IJOK: The development undertaken here is not new, having being planned under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
The tenders for the projects were given out some time back and were not new as claimed by the opposition, he said.
Speaking to newsmen after visiting several Indian and Chinese villages here yesterday, Samy Vellu said that if no development was carried out, the opposition would then claim that the Barisan Nasional government had not done anything.
He said that all the people, including those from the opposition, would benefit from the development projects carried out here.
“The resurfacing of the road until the Batang Berjuntai town is a federal project and is being implemented now. If it is not done, then there would be many potholes,” he said.
Samy Vellu said that if Parti Keadilan Rakyat was not impressed with the development, then it should use alternative roads.
To a question, he said Barisan was the only coalition which could take care of the Ijok people’s interests.
Samy Vellu said the people’s response to Barisan’s campaign had been positive, adding that the indications were good.
“I’ve already visited the Malay, Chinese and Indian areas and the people all pledged to support Barisan,” he said.
To allegations that government machinery was being used for campaigning, he said it was not true.

Samy fires back.

“In Batang Berjuntai, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the practice of pouring development projects in a by-election was not new as it was well practised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was deputy prime minister.
“He is a good teacher and I learnt well from him,” he said in reference to claims that projects to upgrade roads in the Ijok constituency were only coming into the area due to the by-election.”
Samy fires salvo: Anwar gets a dose of his own medicine.
BN will win as machinery working well, says Najib

KUANTAN: It is going to be a tough by-election with aggressive opposition campaigning but the Barisan Nasional is prepared to face the challenge in Ijok.
BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the coalition machinery had gone through similar election battles and knew how to handle them.
“We have experienced this before. Our people are tough but at the same time we respect the law,” he said when asked to comment on the tense situation in Ijok on nomination day on Thursday.
Speaking after launching the Malaysian Unit Trust Week 2007 here yesterday, Najib said he was satisfied with the preparations made by the BN machinery and urged party workers to continue their excellent work.
“I was there until midnight (Thursday) and could see that our machinery is working well.” The April 28 by-election for the Ijok seat will see a straight fight between BN’s K. Parthiban and PKR treasurer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
In Batang Berjuntai, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the practice of pouring development projects in a by-election was not new as it was well practised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was deputy prime minister.
“He is a good teacher and I learnt well from him,” he said in reference to claims that projects to upgrade roads in the Ijok constituency were only coming into the area due to the by-election.
Anwar is now PKR advisor and has been campaigning intensively in Ijok.
Samy Vellu explained that all the projects were approved at least six months ago and were part of the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
On complaints that Parthiban had not been seen campaigning in Indian and Chinese areas, he said the BN candidate was busy covering the Malay areas.
“Once he is done with the ground work in the Malay areas, he will move on to the Indian and Chinese areas.”

Pace of life quickens in Ijok

Sri Hartini: Notes that locals in Ijok are feeling an air of importance. IJOK: The leisurely pace of life here has suddenly quicken with both an air of urgency and merriment as the campaigning for the by-election becomes more intense.
Strangers by the busloads have arrived and the banners and flags of the Barisan Nasional and Parti Keadilan Rakyat decorate the constituency.
Long-time resident Wee Ah Lee, 60, who helps her son operate a seafood restaurant in the heart of town, said that many strangers had been coming to eat at their restaurant.
“You can tell they are not locals. They dress differently and there is an air of importance about them. Their handphones are always ringing, they come in nice cars and their dressing is very modern,” said Wee.
“It is the by-election. It has turned our town merrier, more people, more activities and better still, more business for my shop,” she added.
Although illiterate, the mother of five said she had voted in all the elections.
“I do not know big, national issues. But I know the Government must make sure the roads are all right, there are enough schools for our children and more importantly, help us out when we have difficulties.”
Outside Wee’s shop, housewife Sri Hartini Jonoh, 51, fetched her son Mohd Shazrin Zaini from school on a motorcycle.
She also notes how locals here are feeling an air of importance as the whole nation watches the outcome of this by-election, which is expected to be a hard-fought one.
Asked which candidate would most likely win, Sri Hartini said it was a tough call.
“Even within my own family, there are divided views. I’ll vote for the party, not candidate, because I am choosing a party with a good track record of service.
“My siblings do not agree. Some think it’s the candidate that is more important because the candidate is the first person we go to for help.
“However, all of us agree that we cannot accept corruption, bad public service or arrogant leaders. The elected leaders must remember that they are there to serve us,” said Sri Hartini.
Long-time voter: According to Wee, the by-election has turned Ijok merrier with more people and activities going on. Selangor MCA secretary Datuk Ch’ng Toh Eng said that just like customers, Ijok voters were kings at the moment.
He said Barisan leaders and supporters who went canvassing were bombarded with requests for help and some were even criticised.

A 100-member welfare brigade has been set up by the Subang MIC division to identify the problems faced by the Indian community in the Subang parliamentary constituency.
Division chairman N.R. Krishnan said the members would also be required to attend to the needs of the community, especially in the event of a natural disaster.
“If there is a fire, the members must be at the scene to console the victims and ensure that their needs are met,” he told The Star.
He said the members had also been directed to identify those who had not registered as voters and register them as the general elections are near.
Help team: Palanivel shaking hands with members of the newly set up welfare brigade members in Subang MIC division. Behind him is Nijhar. Earlier, MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel had launched the brigade as well as the new uniform for the members.
Palanivel, who is also the Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the members should listen to the problems faced by the Indian community and try to resolve them.
He said members would then know what was happening on the ground and ensure the party was able to deliver the needs of the community.
Subang MP Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar, who sponsored the uniform, said the members must also compile a list of the voters in their area and identify new voters.
He said the division was the first in the party to have set up a welfare brigade.
