Hindu civilisation in Kedah may predate Angkor

While its a well-known fact that Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley) hosts proof of early Hindu civilization, recent findings suggests that it may even predate Angkor Wat, making it the oldest civilization in the region (though I think local civilization existed before Hindus came to Southeast Asia, while some claim classic Angkor civilization was from 800-1300 AD).  The findings are remains of two buildings – an administration site and an iron smelter, calculated to be as old as 3rd century AD, predating Angkor (12th till 14th century). The iron smelter is a surprise as it indicates the technology was quite advanced at that time. According to one of the researchers:

“We have dated artifacts from what we believe are an administration building and an iron smelter to 1,700 BP (years before present) which sets the Bujang civilisation between the third and fourth century AD,” he told AFP.

“We have only one date so far so we can say it is one of the earliest civilisations in the region but with more dates we will be able to verify whether it is the oldest civilisation in the region,” he added.

Mokhtar said the iron smelter was a surprise find as it showed that such an early civilisation was already quite advanced technologically.

Most interestingly, one would say the original religion of northern Malaysia is Hinduism, just for the record 🙂

MHS launches book for temple sermon

January 13th, 2009

The book is to be used as a guideline during Friday sermons. Not forced upon, so temples still have freedom to disregard the book. Its a good step. At least temples have some reference for their sermons. Problem is, not many temples have sermons every week.

Book On Friday Evening Sermons For Temples

By Ravindran Duraisamy

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) — Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) has compiled a book that will serve as a guideline in delivering sermons at temples all over the nation with the emphasis on national unity.

With the title ’52 Velli Sinthanai Manikal’ or ‘Virtuous Thoughts for 52 Fridays’, the book is to be utilised by the temples in delivering sermons suggested every Friday, that is 52 times in 2009.

The book was complied in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s call that all religious institutions play a proactive role in strengthening national unity.

“The prime minister’s proposal that religious leaders help get the message across on unity through the Friday khutbah for Muslims and Sunday sermons for Christians is most appropriate.

“In line with this, temples in the country are encouraged to use this book as a guideline in their sermons every Friday evening,” said Dr Balakrishnan Kandasamy, 50, the head of the religious sermon division for MHS.

The topics for sermons recommended by the book highlights the universal human values advocated by all religions and the ones that were vital for enhancing the spirit of unity and togetherness, he noted.

Former MHS chairman for Pahang Thondarmamani M.Duraisamy, 80, related to Bernama that he had been waiting for a standard guideline like this for all the temples with the adherents listening to the same message.

“I concur with the prime minister’s view that if we love Malaysia, choose peaceful co-existence, want to create a harmonious atmosphere, we must make sure our words and deeds are within the ambit of religious tolerance and the freedom to worship like practiced in Malaysia all this while,” added Thondarmamani.

Among the aspects given prominence by the book is community service, an undertaking considered sacred in Hinduism and must be conducted without any discrimination on race, religion or any prejudice, said Dr Balakrishnan.

The book also narrates the lives of four exemplary Hindu spiritual gurus or ‘Nyanmarkal’ that serve as a good example in forging unity within the society and family.

TEMPLES ARE READY TO USE THE BOOK

MHS Chairman Datuk A.Vaithilingam told Bernama that the book had already been distributed to the temples in all the states and districts with many of the temples committees stating their readiness to deliver sermons based on the books.

“Temples need only consider one topic for each sermon; for example the first topic in the book – How to Greet Others, why it is important to greet someone and return greetings of others.

“Greetings in Hinduism must be returned and commonly done by clasping both hands and bringing them close to the chest,” said Vaithilingam.

A BOOK OF UNIVERSAL VALUES

The chairman of the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple in Mentakab, Pahang, Balakrishnan @ Rajah, 47, noted that it is an important book and anyone should be able to use it due to its simple language and the universal values promoted.

He thanked MHS for combining religious values and unity in the book.

“It is pertinent to relate to the younger generation on why unity between and within the different races is important and only by tolerating and respecting one another can we lead a harmonious existence and confront many of the social woes that we are facing today,” he said.

This book can also be obtained from MHS at No 63, Jalan Yusof Shahbudin 16, Taman Sentosa, 41200 Klang, Selangor. Those keen to get hold of a copy can contact 03-51613363, 012-2347495, 016-4376352 or e-mail to drbala@hindusangam.org.my or alagansiva@yahoo.com.

The book is now published in Tamil and will be available in Malay and English soon.

Tamil Language and Hinduism Classes at PJ

From Shantan Menon:

A simple question to all,how many of us Indians (Tamils) and or Hindus know how to speak, read and write our own mother tongue? How many of us stand proud telling that we are Indians or Hindus? How many of us when we meet our fellow Indian friends, say Vanakam,or even converse in tamil or any other Indian languages?IF your answer is
a ‘YES’,then you should be proud of yourself that you have not lost your identity.Look at our fellow Malay and Chinese friends, they are so fluent with their respective mother tougues, and they are proud speaking their languages. On the other hand,we Indian are lacking on this.

Why am I saying this?Well, the reason is simply because I would like to contribute towards improving awareness amongst our Indian community.I have volunteered to conduct Tamil Language and Hinduism classes.Knowledge gained, adds value whilst knowledge shared multiplies value.Gone are the days whereby the non Brahmins are prohibited to learn the Vedas,in this modern world,we are all equal,we all have equal opportunities.

The Tamil language class(to speak, read and write) would be for about 3 months.Upon completion of the Tamil Langauge class,I would start with the Hinduism classes which comprise lessons on Saiva Sidthantham, the Thirumurai(Tamil devotional songs, such as Thevaram,Thiruvasagam, etc) and Thirumarai(the interpretation of the
4 Vedas, the stories behind them and the Baghvad Gita). These classes are continuous. All classes would be conducted in Tamil(mostly) and English.

Some points to be highlighted to our members. On a few occasions,I have been invited to houses to recite devotional songs(mostly funerals and anthiyesthi ceremonies). It is quite dissapointing to know that many of the deceased family members can’t even recite a simple song of the thirumurai. It is the greatest bliss for the deceased when his/her family members recite these songs for they souls rather than a third party reciting it on behalf of the family members. It is time that we all Indians realise this point and lets start learning a bit about our beautiful language and religion.Lets
all together prove to the world that our language and religion is not fading off.Lets prove that it’s ever glowing in our hearts and souls.

Classes are conducted at the Malaysian Hindu Sangam Building, PJS 1.
Time: Every Sunday-6.00pm to 8.00pm (Initially)
Fees: RM40.00 per month.

Those who are interested kindly email me at shanthan.penta@gmail.com or contact me @ 0123016607. Any persons(adults and children)are most welcomed to join these classes.
Be proud to be an Indian,be proud of our language and religion.

All sworn in except Manoharan

Manoharan must be sworn-in within six months after the general election, or forced to lose his seat and face a by-election

Manoharan wants to be sworn in like the others, but all signs indicate it will be done at the detention camp. Selangor MB gives a differing opinion that “Mano will be sworn in the Dewan” meaning there are plans to get him released. But this must be done in 6 months time (4 1/2 more left).

Let us pray for a speedy release! » Read more: All sworn in except Manoharan

Penang Hindu Endowments Board should be apolitical

The previous state government dished out the positions to politicians. The current government should not repeat the same mistake. They must set up a committee to short list and select suitable candidates to be in the board. There should be competent people well versed in religion and community issues. Politicians who lead will be seen as making skewed decisions or under influence of their political parties. I don’t think the assemblymen should be in the board.
