National Deepavali open house speech

As we all know, national level Deepavali Open House was held in Siliau Estate, Port Dickson last Sunday. Nope, I didn’t attend.

Anyway, the interesting thing (besides food and show) is the speech. Below is excerpts from DPM Muhyiddin’s speech taken from The Star and NST:

“That is what we have been promoting under the 1Malaysia concept. We will continue to ensure that everyone gets treated justly and his or her rights will always be protected as provided for under the Constitution and the principles of the Rukunegara,” said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said the Government would use “unity in diversity” as an asset and be an example to other nations on how people in a multi-racial country could live peacefully and progress as a nation.

There is and will never be a first or second or third class society as is prevalent in some countries. This won’t ever happen in Malaysia,” Muhyiddin said at the national-level Deepavali open house celebrations held at the Siliau Estate here. Some 10,000 people attended the event.

As such, he said 15% of the 1Malaysia unit trust scheme was reserved for the Indian community.

Other measures include a RM15mil allocation so Indian youths can apply for business loans, an increase in the number of Indians in the civil service and the training of 2,635 Indian youths to become entrepreneur.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday reiterated that there is no such thing as a first or second-class citizen in the country and that all citizens have equal rights.

He stressed that the government would continue to ensure fairness and equality for all as stated in the Federal Constitution and uphold all the principles of the Rukun Negara.

No Malaysian should feel neglected as every individual, regardless of race or religion and whether he lives in town or the outskirts, enjoys the same rights and privileges.

“There is no segregation of race or status here and there is certainly no such thing as a first or second-class citizen,” he said at the national-level Deepavali open house at Ladang Siliau near here.

Muhyiddin called on all people to set aside their differences and heed the prime minister’s call to unite as one under the spirit of 1Malaysia.

We admit that there are some differences among us, but these should not at any point affect our relationships with each other.

“It is time for us to forget our differences and be more understanding towards one another and help each other to further enhance unity and development.”

He hoped that one day, Malaysia would become known as a country that had successfully united people of races under one roof.

Well, I’ll leave you to your own conclusions!

The Star’s article on 5/11 quoted as below:

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the Indian community would not be marginalised and all races would benefit from government initiatives including education.

“As part of our efforts to assist the Indian community, we will also ensure more jobs for them in the public sector besides implementing other measures to improve the community’s socio-economic standing.

“Co-operation between races is essential. Differences must be set aside in order for us to progress as a nation.

We are blessed to live in a multi-racial society such as ours. There will not be first-, second- or third-class citizens here. No one will be left behind no matter if they are from the city or the most remote place in the country,” he said.

Wishing all Hindus  a joyous, happy,  memorable, awesome and spiritual festival of lights with your loved ones.

Let the light in us enlighten others!

As we celebrate a special Deepavali, one that falls on the last Saturday of Puratasi month, let us spare some time and thought for the less fortunate.

I had a busy day today, till couldn’t find time to reply to all the SMSes, emails, and FB messages. And the phone is still giving new SMS/email/FB alert!  Thank you all for the wishes and hope you guys enjoy the festival as well. Hope can reply tomorrow. Tired from shopping, house cleaning, and visiting relative.

Just came back from relative’s house. Had two interesting incidents to relate.

First one: a few teenagers, drunk, were lighting firecrackers in front of, not their house, but my relatives house. Really a nuisance, and other neighbors worried about damages to the vehicles parked outside. Anyway, the elders in that family returned home, and my relative talked to them to advise the youths.

Second incident: a drunk motorcyclist nearly had a last date with my car on the way back. Luckily the Gods were smiling on him.

I guess you know where this is leading to. 🙂

While we enjoy the festive season with much merry, remember to SAY NO TO ALCOHOL.  You’ll never know when you cross the limit. It may be to late when you realise it.

Oh ya, forgot to add, I’m wondering what happened to my Member of Parliament. He put up a big banner at my residential area for Hari Raya (and this place has probably about 10% Malay population!). I can’t find any banner for Deepavali wishes (Indian population here is estimated to be about 15 to 20%).  Either he had ordered too many banners for Raya until don’t know where to put, or he ordered too little banners for Deepavali until not enough 🙂

hmm…did anyone notice this year’s Deepavali programs on TV are a bit more than previous years?

Since last Sunday was Vinayagar Chaturthi, and coincidentally, there was a wedding to attend in KL (Ganesan Kulai’s), we decided to drop by Kotumalai Pillaiyar Temple (Jalan Pudu). The crowd was still there at around 10am, and traffic was bad. Managed to just prayer from outside the temple.

Anyway, before reaching the temple, we saw an elephant being transported on a lorry, followed by few lorries which took part in the record-breaking convoy to mark the birthday of Lord Ganesha.

Record-breaking convoy marks deity’s birthday

KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s longest convoy of 213 lorries took part in a procession held yesterday to celebrate Vinayagar Sathurthi, which marked the birthday of Hindu deity Lord Ganesha.

Measuring some 79.5km long, the convoy, which included an elephant to signify the deity, achieve a new feat in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Hundreds of devotees walked beside the lorries, which had been decorated with portraits of the elephant-headed Hindu god, in a procession that began at 7.30am from the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara.

The procession stopped briefly at various places, including the Kottu Malai Pillaiyar temple in Jalan Pudu Lama and Batu Caves, before making its way back to Sri Maha Mariamman.

Big day: Devotees marking Lord Ganesha’s birthday celebration at Court Hill temple in Puduraya, Kuala Lumpur, Sunday.

Among the devotees at the Kottu Malai temple was 47-year-old secondary school teacher J.K. Vassanthi, who has been taking a fast of silence in homage to Lord Ganesha’s birthday for the past 28 years.

Accompanying her was her husband R. Ravindren, 48, who said his wife had been a devotee of Lord Ganesha before their marriage.

“She is thanking the deity for granting all her wishes and has even named our son after Him,” he said.

Another devotee who came to offer her prayers there was a Chinese woman, who embraced Hinduism three years ago.

“I feel calm and serene in this temple,” said the woman, who only wanted to be known as Adeline.

The 32-year-old fitness trainer said she often prayed at a nearby temple but decided to drop by Kottu Malai after finding out about the festival.

Clerk C. Minatchi, 31, said she had been going to the temple every week for six years since her prayers had been an-swered.

“My brother had gone into coma after an accident. I prayed to Lord Ganesha and 10 days later, my brother recovered,” she said.

Port company executive C. Kaleappan, 51, said he had been travelling all the way from Penang with his family to celebrate the occasion at Kottu Malai for the past 18 years.

“I feel a special bond with this temple and with the blessings of the Lord, my family is prosperous and healthy,” he said, who came with his wife and three daughters.
