'Old horse' Thanabalasingam touched by award from King

KUALA LUMPUR: At 72, little did Rear-Admiral (R) Tan Sri K. Thanabalasingam realise that he would still be honoured by the government.

Thus, it was a pleasant surprise for the country’s first local Royal Malaysian Navy chief, who served from 1967 to 1976, to be bestowed with the Panglima Setia Mahkota award by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin earlier this month.

"It was totally unexpected. I thought they had forgotten ‘old horses’ like me," said a jovial Thana, as he is fondly known.

"Since receiving my award from the King, I have been deluged with congratulatory messages from friends, politicians and navy personnel, past and present.

"I was overcome with emotion when some of the messages read the title conferment as ‘long overdue, about time and high time’.
"I owe it all to the navy which is like family to me, being a bachelor," said Thana, at a reception hosted by the Brittania Royal Naval College (BRNC) alumni at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday.

About 100 of the 300 BRNC alumni members, who graduated from the prestigious instituition at Dartmouth, England, attended the reception held to honour their patrons Thana and current RMN chief Admiral Tan Sri Ramlan Mohamed Ali for being bestowed the Tan Sri title.

Thana said the investiture ceremony was not only memorable but also historical as two navy chiefs of different generations were awarded the PSM simultaneously.

Thana reminisced how during his days as RMN chief, he often punished officers "who could not hold their drinks".

"I was harsh, more so to discipline and make them credible sailors. I even thought of myself almost insane to lead the navy at the young age of 31 and then retire at 40," said Thana, who left the navy prematurely but went on to serve as a director of several corporate organisations and manage his marine consultancy firm.

Thana recalled a moment in 1968 when the country’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman consulted him over the threat posed by the Philippines over its claim to Sabah.

"I became acting Armed Forces chief when Gen Tunku Osman Jiwa was away attending a meeting in Bangkok.

"Philippines aircraft were buzzing our ships and Tunku told us that the British were withdrawing troops east of the Suez, including Singapore.

"Tunku wanted our navy vessels to be equipped with missiles to counter the Filipino threat.

"We were in a predicament as we were not allowed to store the missiles at the Woodlands base in (newly-sovereign) Singapore.

"So we made provisions to place them in Johor. That’s when we realised the need for our own naval base in Lumut," said Thana.

In his opening address, BRNC president Admiral (R) Tan Sri Abu Bakar Abdul Jamal, who was RMN chief between 1998 and 2002, said the reception was a fitting occasion to honour a "Morris Minor" like Thana and a "Proton Gen 2" like Ramlan.

"Often, we only meet during weddings and funerals. This is one occasion to catch up and collect ‘old debts’.

"You will notice the seating arrangements are based on seniority and senility," he joked.

On the conferment of the Tan Sri title to Thana, Abu Bakar said: "It should have come a long time ago. Apparently, they were waiting for Thana to get married. But it was not to happen."

Abu Bakar poked fun at Thana for over indulgence in golf until the putter became his walking stick.

Thana took over the RMN from Commodore A.N. Dollard of the Royal Australian Navy, who served from 1965.

The first RMN chief was Commodore E.D. Norman (1957-1960) who was succeeded by Captain W.J. Dovers (1960-1962), both from the British Royal Navy.

Except for the late Vice-Admiral (R) Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Salleh, who replaced Thana and served until 1986, and the late Vice-Admiral (R) Tan Sri Mohd Shariff Ishak, who was RMN chief from 1990 to 1995, the rest of the former chiefs attended the reception.

Present were Vice-Admiral (R) Tan Sri Abdul Wahab Nawi (1986-1990), Vice-Admiral (R) Datuk Seri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Noor (1995-1998), Admiral (R) Datuk Mohd Ramly Abu Bakar (2002-2003), Admiral (R) Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor (2003-2005) and Admiral (R) Tan Sri Ilyas Din (2005-2006).

In 2005, Mohd Anwar broke tradition as the first non-army chief to become Armed Forces chief until his retirement earlier this year.

Coincidentally, Thana, Anwar, 57, and Ilyas, 56, celebrate their birthdays on March 12.

Booklet to raise awareness of religious rights

KUALA LUMPUR (June 19, 2007): The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) today launched a booklet to raise public awareness on religious rights.

Its deputy president Datuk A. Vaithilingam said the booklet, entitled Unity Threatened by Continuing Infringements of Religious Freedom, highlighted the personal tragedies of various ordinary Malaysians.

At a press conference today, Vaithilingam said the council had sent a memorandum to the government through the National Unity Advisory Panel in October 2005, calling for each individual's freedom of religion under the constitution to be protected.

"In the memorandum, we had set out all these problems and urged the government to take legislative reforms to alleviate these concerns. Until today, no such reforms have been made," he said.

It was because of this that the council decided to produce the booklet, and "to encourage debate so we can all jointly seek solutions to these problems", he said.

The public can get a copy of the booklet, which includes the memorandum, at the council's headquarters at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields and from the council's member associations. He said the booklet will also be sent to all members of parliament.

The council, All Women's Action Society, Sisters in Islam, Women's Aid Organisation (WAO), Women's Centre for Change and Women's Development Centre also initiated a candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka today evening.

