas as president, describing the latter as an effective leader.

“I want to make it clear that I will not be contesting the presidency. How am I to contest that post when I am not even a vice-president?”

On Thursday, Kayveas, who has been president since 1993, claimed Murugiah was secretly going around the country seeking support for the top post in party polls to be held on June 7.

Kayveas said he had proof that Murugiah, the party’s Youth wing leader for 13 years, had offered money and contracts to win votes from divisions.

To this, Murugiah said: “I am a deputy minister solely in charge of the Public Complaints Bureau. I don’t get projects, the only income I have is as deputy minister.

Murugiah said some of his critics may be unhappy because he was named the most popular Indian politician by an online portal recently.

Murugiah said there was no fallout with Kayveas and that he would explain his side of the story at the party’s supreme council meeting today.

Another report (NST) says:

Former People’s Progressive Party Youth leader Datuk T. Murugiah yesterday strongly denied any intention to contest the party’s top post and refuted allegations of vote-buying.

Murugiah, 45, said he had no intention of going against his boss Datuk M. Kayveas for the president’s post.

“He is a good leader and I don’t see any reason why we need a change. I will continue to give him my support.

“I am still young… still learning the ropes and I’m not ready nor see myself contesting the post in the near future,” he said at a scholarship presentation ceremony at Tafe College, Sikamat, near here.

Kayveas, who took over the presidency in 1993 and retained the post for three consecutive terms, had earlier claimed that Murugiah was planning to challenge him for the top post even after the party’s supreme council had agreed that there shouldn’t be a contest for the top post.

Murugiah, who is a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said he would speak to Kayveas over the weekend to clear the air.

“I have not spoken to him yet as I only learnt of the news but I hope we will be able to settle the matter soon.”

On allegations that he was offering money and contracts for divisional votes, Murugiah said he was shocked by the allegation.

“It’s sad that people would think I would resort to such tactics. I am not rich to be able to give out money freely. I am only a civil servant earning my deputy minister’s salary.

“Furthermore, my duty is only with the public complaints bureau in the Prime Minister’s Department. I only receive complaints and not projects. So what kind of project can I give out to people? These are baseless allegations.”

He added that if there was proof to these allegations, a report could be lodged with the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“I will give my full cooperation to the agencies. I believe the truth will prevail. Until then, I will just have to be patient and continue serving the people.”

Meanwhile, a close aide to Murugiah said jealous PPP members were “poisoning” Kayveas into believing that the former wanted to contest the party’s top post.

“Murugiah did not say or imply he was going to contest for the party’s presidency. He had even explained to Kayveas two weeks ago during the supreme council meeting that he had no intentions of challenging him.”

The source said the party’s top leadership was feeling threatened by Murugiah’s growing popularity among the grassroots, which had sparked rumours among top party members.

“Murugiah was told by former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to be in charge of the Indian community’s affairs and in line with this, the deputy minister had been organising seminars for small and medium enterprises for the Indians.

“Some 2,500 participants comprising mostly PPP members attend each of the seminars. This is worrying the party’s top leadership because even the party’s AGM (annual general meeting) does not draw that many (attendees),” he said.

The source said that it was widely rumoured Kayveas had also mentioned that he wanted to “finish off” Murugiah’s role as a deputy minister and become a minister himself.

Kavyeas takes up this challenge and mentioned that party members would lodge reports with MACC next week. He said one guy who is an aide to Murugiah was already suspended for bribery case. Meanwhile, Murugiah did not turn up for the meeting.

Kayveas said party members would lodge reports with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission next week against Murugiah for money politics.

“We have suspended one of Murugiah’s aides for negotiating money transactions among division and branch leaders, while a division chairman was suspended for receiving a RM74,000 allocation from Murugiah.”

Where’s that insect repellent?