Vaithilingam said the vigil was held in solidarity with M. Revathi, who was born to Indian Muslim parents and was sent to a religious rehabilitation centre after she applied to the syariah court to leave Islam. She has professed to be Hindu and married Suresh Veerappan under Hindu rites and they have a 15-month-old daughter.

"The venue of the vigil was Dataran Merdeka, where 50 years ago our independence from colonial rule was proclaimed. It was intentionally chosen to give Revathi some hope that she too will have freedom soon," he said.

Travel agency to handle visa service for India

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian High Commission here has outsourced the processing of visas to a local travel agency.

Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok Kantha said that from Aug 1, Grandlotus Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd would collect visa applications from those intending to visit India, and submit them to the high commission for vetting and affixing of visa stamps in the passports.

He said the company was chosen from 23 that had submitted bids for the outsourcing of visa applications.

“The high commission received 82,000 applications for visas last year, with a growth of between 8% to 10% in the last three years,” he said.

He added that Malaysia was the third country where the processing was outsourced, after the United States and Britain.

He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the high commission's First Secretary, Sudhir Kumar Mehrotra, and Grandlotus chairman K. Thangavelu here yesterday.

Grandlotus will set up processing centres here, and in Penang and Johor Baru.

Movie fans go on rampage

By M. KRISHNAMOORTHY

KUALA LUMPUR: Pandemonium reigned at more than 10 theatres on Thursday night when the premiere of the much-anticipated Tamil movie Sivaji – The Boss was either delayed or cancelled.

The movie, starring South Indian superstar Rajinikanth and released simultaneously in India and Malaysia on Thursday, was supposed to start at 9pm but was delayed at some cinemas by about six hours and cancelled at others.

Keeping watch: A policeman observing the crowd of disappointed movie fans at the State Cinema in Petaling Jaya on Thursday night.

Disappointed fans turned violent, causing damage at a number of cinemas. Police had to be called in at various venues to stop the outbreak of violence.

In Penang, fans turned unruly at the delay and banged on ticket counters, some demanding a refund and others insisting that the movie be screened. Police were called in to control the situation and the movie was screened after a three-hour delay.

In Klang's Sri Intan theatre, fans who had waited more than five hours for the movie to start, wrecked the cinema lobby, breaking ticket counters and set fire to part of the theatre. The fire was immediately put out by workers.

In Rawang, fistfights broke out, and people threw bottles, breaking glass showcases, while in Ipoh, a cinema manager was beaten up by irate fans. He suffered head injuries which required stitches.

Police arrested several people but released them later.

Cinemagoer D. Karthik, who had bought five tickets, said he could not see the movie because it was delayed by five hours at the State Cinema in Petaling Jaya.

“I had already waited in line for five hours two days ago to get the tickets and I did not want to wait more than three hours to see the movie. I don't understand why they advertised opening times for the movie if they cannot start on time,” he said.

Moviegoers demanded refunds or compensation of about RM200 for each ticket they had bought at RM12.

At the Coliseum Cinema here, manager Sofie Baba said tickets counters were opened after 4pm, although people had started queuing from as early as noon. Those waiting turned violent when tickets to the 800-seat theatre were sold out within an hour.

When asked about allegations that the majority of the tickets had been sold to scalpers, he said an individual could buy a maximum of six tickets only, and that the management was not aware of any such activity.

S. Vel Paari, CEO of the movie's distributor Pyramid Saimira Theatre Chain, apologised for the delay and cancellation of the movie in some theatres.

“Rain and delay in getting the digital password from India for security reasons to beat piracy were the primary reasons for the delay and cancellations. Because of the rain, our delivery was affected and as a result, there was a delay in the screening of the movie,” he said.

He added that the Chennai-based movie producer, AVM, had supplied only 42 prints instead of the scheduled 53.

“The remaining 11 prints of the movie had to be downloaded through the Internet,” he said.

DPM says Satu Rumah Satu Profesional – learn from Indians

Indian parents traditionally want the children to be doctor, lawyer, or engineer. In other words a job that is associated with respect, education, social upliftment, and better future. Of course, nowadays there are more professions to choose from, such as management, accounting, computing, pure and applied sciences, etc.

Rather than aiming for "one family, one graduate" scheme, Indians parties/associations/NGOs/concerned citizens should consider more detailed targets – a family should have:

– disposable income enough for the whole family (assume 2 parents and 3 children)
– all graduates of minimum Bachelor degree from reputable universities
– involved in at least one profit making business – family based, partnership, francshise etc.
– own a house
– savings amounting to 12 months of income.
– investment in shares/unit trusts and property
– properly insured family members
– no obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels due to excessive food and sedimentary lifestyle
– promote and develop a skill/art for each family member (music/painting/sports etc)

What else we can add?

Can this be a target by 2057, since our PM also starting to think about that date?

Seorang profesional setiap rumah

source

Oleh Zabry Mohamad

SERDANG 14 Jun – Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak berkata, kerajaan ingin melihat keluarga Melayu di luar bandar dapat melahirkan seorang doktor atau peguam melalui kempen ‘Satu Rumah Satu Profesional’.

Menurut Timbalan Perdana Menteri, orang Melayu perlu mencontohi masyarakat India apabila setiap ibu bapa mahu anak-anak mereka menjadikan kerjaya kedoktoran sebagai pilihan pertama diikuti peguam.
